Title: Jackfruit any Good
Post by: carcarlo on May 25, 2019, 01:25:20 PM
Wow, that's crazy cheap for jackfruit. It's 2$ / pound here. Sometimes 3$.

One of these days I will try one of these!!! I have no ideal if I would like it, but I see a lot of people buying them, some are 20 +  pounders. (https://i.postimg.cc/RNzrNJqT/IMG-0665-1.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/RNzrNJqT)

It's $1.99 a pound here, and I'm fortunate I can find it at all.   Sometimes they sell slices or chunks instead of having to buy a whole fruit.

Jackfruit is possibly my favorite fruit.  My daughter loves it too.  Nobody else in my family likes it.  You'll just have to try and see.

Thanks Brian, if they sold slices here that would give me the opportunity to try it, but buying a hole one I don't know about that.

I am surprised you don't have some trees going now? I saw on Craiglist
a guy selling seedlings that were from a tree growing in Lehigh Acres.
Lehigh Acres is 9b and pretty close to what you experience weatherwise.
I don't think they are more sensitive to cold then custard apple? I tried it
a couple years ago and really enjoyed it. I planted 3 of the seedlings this
year. They were only 5 bucks each but very small. Buy a fruit and plant some
seeds?

You can sometimes find it frozen at the grocery

You can often find smaller packages frozen at Asian groceries.

I want to love it, but I canít get past the funk.

Acheta, I have heard that the Funk is something else, I will try it someday, but growing a Plant that holds a Fruit that huge I don,t think I have room for, and as long as they are .79 cents a lbs. you cant beat that.
I have seem some in this same market that are 30lbs.
Pan, I don't blame you for the funk, i myself have a weak stomach.
Coach, maybe they remind you of those sneakers laying around in the locker rooms, lol.

Have a Great Memorial Day Weekend

Sleepdog, that's expensive that means one of those 25 lb. Jack fruit would generate $200.00 if cut and sold by the pound wow.

And if you plant 7 acres 14 feet apart in 3 years you will make 5 million dollars.
I lived next to a macadamia farm once and that was his hustle. But one day he would tell
me if I planted 7 acres in 5 years I would make 3 million dollars and the next time If I plant
5 acres in 3 years I would make 7 million dollars, it was always 3, 5, 7, but never the same order.
I was at my cricket farm for 9 1/2 years next door to him and he sure didn't seem like he was making
millions? It turns out he died a few years back and was in debt?

Especially when you consider that only a few ounces of that is actually edible.  A little more if you eat the seeds.

Jack fruit is one of my favorites as well. There's plenty at the local asian markets here.
I usually get my fill when I am in southeast asia.
There is a distinct smell to them (not like durian) but I can see how it can be off-putting to some.

Lol, so true!  I once bought a slice in a hurry and it only ended up with 1 whole (uncut) seed in it.  I basically paid like $3-4 for Jackfruit rag, totally conned! Lol, lesson learned though.

My gold nugget has maybe 50+ fruits on it and I can't get $3 each for them. Go figure.

carcarlo,

Go to the MD oriental market 1106 E Fowler Ave, Tampa, FL 33612, They should have partial cuts. Otherwise, try Fresh Market or wholefoods.
