first grapefruit crop

My Flame grapefruit is producing its first crop this year, and it is huge.   There are so many grapefruits the bottom half of the tree is like a fruit igloo from all the branches being pulled down to the ground.  The outsides have a bit of color but still mostly green.  I cut one open last week and it looks like nearly full color inside.   Definitely edible but needs more time.  I know these are supposed to ripen in mid to late winter, but I think mine of off schedule.  They aren't ripe yet but they seem fairly close.  Hard to imagine they need another 4-5months.  I'm going to pick one every week or two until they seem right.

An amazing amount of production, for a first fruiting.  You must have done an excellent job caring for the tree.

Wonderful! About ripening for grapefruit, I’m still eating grapefruit off two trees that bloomed in spring of 2019. I’m glade grapefruit last on the tree a long time. Mine are never fully ripe until well into January. Mine are Croxton and Rio Star.

I leave my grapefruit hanging on the tree until March, developing all the heat unites the fruit can.

Beautuful crop! How did your grapefruits taste?  Do you get enough heat units to sweeten them up?

It was excellent!  As good or better than any grocery store red grapefruit I've had.  Heat is definitely not an issue for me as the greenhouse gets hot any sunny day, even in winter

So what month was the fruit the best tasting for you ?

I grafted many Flame grapefruits last year so hope to taste one fruit next year. Can you post a photo of one cut open.

I think mine were off season.  They were falling off the tree by themselves in late Jan early Feb with what I assume is full color and flavor.  I gave the last of them away 2nd week of February because I was afraid they would rot before I could eat them all.

Unfortunately my phone that had good cut fruit photos was broken so I don't have that, but they looked just like this stock photo, maybe a bit darker



you can see the rind colored up nicely, this is the actual fruit from when we picked the last of them in February.
