psidium cattleianum damaged by frost
« on: September 28, 2012, 11:51:28 AM »
Hello

I have a little question: I gave a friend an Araza (psidium cattleianum, strawberry guava) some days ago, it's 1m tall and has just a few new sprouts and no more folliage...

he lives in the outskirts, so the frosts are lower there... it seems that yesterday had a frost of -2º C, and he said that the arazá was destroyed by the frost...

as I found in the Internet that arazá is cold hardy to -6º C without damage, i am wondering if his tree should survive

what do you think, will the tree sprout again? we are in the begining of the sping

Regards

I don't know about your plant. I have an anecdotal evidence of a psidium cattleianum wich survived, in a sheltered location in my city, to a single -8°C night.
By the way with minimal effort, i have seen some of them being grow further north than me.

Thanks, so, if it's 3 years old, it should survive, I think, regards

Cattleianum is pretty hardy. CRFG (California Rare Fruit Growers) gives the kill temperature as -5C(23F).
