Containerman- as it happens, I had been off-forum for a bit, but first thing I did today on return was to read your thread there, and I even responded much to your point.  We should chat sometime.  Let me know if you're ever up this way.  I'm in the East Roseville foothills.

I have a 4 year old Wurtz that is 7 feet and they are ready to pick between June- Sept. They drop allot of fruit and my tree last season gave me 3 dozen fruit that it hung onto. This year looks like it will be more but only time will tell and m,y tree is in a container.

Your yard and tree's are looking great Containerman! I'm sure the wood helps keep the root temperatures happier than in plastic pots and looks better too. I am in the process of planting out Pixie, Page, Fukushu, Eustis and Smith Red Citrus that I have had in pots for 6 years. They are in 25, 45, and 65 gallon pots. Not that fun wrangling them into the ground but they are rootbound and drying out daily right now during flower and fruit set. I know they will be much happier and fruit tenfold soon come now.

You guys have a great avocado nursery in your area I would love to see sometime and maybe pick up a tree that I don't have like a sharwill or another type you don't find at most nurseries.

I have all my citrus in 1/2 wine barrels and 6 avocado trees in 1/2 barrel and larger containers and all my trees are fruiting. So it depends on allot of factors, soil mixture, watering, ferts, drainage, climate conditions, etc.......

I've been told to never mulch a fruit tree in a container but I mulch all mine including my 12 blueberries in 1/2 wine barrels. All my trees went from the nursery into the 1/2 wine barrels. I have 14 citrus in containers all real healthy and I never had any problems. It has worked well for me and I have heard lots of horror stories as well.

Here are a few pics of my avocados a mexicola and wurtz.

my GN gave me about 50 fruit this year and I grow mine in a 1/2 wine barrel long with all 14 of my citrus trees. We ate all of them by late March. Mine were easy to peal and also juicy not dry so I'm not sure if my area and growing conditions near Modesto make any difference in the results. I'm very happy with my G.N. I also have all 3 of the other golds. The Yosemite, Shasta and Tahoe. I will have fruit this next season on my Yosemite and Shasta. The Tahoe has produced for a few years now and they are really good but I like the G.N. better. I have kishu, Okitsu Wase Satsuma and Honey as well.

Take a look here it was the clear taste test winner

http://www.fruitmentor.com/okitsu-wase-satsuma

In a November 2014 citrus taste test of 60 varieties from California's central valley, the Okitsu Wase Satsuma was the overall winner. Tasters reported Okitsu Wase to be sweet with excellent flavor and very juicy. One taster also noted its fragrant skin. On a scale from 1 to 9, Okitsu Wase scored 7.3, a bit higher than “very good” (7).

I have the following trees in bloom all in containers.

Dwarf Washington Navel
Cara Cara
Moro Blood
Oroblanco
Kishu
Okitsu Wase Satsuma
Honey Mandarin
Tahoe Gold
Yosemite Gold
Shasta Gold
Gold Nugget
Variegated Pink Eureka Lemon
Meyer Lemon

The smell in the backyard is amazing this year. I have doubled my citrus trees since last season and now I'm content with my citrus collection.

the concept is keeping the middle of the tree open like you would a single tree and 18 inches apart are enough room for 2-4 trees planted close together and keeping them smaller in size through pruning. Also it gives you more varieties spread out over longer period of time. Take a look here and you can also see it on youtbe

Another option is to buy 3-4 trees of your liking say a nectarine, peach, plum, pluot and plant them together spacing them 18 inches apart and have them spread out from June - Aug-Sept. Its called backyard orchard culture look it up on youtube with Dave Wilson Nursery. These will be much better than the 3 or 4 in one trees.

I'm in the Modesto area and the little cado takes temps to 25* and the holiday to 30*. My little cado is doing great and my holiday tree died last year. I have 8 different varieties growing in my yard and none of them get protection and are all doing great. I'm in zone 9b.  near Modesto which should be similar weather to yuba city. I use to fish the feather river every year for salmon but haven't done that lately.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Cara Cara vs Tarocco ?
« on: March 21, 2018, 01:25:04 PM »
If I can find the room maybe I will consider adding a tarocco to the collection. Right now I have 3 orange trees and 5 mandarins all different varieties.

I drink coffee and we also drink tea so I always saved the grounds and the go into my raised beds. I also take my fruit tree and citrus tree cuttings and put them into them as well. I might start using banana peels and cut them into really small pieces and place them into my raised beds and container plants. I try and use mulch from my trees as a top layer as well.

I seldom buy citrus at the stores so I'm basing it on taste and for me I really prefer a sweet orange.

My local nursery had a citrus tasting last weekend and I had never tasted the moro before and it was a delight to my taste-buds so I just had to buy one :)
I haven't tasted a cara cara but from everything I've read and heard its a great orange and rates right at the top of the list for most people.

I have room for one more orange tree. Right now I have a Washington navel and a moro blood orange. If you had to pick between a cara cara and a tarocco which one would you choose and why, thanks !

Citrus General Discussion / Re: When to Pick Moro Blood Orange?
« on: March 04, 2018, 11:00:05 AM »
I was at a citrus tasting yesterday at my local nursery and tried a moro orange for the first time. It was sweet, berrylike flavor and just a little acidic. It was the best tasting orange I've ever eaten so I bought a tree and I wasn't even looking to purchase one lol. So now I have 2 orange trees and 5 mandarins.

My top 2 favorites that I'm growing are the Okistu Wase Satsuma and the Gold Nugget. The others I'm growing are really good the Yosemite Gold, Tahoe Gold and Kishu but the Okistu and G.N. are really tasty mandarins.
