100 year old Pantin Mamey
« on: May 11, 2014, 11:19:47 AM »
Just got back from the Keys. While in Key West I visited the historic Key West firehouse and saw their massive Pantin Mamey. The museum is holding a 100th birthday party for the tree on June 7, 2014. Their collecting fruit for mamey ice cream and mamey shakes. Very cool place, did the museum tour too. If you're ever in KW I suggest checking the place out.

Wow. That's cool. :) It's amazing how well it has been doing in key west alkaline coral limestone.

Very cool field report. Glad to see that this historic tree is alive and well. Let's get more Forum members to send in reports like this of important fruit trees....

I have a Pantin planted in my front yard, so it was kind of surreal to see the original.  See the story of the Key West / Pantin Mamey with photos by Noel aka FloridaGreenMan.

The station also has a young mango and avocado that the city planted in their yard too.

I'm not surprised at all. I travel to the keys a few times a year and sometimes just ride my bike around and look at all the marvelous old trees. Plenty of mangoes and avocados for sure.

The sapodillas at the Audubon House are massive and the fruit falls from the sky. I just pick them up and eat them on the spot. I think they taste great and they are often seedless. Random fruit trees all over the place.  If you have property in the Keys, I'd say plant it!

This brings much joy.  I must visit the tree on its anniversary in June.  Coincidently, that is my fathers birthday; one of the first commercial Mamey growers in the Redland area and we're still "growing" strong.

May he rest in peace.

Wow. Sorry to hear about your father. :( Whenever you have a chance, can you post some pics of your mamey grove? I'm a big mamey enthusiast.  :)
