« on: February 28, 2023, 01:41:08 PM »
Hello everyone,

I would like to grow prunus mume (Japanese apricot) so that I can pickle my own umeboshi. I'm struggling to find seeds or plants for sale online. I'm located in West Virginia, USA, but am happy to have something shipped. Does anyone know of reliable sellers or someone who might have seeds?

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Should I top my Ice Cream Bean?
« on: August 25, 2022, 07:16:13 PM »
Hey everyone! Proud owner of a 6 foot Ice Cream Bean tree which I bring in during winter. My issue is that it is only growing a few leaves and growing directly upwards, and getting too tall for my grow lights. If I top it, will it branch out more or just stop growing? Suggestions?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Advice for Starfruit
« on: August 25, 2022, 07:09:13 PM »
Hey everyone! I've tried to grow Starfruit from seed four times now with no luck. The seeds always sprout fine and grow fine for several weeks, and then for some reason or other they all die. They just seem to be incredibly sensitive to both too much and too little water, and die very quickly if the conditions aren't right. I've had more success growing cacao indoors than Starfruit. Does anyone have any suggestions? How do I keep these guys happy? Do they get less sensitive with age?

Possibly traveling to Florida this January, haven't decided yet. What fruit varieties are in season in Florida (anywhere in Florida) in January? Particularly interested in rare varieties, but any information you have is helpful!

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / ISO Mangosteen Seeds and Chilean Guava
« on: October 07, 2021, 07:45:12 AM »
Anyone have mangosteen seeds right now? Any variety, special preference to ones that could potentially be grown well in a pot- I know that's tough for Mangosteen.

Right now I have Seashore and Lemondrop Mangosteen seedlings, hoping to test a few more.

I am also looking for Chilean Guava, seeds or plants. One Green World sells them but charges a ridiculous fee for shipping.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Looking for grow lights that last
« on: September 08, 2021, 03:57:44 PM »
Hey everyone!

I grow my plants indoors over winter and have a special dedicated room for them. I've been doing this for about three years. I've been getting my grow lights off Amazon. I have Viparspectra, King LED, and Bloomspect. Unfortunately, it seems like these only last a year or so each before they break. My two King LEDs both stopped working this past spring after 1 and 2 years running.

What are some brands that will last me 5+ years? I hate to keep buying new lights every few years, it feels really wasteful.

Hello!

I live in WV and I have a few weeks of warm weather coming up. I'm hoping to buy Pitangatuba and Starfruit, preferably plants but will also consider seeds. Shipping from within the U.S. only. Does anyone know where I could find these this time of year?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Finding tropical fruit nurseries...
« on: January 05, 2021, 10:25:47 AM »
Hey everyone!

I lIve in the WV panhandle. My birthday is coming up and I was considering driving South and checking out some tropical plant nurseries, since I can never find much in the way of tropical plants in my area. I'm just wondering how far South I need to go. NC, SC, FL? Which nurseries even open during winter and COVID?

I'm open to suggestions for where to visit. I intend to drive so I can bring plants home with me, and from what I'm looking out I'll need to drive 15+ hours.

Citrus Buy, Sell, & Trade / ISO finger lime seeds
« on: December 06, 2020, 01:45:39 PM »
Hey everyone! I'm getting pretty good at starting citrus from seed and am hoping to find finger lime seeds. I recently got a few finger limes from Miamifruit but they didn't have any seeds, and I was pretty disappointed. Would consider also buying fruits.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Starfruit flavor
« on: September 24, 2020, 08:14:12 PM »
Hey everyone! Newbie to the tropical fruit world. I've only ever tried Starfruit once, from my local WV grocery store. I wasn't a fan, I didn't think the flavor was all that good and it was very seedy. How much better are Starfruit when you get them fresh and local vs grocery store in a non-tropical area? Is there a large diversity in flavor between the varieties?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / USPS shipping advice
« on: September 17, 2020, 10:46:22 AM »
Hello, I recently ordered some seeds. The seller shipped them out immediately. The seeds were coming from Hawaii. Usually when I order from Hawaii the USPS moved them around the islands for a few days, flies them to Harrisburg, PA, a few towns over from me, and then the next day they take them to my towns Post Office, and then the next day hey deliver them. Following the tracking number, USPS scanned the package into Harrisburg on the 12th. Since then, it's been sitting at Harrisburg for five days. It was supposed to be delivered on the 14th and still has not left Harrisburg. I've had other packages go through Harrisburg since then and have been delivered.

Is this something I should try calling the Post Office about? Getting a little concerned as to whether they'll ever push them onward.

Hello everyone,

I was wondering what everyone's input is on what substrate to use when germinating seeds. Last year, I tried most of my seeds in coco coir or soil and has a lot of the longer germinating seeds rot in the soil. This year, I've started using damp paper towel. I prefer this method because I can see what the seeds are doing more easily. I have had a lot of luck, but have to change the paper towel regularly to prevent mold. I've seen a lot of people in this forum use vermiculite for seed starting, and was wondering how it compares. I'm not sure I would want to use it because you couldn't see if the seeds had germinated or not. What's everyone's input?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cacao identification
« on: September 08, 2020, 02:25:16 PM »
Hello everyone,

I posted pictures of the Trinitario and Forastero fruits I got from Montoso Gardens to a fruit growing page on Facebook. Someone on the page commented saying that Trinitario and Forastero are not considered to be proper designations for cacao varieties anymore and said I would need to have the fruits genetically tested to find out the *actual* variety, but that the fruits looked like they could be "Amelonado".
However, when I do a search for cacao identification, I only find information pertaining to Criollo, Nacional, Trinitario, and Forastero, which is all I've ever heard of. Does anyone know what's up with these new fancy designations?

I have a plant room with multiple high output LED grow lights for my tropicals and peppers over winter. I run the 1000 and 1500 watt LED grow lights 12 hours a day over winter. The humidity is kept between 50-75% (usually the higher end) and I keep it around 70 degrees.

I just bought two coffee plants and am wondering if they'll fruit indoors under grow lights accompanied by the appropriate temperature levels. Has anyone has coffee fruit indoors or under grow lights?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Assistance identifying papaya variety
« on: September 05, 2020, 04:57:56 PM »

Hey everyone,

Got this papaya at Martin's grocery in WV. My first papaya. The flavor is slightly sweet, maybe a 3/10, and faintly musky. No prevailing flavors besides that. Any ideas what variety it could be? Also, do they taste better when grown at home vs bought at grocery store?
