Title: Coconut palms in Sarasota, FL
Post by: SonnyCrockett on July 09, 2018, 08:19:48 AM
I'm not sure of the types, so let me know if you recognize them.
I was just surprised to see so many coconuts in Sarasota.  A few even had fruit on them.  These were all on Siesta Key, but I've seen quite a few around town close to the water.

This one had an orange trunk that looked different than the others.  The coloring didn't show up very well in this picture.  Any idea what variety?

These two looked like they had something wrong with them.

Coastal Sarasota is a micro Zone 10.  Coco palms can grow as far north as St. Pete Beach though they often get beat up after a hard freeze.  Normal northern boundary on the West Coast is around Ft. Myers.  You aren't likely to see coco palms very far inland in the Sarasota area.

Yup, Coastal areas by Sarasota all the way up to St Petersburg even by Clearwater have Cocos. Not inland. On the East Merrit Island is about as far North. Nothing in Central INLAND Fl.

That is cool :)

I was really surprised to see a fruiting coconut in kingscliff, northern NSW recently which is even cooler according to climate averages (but never a freeze). I planted one here just to see what happens.

Not true. Driving on US27 (North of SR 70) before reaching Lake Placid, there is a Inn near a small lake with 7-8  40-50ft tall coconut palms. 10-12ft Coconut palms can also be see scattered in the Lake Placid Area. I have yet to see one in Sebring.
