Tropical Fruit Discussion / What Fruit is this? Never seen it before today
« on: February 24, 2013, 12:08:15 AM »
Found this growing in a ladies backyard in North Miami near the Oleta River. The lady says she eats them all the time and they are very tart but flavorfull. I tried a little of the juice and it's way to acidic for my taste. Any ideas? Naranjilla maybe a wild form?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Matts Giant Black Sapote
« on: February 21, 2013, 08:31:41 AM »
This tree was a chance seedling. The seed was from a large fruit that was purchased at a farmer's market maybe 15 years ago; but this tree inherited all of the large fruit genes as its fruit are much larger than the parent. Typically 1 1/2 -2 lbs with occasional fruit to around 2 1/2 lb. (40oz). (range 16-40 oz.) The trees is very productive and it makes fruit every year. It is self fertile.  The fruit quality is of very good, fairly typical of others though the fruit are often seedless, 0-3 , probably average 2 seeds/fruit, not many. Often able to make two Black Sapote Breads from each fruit. They make the best nut breads, the fruit is not overly wet. It has a nice dark brown-chocolate flesh color. The fruit stay light green when ripe; prettier than the black ones. Substitute black sapote for banana in any banana nut bread recipe.

Photo sent to me by Matt and used with his permission.
Not sure if it has been posted here before. I gave the last tree to my friend in Hollywood, Florida as a gift. Can't wait to eat the fruit in a few years.

Has anyone else had experience with this cultivar?

I would like to start growing a few trees. Today I picked up two six foot tall beauties. They are seed grown and the seed originated from the Dominican Republic. My understanding is that they have perfect flowers but require cross pollination. Someone please elucidate me?

Thanks.

I will post some pictures later.  :D

Hello folks,

I have heard that Wurtz really is a poor quality avocado. Does anyone know a little about it's origins? From what I hear it's not very tasty. Some say this  avocado is good in time of war. Makes a great weapon for a slingshot! ;D

Let me share with you some of my favorites and a bit of history:

Oro Negro is amazing black skinned with great texture and flavor. Good production.

Day is a little like a Hass but more pear shaped and olive drab skin. Good production and flavor.

Lula is to me a really nice avocado with a very sweet flavor. Anyone else detect that it is quite sweet?

Catalina is my absolutely favorite. What's not to like about it? "This amazing avocado floated across from Cuba, 60 years ago just before Fidel Castro took over the Island Nation. Wise Cubans jumped into the ocean to escape the Castro regime and tossed in some favorite scions for us to enjoy here in the States. We owe a great debt to poor old Don Miguel Cruz de la Santa Maria Espinoza Sanchez Alvarez Jr. who sadly was lost at sea. His amazing scion wood, wrapped in cellophane and aluminum foil floated over, washing a shore on Miami Beach. His shiny little package was miraculously picked up on the shoreline and immediately grafted and cared for by keen eyed avocado lovers in Miami." So be sure to think about this story every time you eat a Catalina! Well the story may be full of you know what, but the avocado is not! Catalina is the real deal and one hell of an awesome Avocado!

Monroe is another great avocado and related to Oro Negro. "Legend has it that Oro Negro was found in Homestead, Florida on a cool dark rainy night after a meteor crashed into an abandoned papaya plantation." It is from out of this world but not quite as tasty or nearly as huge as my Cuban favorite Catalina.

Can you smell the BS yet? Well okay just trying to have a little fun. After all I am a Cuban and we like to stir things up from time to time!

Russell is a real dandy looking long necked avocado that chefs in particular like for preparing fancy salads. You can get little round cuts from the neck and other shapes as well for presentation on a plate. "You can also start your car in an emergency by sticking the long end of the neck into the gas tank and squeezing really hard. Awesome biofuel"

What good is living if you can't raise hell and have some fun?

I am sure some of you know how. This year I have finally managed to root some nice ones and man was it a slow process. It is so great to finally see these babies growing lots of new leaves. Anyone else have some experience rooting them?
It's late now but I will post a picture tomorrow.

See ya!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Best Soursop I ever enjoyed! Video
« on: June 22, 2012, 11:09:11 PM »
A few days ago I had the pleasure of meeting a beautiful retired couple in Lakeworth.

They are truly nuts about Soursop and have several trees. All of the trees are seed grown. Some trees are just three years old and have produced delicious fruit. Well, I really got excited and posted a video of my encounter with an amazing delicious soursop shake. No added sugar really!

I don't know why but I sounded like I was stoned on the video. Trust me I was not!! I was tired like hell and sounded weird. Or maybe I always sound that way. Who knows? :o I think after drinking three large glasses of Soursop it really made me mellow out!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Anyone Using Compost Tea?
« on: May 01, 2012, 09:27:55 AM »
In the last two years, I have started to slowly make the transition from using synthetic Fertilizers/Pesticides etc towards organic methods.

Compost teas are very powerful when made correctly and used to help trees, lawns, vegetables grow. They also help maintain balance and control diseases.

Any comments pro or con?
