I am hesitant to give JT more positive feedback, as don't want him to get inundated with requests to the point he can no longer help me =)

Having said that, top notch collector and person to work with! So happy with my trees, they are good sized and handling the bright April sun light champs. You rock JT!

The thinning has begun



My plan on thinning is to remove fruit that are forming on large clusters on the same branch since these will likely bump into each other. I’m going to leave some branches with large clusters and thin some branches heavily to see what the difference is.

Has anyone tried rooting cuttings or marcotting? Wonder how vigorous it would be on its own roots.

I grafted four scions of Prague on different rootstocks in my greenhouse in Feb 2023 and all four failed to bud out all year despite staying green. I cut one off thinking it had failed, but the other three are still just sitting there now, green but refusing to bud out. I've never seen anything like it, but I assume it's related to the lack of vigor, or incompatibility with rootstocks (3 were different kinds of mandarins, one was a lemon seedling).

I noticed today that one of the three is showing very slight bud development, so I'm holding out hope. That's the one that's grafted to the central leader of a grafted Pixie mandarin (in the ground in my greenhouse).

I had quite a bit of difficulty identifying this species which was declared to me as Takini by certain people of Palikur origin. As I had certain doubts, it was ultimately the Cayenne herbarium which confirmed Helicostylis pedunculata for me by examining my samples. On the other hand, they did not know the vernacular name. There are 6 indigenous nations here, and 6 different languages, which makes things complicated.
I therefore think that the probability is high that the botanical identification is correct but indeed, given this article, the Takini appellation needs to be verified more thoroughly.
