Top[ grafted Mango
« on: October 30, 2015, 12:50:23 PM »
Hi you all, I have a question for the group. I have a mango tree that was stringy. I had a top grafting of Florigon. I want to graft another type with similar growth structure. Any reccomendations?  I don't care for fiberous mangos. Thanks

Fairchild, Pickering and Mahachanok (Carrie would work but I don't have the heart to recommend it) are a few that fall into that category and will give you similar growth habit.  There a many others but you want to try and match growth habits.

You are not a fan of Carrie I guess? Is it the flavor?

Not a fan of the taste or texture.   It is a mango that people seem to love or hate, and there are a number of people on both sides.  I will say, dont let my likes and dislikes alter your perceptions.  If you know you like it,  thats all that matters.   If you dont know what its like,  I would recommend trying a number of other varieties before making a decision.

I love the Carrie mango and would suggest it highly. But, if you have never tasted it, you should give it a try first. It's very sweet, creamy and has an ultra smooth texture. The flesh is very soft, almost like pudding. Hence, it will bruise easily. But the flavor is phenomenal!!! (IMO)...

If it were me, I'd go with mahachanok.

Ummm, why not graft all of the above.  I have a Cogshal that did not hold fruit well, now it has four others top grafted to it.  High expectations for next year.

I love the taste of mangos suggested:  Maha, Pickering, Carrie, etc.  However, these are relatively slow growers in my yard compared to Florigon.  In other words, the Florigon will out grow the other variety in a cocktail tree.  If you can find the scions, you might try Sunrise or Sweet Tart.

Wow, our friend in St Pete harvest over 50 clean mangos. Could this only be the case in Miami?

That could be a contributing reason for its cleanliness.  The proximity to the ocean/microclimate and salt air could be the conditions it needs.

Truly Tropical seems to be pretty close to the ocean, and I recall Har saying it is a serious battle each year, just to get a few fruit to eat.
