Tropical Fruit Discussion / Irma Deaths
« on: December 07, 2017, 03:27:53 PM »
I thought these would come back but they're dead.  The Pickering mango and vexator were great producers. The vexator produced thousands of fruit a year.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Plinia Ašu Paulista 'Otto Anderson'
« on: June 24, 2017, 05:09:35 PM »
Just to end any controversy about the seeds I've offered as Otto Anderson. Pictures I've posted were of almost ripe fruits and they had a reddish tinge to them and a Brazilian member was quizzical about this and didn't think it was the real thing. Here is a photo of the ripe fruit. As I stated before this is known Plinia Ašu Paulista 'Otto Anderson' and is probably the best tasting of any known jabuticabas.

These seeds are available if anybody wants them. Picked today. $7 each and $2.60 domestic shipping.

How does the fruit taste?  Similar to red jabo?

Brad

Different taste then the red with a thicker skin. The red is really sweet because of the aureana cross. You don't get that intense sweetness with the restinga. It's sweet but toned down.

Will you ship them or just local pickup ?

River

Never even thought about shipping them. Seems like it would be too cost prohibitive. But if you want to pay for the shipping I'll look into it. What size are you thinking about?

Once in a great while that may happen to my vines but to get any sort of major fruit I have to hand pollinate.

My passiflora quadrangularis fruit are growing nicely. To have fruit set I usually have to hand pollinate this species. I cross pollinated p. lauriflolia with my quad and am waiting to see what happens.

All of the Otto Anderson seeds have been sold. There will be more in a few weeks.

Ray, does Otto live up to the hype? How does it taste compared to other Jabos?

It's beyond a doubt the best tasting jabuticaba by far. It has a unique taste unlike any other and has a thin skin as a bonus and that's also sweet. Imagine all the flavors of  fruit loop cereal. That's as close as I can come to describing. I've never eaten a jabo as delicious.

One of my cambuca's is blooming again. Hopefully the tree rats, squirrels and birds will keep their distance. I'll try to remember to wrap the fruit in aluminum foil.

How many crops do you usually get each year on the Grimal?

3-4 crops. I keep the soil soaked. That's the major key to great production I would say.

Maybe its fruit is immature, so red, my Jabuticaba Ašu Paulista, when mature has fruits is almost black.

Jabuticaba ašu paulista, like all other Paulistas, is classified as Plinia Cauliflora.

Yes. The fruit is red then turns dark when mature.
