Does anyone have any fortunella hindsii plants or seeds for sale?
Or know of a good source to get them affordably?
I've heard it has the shortest juvenile period for a citrus species (essentially unedible due to size/seeds though)
-
I had a Hong Kong kumquat tree that I grew from seed, and the tree did produce fruit the first year. Definitely not eatable. I got tired of taking care of it and tossed it. This was 10 years ago, and I no longer remember where I got the seed.
-
Probably Ned. I had one too, pretty much useless.

Who is Ned?
They're used ornamentally in bonsai (despite being slow growers)
-
I want one too, just to complete my kumquat collection. I had two but they keep dying for reasons that weren't clear to me.
There's a local place that sells them occasionally, but seeds are probably the way to go for these.
-
Ned Rahn, but he closed his nursery.

I saw live plants being sold on ebay for 24 dollars. I didn't pick one up (think they're sold out now) as I'll probably use that bit of cash on seeds soon.

What a shame, the search continues.

franklazar has one. We can all beg him for seeds once his fruits.

I think (?) I've seen that name before. I'm still relatively new here so still learning names haha.
I'd gladly shoot him a message if he's open to it. If I see any seeds I may update this thread too.

Sorry it’s been a while since I’ve been online lol, I’m getting ready to trim mine back if anyone is interested in cuttings. It’s roughly a 2 year old plant from seed.. no fruit yet but perhaps someone can get the cuttings to root.
I’m going to give it a little boost of light here soon and try to induce fruiting this spring.
Out of stock now, but a place to watch:
https://nurcar.com/products/fortunella-hindsii?variant=7145253077035
I got mine from here and it was a very healthy plant. Again just still waiting on fruit.

Hello, the description for the plant sounds like it is a Procimequat. I emailed the seller for clarification and they were borderline rude and defensive about the name not matching the description. So it doesn't sound like they know wether that is a Hindsii or the hybrid Procimequat. What does your fruit look like?
-
Yeah I don't know what the Eustis parentage comment in the seller's description is about. The picture looks right for Hong Kong kumquat.
-
Right? I was hesitant to order one based on the description but after the bizarre interaction with the seller I'm looking elsewhere. The Woodlanders page is definitely selling a Procimequat, so if that is their source for the plant material then they are not actually selling a hindsii which is inaccurate at best and dishonest at worst
-
There is an exotic plant shop near me that sells them occasionally. I will have to go check again and see. I had bought two over the years and they always died on me. And we can always hope that franklazar's produce seeds soon :)

Looks like a HK to me! Tons of little fruits, crazy everywhere. Flowering again even... I will have seeds available soon. I'm thinking based on what it looks like, the plant and the dime sized fruits about to ripen, it is a Hong Kong kumquat. I could be mistaken anyways though.. I'll see if it has one or a few seeds once they ripen, that will be a final determining factor.

Found this on UCR: "The Hongkong wild kumquat fruits have only three or four segments. The ovaries of the procimequat hybrid under consideration usually show from four to five segments."
For fun I cut one open, seems to have 3 segments. My guess is it is indeed HK but I'll check again when fruits are ripe. Even if it is prociemquat, it's still a crazy cool hard to find hybrid, being a triploid that still gives seeds, however only producing nucellar seeds.

Very cool thanks for the pictures!
-
frank your photo looks like the hong kong kumquat plants I had before, I think you have the right one
-
I do agree Brian, I’ll hopefully have seeds within a month or two!
-
That's a nice lil crop coming in! keep us updated and I'm first in line for some of those seeds ;D
-
I counted around 40 fruits on the tree and about 50 more flowers coming! Started flowering and it doesn’t quit!!

Starting to ripen. Definitely is Hong Kong.. should have seeds soon.

Go kinzu go! *Fingers crossed*

looking good!

If anyone is looking for P-quat, woodlanders just sent me a nice little tree with 1 fruit on it. They still have them and are shipping this month only.
-
What is P-quat?
-
Procimequat maybe?
-
Yes, procimequat. I was lazy lol.
-
Did you sample the fruit on either one (kinzu or p-quat lol)? How do they taste
-
Neither, bud I've been told Procimequat is more lime like and actually had something to it, whereas Kinzu is basically just a seed or two with skin.
-
If people want on the list, just to see how many seeds I have to divide, send me a pm. Being there’s a lot that want the seeds I ask for shipping costs! I will send whole fruits. I have roughly 30-50 fruits. Some ripened, some not fully yet.
-
I eneded up buying the Hindsii from that nursey with the wrong description based on the pictures posted here. From that plant I rooted 2 cuttings successfully and grafted another cutting to poncirus. So I have 4 plants now lol. The plant wasn't cheap so I will probably put the 2 rooted cuttings on eBay or Etsy when they are bigger and keeping the original plant and the grafted cutting. I had 4 fruit set and some tiny flowers when the plant came but nothing to cross pollinate it with for hybridizing (how I would do this with such tiny flowers is another thing lol).
-
Post some pics! I purchased mine from nuncar and this is what I got haha. So mine came true. Mine was rather cheap from there, ran around $25.
-
This is an older picture, the plant is in my grow tent now for the winter. I'll get some new ones next time I get in there:

The fruit as of last week: (blotches on leaves is from spray of horticultural oil for spider mites)

If you do ever hybridize please keep us updated. I'm interested as the kinzu doesn't have many crosses compared to its other kumquat brethren.
-
I finally sampled some kinzu, they have a pungent taste that kinda reminds me of the time I tried Sichuan peppercorn.
-
Interesting! Did you eat it whole or separate from the seeds?
-

Popped the seed out and ate the peel, definitely didn't want to risk eating the seeds :o
They really are mostly skin and seed but skin came off easier than I anticipated as well. There is a tiny amount of flesh!
I could see some chef using it as a cupcake topper or something ;D
-
Now I am patiently waiting for mine to turn orange. How long did it take you? Mine set in August
-

I want to say mine took from mid July when it first pushed flowers till now to ripen. Not crazy long. 3-6 months I would say as some was mature before they turn orange as well.
-
Good to know! Btw they are easy to root from cutting and graft:
The cuttings are growing quicker than the graft to poncirus
(https://i.ibb.co/m9p9QCJ/20211026-140527.jpg) (https://ibb.co/m9p9QCJ)
-
I tried to root them before from cuttings, but had little luck. You got yours from nuncar?
I just plugged around 30 to root this time around to see how it goes now that I have upgraded my equipment.
-
Yes that's where I got it. I root all of my cuttings under a plastic fishtank outside in the shade. It gets humid and hot but the sun doesn't cook them. I use moist Coco coir and dip the cuttings in rooting powder (Indole-3-butyric acid). I haven't tried rooting them indoors yet but I've had success with other plants using a plastic ziplock bag instead of the tank in my grow tent
-
Poncirus+ cuttings and the hindsii in there somewhere lol
(https://i.ibb.co/M88VQPJ/Screenshot-20211026-142113.png) (https://ibb.co/M88VQPJ)
That’s pretty resourceful! I grow my cuttings now in a rather controlled environment. Fan kicks on above 80F, heat mat kicks on under 80F. Has 100% success on everything I’ve tried so far, so trying my new methods with the harder to root stuff. I’ve got 90% success out of finger limes so far.. waiting to see for oranges and kumquats. And the Kinzu now!

Very nice, you will make a lot of clones with that setup!
-
Where is the fan in your setup?

Looks great!
What kind of grow lights do you use?
-
I personally use sonofarm panels. Newer company, but great quality stuff. Otherwise for cheap lights I use bloom plus lights. Most of the cheaper ones all work the same with similar output. I’ve been testing lights for a few years now so if anyone’s interested I can do an actual breakdown of the on brand expensive stuff vs cheap knock offs.

Yes please do! I got a ViparSpectra xs2000 a few months back and have been quite happy with it. I'm now thinking about getting another but am curious what the higher-end brands have to offer.
-
I’ve tested all these below:
Mars Hydro (1000w, and 2500w, 120w and 260w actual)
Sonofarm (1000w and 4000w, 100w and 440w actual)
Viparspectra (1000w, ? Actual)
Unitfarm (1000w, 60w actual)
Canagrow (300w bulb, 60w actual)
Sansi LED (70w actual)
Bloom Plus (1000w, 80w actual)
And various burple lights I would never touch again lol.
In my opinion, the best is sonofarm. Same quality as Mars Hydro, only cheaper. Plus a 5 year warranty? Can’t beat it! Made with quality Samsung LM301B’s, plus genuine controllers.. It has fewer chips than the Mars, but run more power through each. A little lower power consumption overall, but very equivalent to Mars and runs around $100 less.
So sonofarm and Mars tie for output, but sonofarm sells them cheaper with a longer warranty. Viparspectra would be a good second place after the two tie, and bloom plus is not far behind (especially for the price). The brightness is definitely noticeable when comparing bloom plus to sonofarm, but quite similar to viparspectra. So due to the price point, I’d rather buy 2 bloom plus for the same price of 1 viparspectra lol.
Unit farm would come in next, but it has more of a harsh white light to it than a warm full spectrum. Still grows my trees well! I use it for newly grafted trees as it’s not so intense.
Sansi is my number 4, but when spending the money, I’d rather buy panels. Sansi sells their 70w for $70, and bloom plus panel is around $45. Bloom plus has much better coverage. Canagrow makes a really nice high powered bulb if you’re just looking for something small. $25 can’t beat that.
So anyway, sonofarm is my top (plus they’re all dimmable) I plan to buy more panels to replace the others as my trees grow and I feel like investing. In the pic below, left two panels are both sonofarm, on the right far back is my 2500w Mars, and the other two are both bloom plus. I’m using the viparspectra and other Mars over my rooted cuttings. All in all, my actual draw is around 1000w TOTAL using everything I have plus two root mats and 3 ventilation fans. If you look closely, you can see the difference in brightness of the chips. Sonofarm I feel takes the crown over all. I will note that the Mars has been used last winter so brightness does deteriorate overtime.

Really appreciate all that. The Sonofarm sf2000 is looking like a good purchase then. For what its worth, I found the reviews by Dr MJ Coco and Rows of Green on YouTube to be really informative and helpful

Sorry, I am a bit new to citruses. By P-quat do you mean procimequat? If so, I am very very interested. Thank you for your help.

I'm wondering if you have any seeds or plants, I had one once and would like one again.
Thank you for your response

I bought him out for now. They seemed a good project for the bonsai club. But I could spare a couple of fruit. PM me.
