Tropical Fruit Discussion / South Florida October weather
« on: October 26, 2019, 12:19:15 PM »
Extremely hot. Nighttime lows 10 degrees above historical average for an extended period of time now.

Seeing a lot of late growth flushes emerging, which could mean a depressed mango crop in southeast Florida in 2020 due to reduced flowering in December/January/February.

9
Hey everyone, tomorrow I’ll be giving another mango talk to the Palm
beach Rare Fruit Council starting about 7:30pm.

The topic will be the new diseases impacting mango in south Florida with a little discussion of the current mango season as well. In past, the disease issue has only been a part of the talks but this one will center on them with a potential treatment protocol that I’ve been experimenting with. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Location is 531 north Military Trail, West Palm Beach, FL 33415

We’ve started selling budwood again. $4 per scion + shipping. Availability list below. These are trees large enough to harvest from and not under any proprietary restriction (ex. no coconut cream for this reason):

https://www.tropicalacresfarms.com/budwood-availability

If interested in ordering, send us a checklist to Tropicalacresfarms@gmail.com and we will look for what has active buds. Please take into consideration that some varieties are scarce due to high demand and not large trees (Cotton Candy , sugarloaf and Orange Sherbet perhaps chief among these)

Thanks for reading!

This talk may focus more on horticultural practices with some discussion of new varieties. Tons of history I’d like to talk about as well but gonna be limited in time.

And finally...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango talk near Bradenton tomorrow 2/12
« on: February 11, 2018, 12:07:21 PM »
Just a heads up for anyone who might be interested, I’ll be giving a talk to the Manatee Rare Fruit Council on mangos tomorrow at 7pm. The location is:
1303 17th St W, Palmetto, FL 34221

This talk will differ slightly from the one I gave in Venice last month as it will include some history of Mangos in Manatee County along with some disease updates.

22
Recently I met a tree buying customer named Golam who had travelled across India trying different Mangos. He informed me that the Himsagar in Florida was not the same as the Himsagar in India, where it is extremely popular.

I had tried the Florida “Himsagar” before, and found it to be an excellent fruit. But Golam described Himsagar as a large round shaped fruit. The supposed imposter grafted in Florida was an oblong/enlongated mango.

Upon examining these photos from India referencing Himsagar online and comparing them to display photos from the various Mango events in south Florida, I’ve come to the conclusion that the Florida Himsagar contained in the collections of the USDA and Fairchild is indeed a mislabeled variety.
