E4 Abiu the best for taste
« on: February 03, 2021, 05:58:20 PM »
E4 abius are ripening again and I forgot how good they are. At 300g to 900g they are whoppers although the first to ripen are a bit closer to 4oog. They have the richest taste of any abius I have tried with strong caramel and vanilla and they are very sweet. They are almost latex free even when half green. I rate them ahead of the illustrious z4 but they do have softer and more transparent flesh.

This one had 4 seeds instead of the usual 0ne or two and it wasn't even big.

The Z4s have whiter and firmer flesh and I think the E4 is almost latex free when ripe whereas Z4 still has traces. The Z4s are also orangey yellow when ripe and never have a nipple but also max out at 900g to even 1kg. They are the two best types in my opinion.

Most people believe z4 is the best and having firm flesh which allow for good transport makes it the most commercially desirable. Prices people are getting for big z4 fruit in southern markets are crazy. Z4 is no slouch and it is just my opinion that in a battle of the heavyweights E4 comes out a feather ahead for backyard enthusiasts. If you have a Z4 from Trina you have a real winner.

I havent actually tried a Z4 abiu so I trust yours and many other opnions, the abiu I tried were unknown variety on my mates farm they were certainly nice enough for me to buy a tree straight away.  Mine are from the mossman markets so will see what will come of it.  Im planning to do the salleras fruit tour as soon as they open in April and visit Trina nursery.

If you have any E4 seeds to sell, hit me up! Been looking for a good abiu to put in the ground here. 😁

A seedling would be a new variety though

E4 is a broad leafed abiu with big mango like foliage and so quite different from Z4. I have had local people waiting on seeds for a long time so I am spread a bit thin. My brother Stevo who is also on this forum got some of the fruit but he doesn't have many seeds either. I just hope the tree produces a few more fruit.

Looks like you have been sticking your beak into the abiu gene pool, but don't abuse the abiu's status to raise hopes of those in the sub-tropics, because it's not happening. Latex free is nice, now I will have to find some other Pouteria to do the pout-face.
Eugenia luschnathiana = CURUIRI.    Talisia esculenta = PITOMBA
I do not recommend people deal with Fruit Lovers, Prisca Mariya or Fernando Malpartida

True, but that’s kinda the fun part for me lol! If we never tried out new seedlings, we’d all have the same old grafted varieties after awhile.

They do grow pretty true. Plenty of people have dived into the shallow end of the gene pool MS and there seems to be a real diversity of characteristics in abiu. Latex lovers may be disappointed alright and so far as where the climate is suitable for abiu there is a bit of literature. They are not fans of frost, I know that but Florida and SEQ people may be better placed to know how low they can go.

The E4 abiu is still pumping out fruit abd 30 or more were picked from my tree in the last 2 days alone.

Mike do you like to eat abui when they are still white inside or translucent? I prefer white stage.

Mike is E4 the only kind of abiu that you grow?

The flesh colour varies between opaque white like Z4 to translucent yellow, and translucent white. You just eat them when mostly yellow. I have 2 Z4 trees as well as a big E4. Other big spherical low latex types with good taste include Gray, Inca Gold and Z2 and I know people with trees of these. Surprisingly the majority of trees I see around the place seem to have small fruit that stain and bruise easily and have too much latex.

I'm amazed that there's enough commercially grown abiu in Queensland that not only do you get to choose a variety, but they have cute little stickers on them!

They are a high value crop so need to be well presented in southern cities where there high prices are.

Seeds were sent to Whitman I think it was of variety Gray a long time ago and they will still be circulating in Florida under a different name. It seems abiu almost identical to Z4 are now grown in Taiwan also.

People asked the same about lychees and scions and it is very possible for them to be sent its just no one has done it.
