Citrus General Discussion / How do they do that?!
« on: October 18, 2015, 01:42:57 PM »
While searching online for different mandarin and orange trees to try, I saw quite a few pictures of citrus trees from China trimmed like vertical cylinders and totally covered in fruit.

While I find these trees unattractive, trees trimmed like that would definitely let me squeeze more plants into tight places.  How in the world do they do that?  Is it just special pruning practices, a prolific inedible fruit, treating with certain plant hormones or what?

Citrus General Discussion / Owari bark issue
« on: October 15, 2015, 12:01:56 PM »

Kind of hard to see, but my Owari Satsuma has a small spot at the base of a limb about the size of a dime where the bark has peeled back in all directions.  Should I prune off this limb?  Or treat it with something?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / MYSTERIOUS BLACK SPOTS on Glenn Mango
« on: October 15, 2015, 11:57:18 AM »

Groups of black spots on my Glenn mango.  Mostly on leaf petioles and some on the trunk.  They don't look raised, like bug eggs and they can be scraped off with a fingernail.

Any ideas?

Citrus General Discussion / Citrus hardiness - Satsumas
« on: October 14, 2015, 11:17:05 PM »
Hey Guys,
Just ordered a few trees and need help figuring out which are more hardy or more tender.  I have a few spots in the yard where I can plant.  Some spots are more protected than others, so I'd like to put the more sensitive ones there.  I'm in 8B, Charleston, South Carolina.

New trees:
Ponkan
Owari
Golden Nugget
Xie Shan
Shiranui (Dekopon)
King

Also, I read somewhere that for some varieties, a tree is cold-hardy, but the fruit is not.  Will this be a problem with these varieties?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Need recs on Pineapples
« on: September 05, 2015, 10:19:26 PM »
I recently picked up 5 each of Elite Gold, White Jade, Florida Special, Sugarloaf, and Smooth Cayenne.  Not sure what to add next...  Maybe Pernambuco, Spanish Red, Queen or something else?  What do you think?

And where to get them?  I can't seem to find a good source for uncommon pineapples.

Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What's wrong with my bananas?
« on: August 22, 2015, 05:50:07 PM »
I've noticed black spots on some of my banana plants, mostly Dwarf Namwah.  They are around the top of the pseudostem.  Is this something to worry about or is it normal?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Avocado tree with black spots. Help!
« on: August 18, 2015, 11:28:02 PM »
I picked up a couple of 3 gallon avocado trees in South Florida a few weeks ago.  The leaf coloring was very light and one tree had what I thought was a sun burn spot on the trunk.  Now the spot has darkened more and now also has small white spots that look like spores.  Not sure what it is or how to treat it.  Should I cut off the affected areas and spray with Copper?  Then paint with 50/50 water and white latex?
