Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mammea time, spring fruit

Gotta change the location, currently in the Caribbean. Flavor is like an apricot crossed with a mango on this one, most just taste like an apricot. I dont think this plant would grow in the south west unless you had a temperature controlled green house. They start off growing really slowly, plateau for a bit, then go skyward fast after a few months.

Hopefully I'll get one in a few years

Do you have seedlings or grafted stock?

Spring time/Mamey apple time here, having fun tasting many different ones but this particular variety has been my favourite for decades. Some pics of the fruit peeled and cut up. The seeds come out of this one with our any hassle. All around goodness

Have so many of these trees, they get tall and the nuts hold a lot of water. Taste the same as a regular nut just the water and fibers are pink. May cross one onto a dwarf if I get bored to see what I get in a few years time. Haha.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Wtb "big" green sugar apple
« on: October 11, 2017, 12:57:16 PM »
Subject heading says it all, I have a variety of sugar apples, but no green ones that get over 14oz. If anyone has Noel's "big green" or some other type I would be interested in some seeds.

Thanks

Not fiberless, but has a minimum  amount for sure. Definitely  not raggy like some types. Tastes good too haha!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mid-week forage
« on: November 05, 2016, 09:27:47 AM »
Went mid-week with my son on some family and friends  properties to grab some fruit to get seed for root stock and to eat of course. The soursop, because these trees thrive in a very wet environment (gully) with no apparent  issues to the trees or fruit. The sugar  apple because this particular tree is surrounded by others who habe succumbed to mummified fruit and is happily pushing out fruit that for the most part are unscathed. The breadfruit, guava, tumeric and bayleaf are mainly  for my eating pleasure haha, take a look:

p.s. please ignore my loc as it changes throughout  the year lol

I like sugar apples, I love atemoya and soursop. The only thing sugar apple has going for it that is better than atemoya is that it is a month or so earlier in season, and it sets fruit better without hand pollination. Otherwise atemoya blows sugar apple away in terms of taste, fruit to seed ratio and cold tolerance.

What Atemoya are you working with Dom?

Did anyone mention  mulberry? Those leaves are excellent fodder.

You might be over thinking it a bit.

needs some composted manure and maybe a watering or two with some fish hydrolysate, looks nitrogen deficient.
