Tropical Fruit Discussion / Question about my Lychee tree...
« on: April 30, 2016, 04:03:41 PM »
I noticed today that I have quite a few yellow leaves on the interior part of my Lychee tree...these are mature leaves. The tree is 5 years planted and has baby fruits. Is it normal to have these yellow mature leaves fall off this time of year or am I not watering enough...its been quite hot and dry here lately.

Thanks for any help  :)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Liquid Copper Fungicide...
« on: March 12, 2016, 09:41:25 AM »
Just got done spraying my mango blooms ( I know I should have done it sooner) but got lazy. All the trees are in bloom though only 10%-15% of them are open now. My question is when I spray again in 7-10 days which is what the directions says, I'm thinking a lot more of them will be open by then...can I spray the open blooms? How many applications and how long between treatments?

What are your experience with spraying the open blooms with Liquid Copper Fungicide...

Thanks in advance for all for the advise and help! You guys are great, I always appreciate the helpful advise  ;D

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Maha Chanok Mango...
« on: February 28, 2016, 10:36:24 AM »
Sooo...because I was too impatient to taste fruits from my own Maha I let it fruit sooner than I should have causing my tree to stop growing after the first few fruits were picked...really halted the new growths  :'(. When I saw some swelling the last few weeks I assumed they were blooms since all my other trees were putting out mixed blooms/leaves right now. I thought I would try something new. I decided to start fertilizing my Maha. I started several weeks ago when I first saw the first signs of swelling hoping to halt the flowers and let it put out new growths instead. Coincidence or not they are now bursting with  new growths, no blooms that I can find. Almost every branch has 1-4 new shoots growing. Very good news since I really need this tree to grow this year so I can let it fruit next season.

I wanted to get new growths instead of blooms right away instead of letting it fruit...wait till they are pea size then remove them and wait several more weeks before they start growing again. Thought I would share my method in case anyone out there might want to try it on their small/young mango trees? Not saying it will work for you but it did for me  ;)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Where are the Mango Blooms?
« on: December 16, 2015, 08:48:28 AM »

I'm guessing since its been a very warm/hot above normal temps for Nov. and Dec. there are NO blooms or even the hint of any blooms in sight ( at least not for me) in Central FL...

Anybody out there in this neck of the woods have any signs of blooms? Looks like the blooms won't show up till late January or early Feb which may not necessarily be a bad thing if we have a late frost...time will tell.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / How to Freeze Lychees
« on: May 30, 2015, 11:37:06 AM »

What's the best way to freeze fresh Lychees? Do you wash them first and dry them or just stick them in freezer zip lock bags? Is it this simple or is there a better way?

Thanks for any help/sggestions!  :)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / My Freeze Damage Feb. 2015
« on: February 22, 2015, 05:36:56 PM »
Its only been 2 1/2 days but the damage to my blooms and new growths/leaves/small twigs is becoming more and more evident  :'( :'(

The only 2 spared from the "freeze's wrath" are (2) I covered and a Cogshall that's planted underneath some Oak trees (no blooms yet)...the Pickering I covered sustained some damage as well, several blooms are fried but a few on the back of the tree made it...the one that had NO damage at all is my young Maha, thank goodness that one is just starting to bloom!

My Mauritius blooms seem to be "fried" as well...but the tree looks GREAT! So it seems 29°-32° didn't seem to hurt the tree ( only the blooms)  :'(...

Looks like a dismal year for mangoes for me this season...at least the trees will survive  :)

So...what trees got damaged in your yard??

Just a heads up for those of us living in North and Central FL...so far they are calling for 34 degrees for me. Inverness and Ocala saying 30 and 31 degrees (weather.com) for the morning lows on Saturday, Sunday morning slightly warmer...

There goes all my Lychee and Mango blooms  :'( :'( :'(

Good luck All!! Fingers crossed it won't be too bad...

Citrus General Discussion / Citrus Fertilizing Questions
« on: January 23, 2015, 07:30:11 AM »
Should I fertilize my Citrus trees now? I have a small 5 year old dwarf satsuma, a one year old Dancy and a 6-7 year old Meyer lemon. We have a pretty good chance of rain tonight/tomorrow and would like to take advantage of the rain to water it in...but not sure if I need to wait till the end of Feb.

They should start blooming soon, I'm seeing the beginnings of a few teeny tiny buds appearing on my Dancy...

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango Fertilizing 0-0-50
« on: January 16, 2015, 10:35:24 AM »

Is now the time to add 0-0-50 fertilizer to my blooming and almost blooming mango trees? Or should I wait till Feb.?

Also I called a local nursery and they carry High Yield 0-0-60...Can I sue this instead or is that completely different?

Thanks in advance...appreciate any tips and advise on how much to apply as well.

My Lychee tree will be 4 years old (planted in the ground Feb. 2011)...its starting to bloom now...I watered it today for
the first time since our last rainfall back in Sept. I do have irrigation which comes on once or twice a week. But this the first time I've hand watered with a hose...

Just wondering what you guys do with your 4+ year old Lychee trees...are they on their own...or do you still give them supplemental watering this time of year when its very dry especially during bloom time?

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Decided to Plant my Maha Chanok...
« on: August 05, 2014, 11:10:16 AM »
Purchased it Jan. 2013 from Excalibur...fruited for the first time this year has about 3 mangoes...stalled about 4 weeks ago, it doesn't look like its grown much since. I figured I'd go ahead and plant it inground now its already Aug. and I wanted to give it at least 4 months to settle in its new home before our cooler/weather gets here in early Dec.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / I think my Mahas stopped growing?
« on: July 29, 2014, 03:08:06 PM »

It seems like the few Mahas I have on my small (potted) tree has quit growing...they appear to be the same size today that they were several weeks ago? Will this ripen at this size? Its appx. 5" long and about 2-2 1/2 wide...

Anyone else seeing "no" sizing up with their potted Maha?

Not sure if I got a little over zealous today...I found this one with a very nice blush and decided to pick it. Then wondered if maybe I should have waited lol...Too late!!

Think it will ripen on the counter? ??? ::) :-\

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lychee Mauritius...when is it ready?
« on: May 22, 2014, 07:24:10 AM »

A few of my Mauritius lychees are slowly coloring up...can anyone venture a guess how much longer before they're ready to pick? I want to pick them before the critters so...I'm guessing lychees don't ripen after you pick them like mangoes?

Thanks!!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Keitt Mango
« on: May 01, 2014, 03:47:48 PM »
Last year my Keitt didn't bloom because I gave it a semi pugging very late in the season because it was getting pretty scraggly/lanky looking. I made sure I didn't prune it at all last summer. This year it has the most fruits I've ever seen on this tree. The lanky/scraggly growth habit is something I'm just going to have to accept and live with since its one of my favorite mangoes...

Considering this tree is 7 years old its not very large due to freeze damage a few winters and is planted in not the best location... it doesn't get that much direct sun (Large Oak trees behind it keep it shaded 60-70% of the year...)

Hopefully, I won't have a lot of fruit drop and at least one third or more make it to maturity...

And just for the heck of it I thought I would post a couple of pictures of this tree when it was severely damaged by freeze back in Dec. 2010...here's the poor tree after  :(
