New to Artocarpus
« on: March 10, 2020, 02:43:20 AM »
Hi all,
I figured this would be the place to get a question answered about a few Artocarpus species.  I have a really good grafted Jackfruit and a good Marang seedling, and a really prolific Cempedak.  I was wondering if anyone has ever tried top working these- as in adding a Cempedak or Marang branch onto a Jackfruit tree?  I know it sounds strange but years ago I had a "Frankenfruit" tree that had lemons, limes, and tangello on one tree.  I was thinking about trying to do the same with some Artocarpus.  Thoughts?
Thanks in Advance,
Fred

Jack and chempa are compatible but neither are compatible with marang or any other Artocarpus.

I know that marang and breadfruit can be grafted onto each other (marang root, breadfruit top to be specific about what I have seen).

Maybe you could have intermediary graft wood, something like this:
jackfruit root -> kwai muk or lakoocha or moneky jack etc -> marang.

I am pondering about cross pollination possibilities of artocarpus so this was my reasoning with one plant that would not be fertilized by pollen directly. Have a plant in between and then use that zygotic ofsprings pollen. This methodology could work for grafts :D.

Wild jackfruit (hirsutus) can be used as rootstock for Jackfruit.

Marang is almost compatible with jack but the compatibility of those big leafed ones like pedalai, sparrow jack, hirsutis etc probably hasnt been tested. Best off using the same species if you are more focussed on success than learning about combability and delayed compatibility.

Yes, I personally know Marang patch bud grafted on A. hirsutus.
