A couple of questions about cherimoya scions pushing
« on: May 24, 2019, 05:13:45 AM »
Hi guys,

I have all my scions of cherimoya pushing, they were grafted 16 days ago. I kept the plants indoors, no direct sun, in a steady range of temperature of 70-77ºF, watering carefully to avoid sap to push scion away from rootstock. At the same time I eliminated any new flush from rootstock following tips from Behl in an old post. So far so good, but last year I was in a similar situation and eventually lost many of them in the following weeks. So here some questions about what I must do now.

-Should I take the plants outdoors already and let them receive some direct sun at the last hours of the day? Or direct sun the whole day or keep them indoors for some weeks more? The forecasted range of min and max temperatures for the next 2 weeks in my location is 60-80ºF, sunny.

- Should I remove the flowers from the new flushes of the scions?

- When can I start to water in a normal rate?

Here some pics:

They need some sun.  Try partial shade then in a week or so more sun.

To be honest I put mine out in full sun right away if its 60-80f out but since you had them inside you might want to work them back in sun slowly.

This one is avocado but its the same as cherimoya for me.  In mild weather, fresh grafts can be in full sun.

I left mine out in full Sun, got 50% take, I also leave all my A.Reticulatas in full Sun and I get 98% take on its own root stock.

Cherimoya grows best at 1/2 light intensity of full sun.

Thank you all for the answers. Mine are already receiving a couple of hours of full sun at the last hours and I will move them progressively to their original location through the next 2 weeks.

What about flowers? Do you remove them from scions or just let them develop and fall?

I always remove the flowers. You don't want energy going to fruit production now.
I grafted about 30 atemoyas this Spring and it is common for the scion to push
initially I guess from residual energy in the scion. Good Luck!

Yes, I noticed that the last year, pushing at the beginning in every scion and eventually just a few takes. This year I have a couple of them like that, they pushed immediately but now stopped. Let's see the rest. I'll remove the flowers, thanks for the tip, Mike!

Some of mine pushed and dried.
I put plastic sleeves over to keep scions humid.
I put paper cone around scions to protect from full sun.
3 months later new buds pushing.
