Is Ott Mango under appreciated?
« on: June 21, 2021, 02:11:01 PM »
Seems to me that there are a lot of mangos that go unappreciated. Ott may be one of them. This Father's Day we had a mango tasting with about 15 varieties. about 10 participants ages 10 to 75.   Ott mango came in with ratings of 9-10, I had tasted before and thought it was just as good or better that some of the "top tier"  mangos.  In addition is a clean tree,  clean  and colorful fruit.  I have seen the tree and seems very resistant to our usual maladies that affect mangos in South Florida

It may sacrilegious to some but it was up there with Sweet Tart and under Pineapple pleasure.

You are not alone, I appreciate some of the older varieties just as much as the newer ones.
Don’t rush, take time and enjoy life and food.

Ott unappreciated? ..lols... Ott is unknown. I have never seen it mentioned here. I have never seen an Ott tree for sale.  Alex-Squam has everything. His true test will be to have an Ott tree. Mel Ott was a famous baseball player. This mango must have been named after him.

If Alex said bland that’s good enough for me to discount it. I’ll try anything once, unless Alex says it ain’t worth it lol.

Well, he might not have gotten a good one.  I betcha he'd be open to trying it again.  He's an open-minded guy.  I trust Carlos, too.  He's no dummy.

This is Julian Lara’s favorite mango. This variety was selected by William Ott from La Habra CA. He also culled Ott cherimoya ( back in the 1940’s ) a top tier moya to this day.

It looks like Julian would be your best bet, or at least a good place to start.

Carlos, besides Ott, Sweet Tart, and Pineapple Pleasure, what were the other varieties in the competition?

Yes John,  a few, including myself like Harvest, a large mango but tasty. No fiber but firm. I took the 1/2 for lunch today and it was really nice. Kathy's color and intense flavor was a group pleaser. Lemon Zest also in the 9-10 score.

The problems is that after a big dinner and a lot of mangos every one was full,  there was mango juicy every where, people passing pieces around. Who is going to suck on the next seed etc. We had a blast. My granddaughter wants to make it a fathers day tradition.  One of my sons-in-law said the  its  funnest thing I ever done. Go figure. A simple mango tasting.

In the future I will probably limit at 10 mangos max.  Is a great time to do this as a group. Fathers day is in the middle of mango season.  Plus a good way to celebrate the first time the 11+ dog of us could meet without mask.

You can’t have too many mangoes for a mango tasting.  Just get more people. Next Father’s Day make it Kosher so I can bring another 8!!!!!! Love you bro!!!!!

So next time you should probably start with the mango tasting on an empty stomach.  Limit your intake.  Then wait an hour or so before you have dinner.  (I'm so happy to have shed the mask.  After I got the second shot, I felt ready to face the world!  But I still keep my distance from people, especially the ones who remain with masks.)
