The peach actually started its blooms...I just want to make sure I wasn't going to waste time and energy on a plant that may decline overall or not put out adequate growth...The plum may still get yanked because its about 80% girdled...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Yellowing to Citrus leaf
« on: January 07, 2013, 03:22:03 PM »
Over at another members house to check out his plants and he noted a yellowing happening on his citrus...if I can recall correctly a "navel' orange....anyone have any ideas...He puts 8-3-9 Excalibur fertilizer down but no chelated iron treatments yet...

728
Should I let these plants try to recover or should I yank them? Will they ever produce normally?  The first is my Tropic Beauty Peach followed by Scarlet Beauty Plum and the last is Nuathong Atemoya.... This happened about 8 months ago when the grass got tall and I didnt see how close I was trimming. Now I have the bark protectors on my trees....hindsight...

Jackfruit is planted pretty close to that house isn't it?

730
Sorry, its dark out..I'll take a better pic tomorrow..the flash kept messing with the pic..They definitely appear grafted...

731
Mike,
Can you take an up close pic of the graft unions for the Red Morning and the Cristela? Thanks!

They are all large enough to plant out right now.

They are in the ground!

pics of grafts...first is Cristella and the second is Red Morning aka Dang Surian

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is this Jackfruit large enough to plant out?
« on: January 05, 2013, 02:23:15 PM »
I purchased three jackfruit the other day at Excalibur, incuding Bangkok Lemon, Red Morning, and Cristella. The Cristella on the right seems large enough to plant out...but what about the other two? bangkok Lemon is in middle and Red Morning on left. They are grafted not seedlings.

also note the flower buds on the bangkok lemon....I'm gonna let it fruit.....maybe next year

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Nishikawa Avocado - Aloha & Mahalo
« on: January 04, 2013, 08:34:26 PM »
Ate my first Nishikawa today. Very rich and creamy. I only have room for one avocado and this will probably be it. The flavor is very rich and will make a great 'meaty' type of fruit. Just a little salt and lime was all I added...

I'll take 10

Rob, whats on the fruit tables these days at Excalibur? I feel like making a trip out there...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Underwater Avocado
« on: December 18, 2012, 07:48:58 AM »
I was donated a seedling avocado tree that had been dug up twice by neighbor and moved around his yard. When I got home one day I found the avocado seedling in a 5 gallon bucket of water on my front porch step like an orphan in need of a home. Problem was I had enough seedlings and wasn't doing much with the ones I had. But I took it anyway and threw it on the side of my house waiting for it to drown slowly in the next week or so in the bucket of water. But as you can see by the pics not only is it not dead after six months but it has put out new root growth and its starting to push out some buds at the top. There is a mas of algae that has developed around the roots which is probably supplying the tree with oxygen at the roots...This tree seems very useful as a root stock...Any ideas on what will happen? Its been in that bucket for at least six months and all I've done is add a few mosquito fish recently to control the mosquito larvae population...just wanted to share the bizarre....

Nice yard bro, and to think a year ago you didn't have any. After many taste tests at the fire station Cody realized there was a whole new world in fruits.....Don't forgot to post the pic of that flowering Coconut Cream behind the station (some of the guys planted one there)...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Favorite Mangos
« on: June 16, 2012, 08:06:42 PM »
The Broward Rare Fruit & Vegetable Council has a 3 acre property, which grows various rare fruit trees.  They were very kind and provided us a tour of their property.  One of our hosts, Eric, was the gardener/grounds keeper for William Whitman's house, while Mr. Whitman was alive.  Eric was our primary guide, pointing out the various trees as we toured the property.  He seemed very knowledgeable.  Eric said he has tasted 300+ varieties of mangos.  During the tour, he pointed out his favorite mangos, which included Mahachanok, Neelam, and Alampur Baneshar.  Eric was a pretty cool guy as were our other hosts & hostesses.  Thought I would share the mango varieties with the group.  With permission, I collected budwood of the Neelam and Alampur Baneshar.  I already have a Mahachanok, so I didn't get any maha budwood.  I noticed Pine Island rated the Alampur Baneshare rather lowhttp://www.tropicalfruitnursery.com/mango/alampur-baneshan-mango.shtml  Any idea why?  Did they pick it when it wasn't ripe?
Are you sure you read that right? It has one of the higher ratings. Quote "Alampur Baneshan is considered one of the finest dessert mangos of Northern India."

Made my way out to Excalibur today to pick up some mangoes for a couple recipes. They are starting to get a very good selection going. I picked up 18lbs of mangoes including: Baileys Marvel, Beverly, Bombay, Brahm Kai Meu, Carrie, Cushman, Dot, PPK, NDM, Siatong, Fairchild, Southern Blush, PSM, Southern Pride, and one labeled BAT. I met one of the forum members, (Rob) and waited for him to show me around as they had a lot of customers today. While I was waiting they were cutting up a fresh Jackfruit 'Bangkok Lemon'.  It was my first time trying  jackfruit and must say I will be getting one of these for my yard. I bought a 1lb of jackfruit and me and my girls quickly devoured half of it (I saved some for the wifey). We also had our fill of mangoes and lychees. Mrs. Lynda also let my girls play with their Golden Retriever puppies (which they breed). My girls quickly named each one and had their favorites.
Rob then took us out to check out some of the larger annonas and mamey sapotes in some BIG pots (or maybe they are small swimming pools at that point). He found a nice ripe 'Viejo' mamey sapote and cut into it to reveal an awesome burnt orange flesh. I have not had a mamey sapote in years but I don't remember it tasting this good. I bet it makes a great pie. I attached some pics of our day and the bountiful harvest of fruits they have.

I've never seen them on mine...just the occasional mealybug. I usually just wipe them off the fruit with a stiff paintbrush.

Excalibur currently has a good selection of mangoes...Haden, Cogshall, PPK/Lemon Meringue, Glenn, Florigon, Carrie, along with a small amount of PSM, Quidnau and Dupius Saigon....more varieties will become available as the days roll on.
Thanks for the tip...lots of mangos today! Picked up some Lemon Meringue and a couple others....

Rob, any idea of the cultivar of these bananas...Best I've ever had. Would def pop a couple of these in the ground...

I would like to propagate my 'Tropic Beauty' peach and was wondering if I could use any old peach seed. My in-laws just came back from there cabin in North Georgia and loaded me up with peaches. Or is another certain type of rootstock in order for us Floridians?

Harry + Carrie = Charrie. If you want it to really sell name it Cherry. If you were like Zill you would name it Cherry Pie, Cherry Cream, Cherry Cake, Cherry Cobbler, or Cherry Merengue. I think the name Harrie Carrie would be really suicidal. Pun intended!  ;)
BTW, i see the Guatemalan imported rambutan craze has hit your doorstep also!
How bout Cheri...like the liquor
