Big Red Sugar Apple
« on: April 29, 2013, 06:01:59 PM »
Who else is growing this besides its source, FloridaGreenMan Noel?  How much do you like it?  How is the texture and flavor?  Is it one of the best if not the best sugar apple?  I'm still hoping to get a little tree to plant someday.

It's the best sugar apple that I've tasted.  The texture is great no grittiness and it has a raspberry cream flavor in addition to the normal sugar apple taste, at least to me.  I've a small seedling in the ground that's growing great, I'll let you know in a couple years if it true to type.

I can get one or two small grafted big reds...you'd have to pick up locally in Orlando.

Seems like everyone wants this sugar apple variety.

I would like to graft this variety onto my phet pakchong tree if possible.

The red one in the hand on the pic is not a big sugarapple though. The Phet pakchong get much bigger.

A Phet Pakchong is not a Sugar Apple per se. It's an Atemoya backward crossed to a Sugar Apple and that explains the huge size compare to a true Sugar Apple.

But is it better than an atemoya?

Yes a Phet pakchong is mixed but i also bought/got big normal sugar-apples in Thailand. They were also much bigger then the red one on the pic and not phet pakchong if i remember well.

I have no idea if this red one will grow in ultra-tropics and is graftable on the pet phakchong. I only know that i like the color a lot. My phet pakchong is just planted and never fruited so far.

I was wondering if anyone knows of any nurseries that have the tree that produces that big nice looking sugar apple that fgm is holding? Also what is the name that nurseries would know it by? I am interested in adding a sugar apple tree to the yard but not sure where to start.  Thanks

Jonathon Crane has some nice reds at TREC in Homestead, so I'm sure they are out there.

Is that a variety name or just a description of color?  we see similar here in markets and on some trees sometimes, but more purple than red like the above picture.  i personally found them the same as green.
