The Tropical Fruit Forum

Please bear with me. I know Ylang Ylang is not a tropical fruit, but I value the knowledge of the forum members here, so I am asking for your help. I am looking for a plant, actually a flower, from my childhood in Saigon, Vietnam. I included the location to say that the plant , which I never saw, was tropical. All I remember was my friend bringing what she called "Hoa Mong Rong" (literally translated as: Dragon Claw Flowers) to class. I did some search on the web and I think they maybe Ylang Ylangs. But if my memory serves me right, they resembled cacti more than the pictures of the Ylang Ylang flowers that I see on the web. They were (cactus) green, not yellow, with stiff curved petals. The flowers were the size of a small lemon with petals shaped like small curved fingers. They were very fragrant. That's all I can remember. If you grow Ylang Ylangs or have knowledge of them, your input is greatly appreciated.

I am planning on planting mango seeds in the ground to graft in the future. I have read that the best root stock for SoCal is Manila, but let say I would like to graft a Kent or a Keit, would an Indian type mango seed be more suitable to plant?

I bought the tree at Mimosa Anaheim 2 years ago. They only labeled it as Atemoya. Could you identify it or guess the closest variety it may be related to? Thanks in advance.

Have you ever tried to propagate papayas by cuttings? If you were successful, would you mind sharing your method? I tried some search on the net, but couldn't find much.

These are store bought Ataulfos, planted last May. One has 3 sprouts welded together, so I'll keep all 3, but the other one has 2 separate sprouts. I read on GW, that the smaller sprouts are usually clones of the mother trees, or are they?

How close can I plant 3 cherimoyas in one hole? Most of the seeds I collected from the UCI Taste Testing in Jan have sprouted, and I have marked their names. I would like to plant as many seedlings as I could to see if I can get lucky and come up with a Behl equivalent.

What do you mango experts think of this?

Growers of grafted mangos in India resort to various expedients to check the vegetative activity of the tree and encourage the development of fruit. Thomas Firminger1 says: "The mango, like all other fruit trees, is much benefited by having the earth around it removed, and the roots left exposed for a space of two or three weeks. This should be done in November, and in December the roots should be well supplied with manure, and then covered in again with entirely fresh earth, and not that which had been previously removed." Woodrow notes that "the mango growers near Mazagon, Bombay, who produced such famous fruit before the land was occupied with cotton mills, applied ten pounds of salt to each tree at the end of September; this would arrest growth in October and November, and encourage the formation of flower buds. In a moist climate, and the intervening ground occupied with irrigated crops, this system is highly commendable, but with a dry climate it is unnecessary."

Hi everybody, I just saw some NDM and Ataulfo mangoes at the Asian stores here in Santa Ana, CA. They were $10/box. Nine in a box I think. The NDM are from Ecuador, and the Ataulfos from Brazil. I bought 1 NDM to see how it tastes. I must say I prefer the usual Manila and Kent mangoes I've always had so far.
I opened the husk, and here is a picture of the seed. Does the taproot come out of the pointy head next to the long brown string? or is it going to be the leaf shoot? And should I plant the seed with that part up? Thanks in advance. [][/img]
