Tropical Fruit Discussion / Grafting citrus fruits
« on: November 12, 2015, 09:25:41 PM »
In this video, at the 10:15 mark, you can see the man grafting unripe citrus fruits (he said all kinds, such as Pomelo, orange, and mandarins) to a citrus tree. I have never seen anything like this. Wonder if we can do the same thing with Anonas.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Ylang Ylang?
« on: November 02, 2015, 01:27:06 AM »
Please bear with me. I know Ylang Ylang is not a tropical fruit, but I value the knowledge of the forum members here, so I am asking for your help. I am looking for a plant, actually a flower, from my childhood in Saigon, Vietnam. I included the location to say that the plant , which I never saw, was tropical. All I remember was my friend bringing what she called "Hoa Mong Rong" (literally translated as: Dragon Claw Flowers) to class. I did some search on the web and I think they maybe Ylang Ylangs. But if my memory serves me right, they resembled cacti more than the pictures of the Ylang Ylang flowers that I see on the web. They were (cactus) green, not yellow, with stiff curved petals. The flowers were the size of a small lemon with petals shaped like small curved fingers. They were very fragrant. That's all I can remember. If you grow Ylang Ylangs or have knowledge of them, your input is greatly appreciated.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Please ID my cherimoyas
« on: October 25, 2014, 04:31:30 PM »
They are both seedlings. The bumpy one is 5 yo, and the smooth one is 4. This is the first time they fruited, and the fruits (one each) are small, the size of a small apple.

Here is a pic of both of them.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Which root stock for mangos
« on: October 05, 2014, 11:40:24 PM »
I am planning on planting mango seeds in the ground to graft in the future. I have read that the best root stock for SoCal is Manila, but let say I would like to graft a Kent or a Keit, would an Indian type mango seed be more suitable to plant?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / My soursop seedlings (One year update)
« on: September 29, 2014, 12:35:31 PM »
These cute 5" tall soursops were from seeds kindly given to me by a forum member. I planted the seeds exactly 10 weeks ago today. Only 2 out of the 22 seeds didn't make it. I am planning on keeping them in this planter until next spring before I put them in separate pots, so I can cover them during the wintertime. Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong, but from my limited experience with soursop trees, I notice they lose their leaves when it's cold, and that although they love the hot temperature, they don't like hot sun. They prefer some shade. In the first picture, on the upper left corner you'll notice a stowaway Cherimoya, probably from a previous batch of them grown in this same planter.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Please ID my Atemoya
« on: September 26, 2014, 02:44:15 PM »
I bought the tree at Mimosa Anaheim 2 years ago. They only labeled it as Atemoya. Could you identify it or guess the closest variety it may be related to? Thanks in advance.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / paper thin Glenn mango seed
« on: September 07, 2014, 01:07:47 AM »
My Glenn mango purchased last year is around 4', with no branches, had 4 ripe large egg-size fruits. They are very sweet, but the seeds are paper thin. Does it mean the fruits were not pollinated?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Papaya propagation by cuttings?
« on: August 12, 2014, 12:12:43 AM »
Have you ever tried to propagate papayas by cuttings? If you were successful, would you mind sharing your method? I tried some search on the net, but couldn't find much.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Please ID lychee

I bought these at the Asian market. They have chicken tongues and taste pretty good, better than the smooth skinned ones, which I think are Mauritius.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / My mango seeds sprouted
« on: July 04, 2014, 06:20:37 PM »
These are store bought Ataulfos, planted last May. One has 3 sprouts welded together, so I'll keep all 3, but the other one has 2 separate sprouts. I read on GW, that the smaller sprouts are usually clones of the mother trees, or are they?

MOM Supermarket in FV (Euclid/Edinger) has Jackfruits for $0.58/lb, Lychees (green peel, pretty good) for $2/lb, Rambuttans for $1.89/lb, Bananas (I don't know the variety, but not your Chiquita ones) for $1/lb.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cherimoyas in one hole
« on: May 18, 2014, 12:42:21 AM »
How close can I plant 3 cherimoyas in one hole? Most of the seeds I collected from the UCI Taste Testing in Jan have sprouted, and I have marked their names. I would like to plant as many seedlings as I could to see if I can get lucky and come up with a Behl equivalent. :)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lychee Thread
« on: December 21, 2013, 12:45:01 AM »
For all of us who grow, or would like to grow Lychees, to share our experience.
I'll post pics of my trees soon, but for now I have a question. I want to plant a 4' Sweetheart in a corner of my front yard, that can be seen from the street. It will need wind protection, but I don't want to use burlap or any materials that are too conspicuous. I am thinking of using clear vinyl tarps attached to stakes around the tree. Do you guys think that will work?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango cultivation
« on: December 09, 2013, 12:24:37 AM »
What do you mango experts think of this?
Quote
Growers of grafted mangos in India resort to various expedients to check the vegetative activity of the tree and encourage the development of fruit. Thomas Firminger1 says: "The mango, like all other fruit trees, is much benefited by having the earth around it removed, and the roots left exposed for a space of two or three weeks. This should be done in November, and in December the roots should be well supplied with manure, and then covered in again with entirely fresh earth, and not that which had been previously removed." Woodrow notes that "the mango growers near Mazagon, Bombay, who produced such famous fruit before the land was occupied with cotton mills, applied ten pounds of salt to each tree at the end of September; this would arrest growth in October and November, and encourage the formation of flower buds. In a moist climate, and the intervening ground occupied with irrigated crops, this system is highly commendable, but with a dry climate it is unnecessary."

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Trace elements in greywater
« on: December 07, 2013, 03:23:29 PM »
I was searching about hand pollinating sapodillas on the net when I stumble upon the following post on Cloud Forest in 2006.
Quote
are you using grey water? (laundry and or bath water). one batch of laundry water can lock up all the trace element forever (they use very effective sequestering agents that bind essential elements)
Your thoughts?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Nam Doc Mai and Ataulfo mangoes
« on: October 26, 2013, 09:03:47 PM »
Hi everybody, I just saw some NDM and Ataulfo mangoes at the Asian stores here in Santa Ana, CA. They were $10/box. Nine in a box I think. The NDM are from Ecuador, and the Ataulfos from Brazil. I bought 1 NDM to see how it tastes. I must say I prefer the usual Manila and Kent mangoes I've always had so far.
I opened the husk, and here is a picture of the seed. Does the taproot come out of the pointy head next to the long brown string? or is it going to be the leaf shoot? And should I plant the seed with that part up? Thanks in advance. [][/img]
