Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Cold resistance for Finger limes
« on: December 25, 2015, 03:12:14 PM »
Luc,
i live in sf bay area , and i have two  outside the house in the coldest part of the yard for 3yrs now and it's doing well. I have them in 50gal ceramic pot. They do much better and grow faster then my other citrus trees that are in the grounds. I think the one in the grounds are suffering because of gofers. I get lime every year and they are in blooms now.

i'm thinking of using chicken wires. Make the chicken wires into a box(box because i have too many gophers) , then use black weed cloth on the inside of chicken wire. Then add barks and compost for the mango tree.  What do you guys think about this method??

Peter,
It was planted from seed in that 6inch pot 6yrs ago, the roots completely takes over the glass pot below it.   I have not repotted it at all, nor have I added new soil to it.  All I add is just tap water every other week.  it grows about 1-2 new fronds during spring/summer.  I kinda like keep it small so that it can be a house plant.  There are no bugs attacking at all.  It stays in that corner 365day/yr.  I do use the needle to pop my pimples.  Works better than anything else.

We will see if it will give me any fruits in 30yrs from now if I do live to give update then.

You said it flowers in 3-4yrs?  Do you have pictures?

Bush2Beach, the weed cloth is just for nights. I remove them in the morning.

tonite is low 47. My back is really really hurting, I only brought the tree that has new flushes inside. And the others that don't have flushes yet, stay outside tonite with black weed covered.

thanks everyone.   I have 30 of them in 3gal each. It is so tiring to bring them in/out of the house which is what I have been doing for the last few nights.   The ivory tree stayed outside and covered with weed cloth on Monday night(47F low) , it has  a new flush and I noticed it was looking wimpy on the new flush on Tuesday morning .  Tonite low will be 46F,  all 30 tree are in the house now. It will be outside tomorrow in the sun, But I think I will leave them out on Friday night when the lows are in the 49F, then just cover them with the black weed cloth.  the 13X13 foot greenhouse is still being built.   I take better care of my plants than myself.  My back is starting to hurt from all the bending up and down.

I like to know at what temp we need to start bring mango inside for protection? Got some mango that are 3gal from top tropical and plantogram.  Thanks

totally disagree on the durian.

It's my #1 favorite fruit , along with mangosteen, cherimoya, and mango.

Erik,
there are no yellowing leaves, they are all green leaves. I broke the tip off from one of the leaves and crushed it in my hand. The only smell was grassy smell.  I didn't pick up the perfumey smell you refer to . Thanks for the confirmation guys. i think I will keep the tree and not return to seller then.

But doesn't alphonse have a very uniq characteristics of being droopy/laggy?  The one I receive from Topt doesn't exhibit the droopy trait. All the branches are straight up.
