What mango variety begins with the letter Y?
« on: December 20, 2014, 11:57:27 AM »
My OCD and need for completion demands that I have a mango variety from every letter in the alphabet.  Thanks to Excalibur and the Quidnau, I am missing only a Y.  Ideally, I would like it to taste good but, at this point, beggars can't be choosers.  Anything with a Y will do.  Ladies and Gentlemen, your guidance is very much appreciated.

Stop being lazy. You have full access to "the mango list."

With that being said, the only Y mango I saw on the list was "Young."

Why would I go to all that trouble when I have you sitting at home staring at a baby monitor with nothing to do.  Thank you for your efforts but I am not sure if Young will satisfy the OCD since it was rebranded to Tebow.  Perhaps after the next diaper change you can really do some digging and earn your keep.

Young is the only one I see on the list. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mango_cultivar

Other than Young, I've not heard of a mango cultivar with a name that's starts with a Y, unless its a rare cultivar from another country.

Just because pine island called it something else doesn't mean it's original name changed. I sell the fruit as "Young"

There is also Yuwen, a Taiwanese mango

I wanted to buy Yuwen last week but the vendor told me it is the same as Chakrapat (emperor) which i allready have.

The thai gave it that name i guess.

Yuwen sure looks a lot like Irwin, a mango the Taiwanese  cannot pronounce or spell.

Yu wen is an improved irwin in Taiwan.  Its bigger than Irwin and taste similar.  It has red skin which is appealing to the taiwanese.  It has be be ripened off the tree though.  In taiwan they use chemical ripening.

Here you can see both mango's, Yuwen and Chakrapat. This website doesn't name them the same way so i don't know if they are the mango's.
These pics are made in Thailand.

To me Chakrapat looks darker red then Yuwen.

USDA's list shows YOUNG as the only mango that starts with Y. This was brought from St Lucia by Fairchild/Dorsett/Walter on 3/8/1932.

Hey,

Can I get access to the mango list?  I have been asking but so far no response.

I would greatly appreciate it.

Which list? Its not listed in the GRIN database. But the 'Young' from Florida is a different mango, bred in the 1960s by David Sturrock.

(1)
The GRIN database does not list David Sturrock’s YOUNG mango because its Germplasm is not available.
The complete database does list YOUNG mango with an Accession Number MIA 31409 that was recorded in April 1986.
For more;
http://www.ars-grin.gov/cgi-bin/npgs/acc/display.pl?1101934

(2)
Now the complete database;

Go to
http://www.ars-grin.gov/npgs/acc/acc_queries.html

Now fill out the form, step-by-step as I list below,
Advanced queries
Taxonomy
Taxon
Enter Mangifera indica
Additional Criteria
All Repositories
Check Any Status
Check Any Status
Check Any Time
Check Taxonomic Sort
Check Include historical and unavailable
Enter 5000 in the window for Choose the number of Hits
Submit Request

The resulting list would be in pdf and hyperlinked.

At the bottom, it will ask if you want to download in MCPD format.

You should click DOWNLOAD and it will give you the result in EXCEL with many more fields including HISTORY of the mango accessions.

Please let me know if it doesn't work.

Thank you.
