Citrus General Discussion / Re: Citrus greening infected Satsuma?
« on: August 15, 2015, 03:18:09 PM »
where in Louisiana???

I tend to agree with Mike. i find it odd the closest fruit is only 1/5 of a water growing weed...but as far as tropicals go...i tried a durian yesterday, i don't care if its twice the nutrients of watercress, im not eating it!

3
wouldn't we all be dead by now?

4
well see that sounds about right. I have spider mites on my tangerine, and it didn't occur to me that it might be something related causing completely different damage...my mature fruit had the red rust, but the timing for it made me think it was cold damage also...I considered phytophthora, at this point I honestly don't know, its certainly been wet enough, but this is the only tree getting it. I guess either way there may be no saving it...

so whats the best to use on the rust mites for such a heavy infection?

5
you can see it scrapes off with a fingernail, but the peel under it isn't right, its definitely affecting the peel...it still doesn't strike me as scab? nothing I searched came up looking like this.
the second picture is just cold damage from the winter, I think unrelated, but in the interest of full disclosure. my tree doesn't have canker anymore, but I do have leafminers, a little greasy spot im working on, and generally seems to be in decline. I had 500 fruit last year, and this year there is barely 100 on the tree, do they usually alternate produce?

edited....the more I look at the cold damage the more it bothers me that my tree is dying. if the bark is the most important part for transfer of nutrients, then I have a problem here, there isn't much left. it didn't get that cold last year compared to the year before, and I didn't cover it thinking it would be ok, but the rootstock obviously didn't like it...think I killed my tree?

I don't think its either. too light colored to be sooty, and don't look like any scab ive ever seen. ill try to get a better pic tomorrow, I didn't realize the front fruit was so blurry

Citrus General Discussion / whats causing dirty looking grapefruit
« on: June 19, 2015, 11:09:46 AM »
what is this on my grapefruit?  you can see a few fruit that just look dirty, and one next to them in the background that's still green. this isn't dirt, or anything like sooty mold. whats causing this?

Im new to tropicals and recently came into some cuttings and seedlings and am wondering which would be better suited for growing in a pot in zone 9a or so? im in new Orleans and winters usually have a light freeze and 1 or 2 frosts every season. from what im reading none of these like below 40 degrees but I want personal experience from what you've seen survive. I basically want the least likely to survive outside in the winter in a pot, the other 2 will have to hold their own in ground. so the options are purple haze dragonfruit, champagne mango, and a papaya. for whatever its worth, I have no preference to which I want to survive, I will eat them, I suppose mango would be my fave, never had dragonfruit.

Millet, I think he is just very devoted to his cause...GMO is coming, it don't take a genius to figure that out. he seems to have more knowledge than the rest of us. don't you want to know what he knows? or is it all conspiracy theory?

Citrus General Discussion / citrus facebook group

back when the forum split up, I had started a group thinking that was a decent idea as a backup plan. since then ive turned it into something entirely different.  since I came down with citrus canker, ive been trying to get the word out about the disease here in new Orleans, and its slow going...one person I added, has a different perspective about citrus canker and greening and I thought id get more people involved...his basic idea is that round up causes greening, and that this whole thing is a push to bring in GMO citrus like everything else in our lives...id like your opinions?

for those  of you on facebook, I welcome you...the rest of you, I did invite him to the group, we'll see if he joins

Citrus General Discussion / Re: rangpur lime
« on: January 06, 2015, 08:47:42 PM »
I forgot to add, as you can see in the pics, the tree has a lot of competition. there is an azalea, mimosa, and other garbage within 5 feet of it. definitely in the root zone. that's why I ask if the soil or something else could be affecting its flavor.

don't try this at home, but the story goes, my mom planted a Satsuma seed and a lemon seed next to each other.  this is what came up ::)

so it had been a few years since the tree produced well enough that I could get some, but this year has two hundred I guess.  still tart as the day is long, and very very acid, but once you get past the first overwhelming bite, there is some sweetness in there. its definitely a tangerine or hybrid, I think ill patent it as the sweetart!...id like to send some just so people could taste, but I don't think the quarantine will let me, ill have to look into it

I CAN VOUCH FOR IT TO WORK.  ONE A DAY, AND CUT BACK ON SUGAR INTAKE AND CALORIES. WEIGHT DROPS QUICK. NOW IT MAY BE FLUID WEIGHT OR SOMETHING ELSE, BUT IF YOU NEED TO LOSE 10 LBS QUICK ID DO IT

sorry for the caps, didn't mean to yell :)

14
what one shood i get the  Pixie or the  Gold Nugget ?????

BOTH

15
home grown clementines would certainly taste better, and fit what conditions you want, but their are better out there.  I haven't had very many others to be able to say good options...you look into a pixie or kishu mandarin?

16
you forgot about tangerines, they mandarins too...it might be easier for us to help you if you told us what you were looking for in a fruit. as in sweet sour tart, big small, rich flavor, whatever...

most all the satsumas are great
the only clementines ive had are from walmart, and id be better off eating cardboard, so I cant speak of them
some of the mandarins are the best youll ever eat according to most people on this forum...page, ponkan...

so what are you looking for?

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Leaf miner problem
« on: December 29, 2014, 11:07:03 AM »
Mark don't you think you should be able to paint it broadly? its the same ingredient in both, the numbers should add up close to the same if they use the same ratios. that's all Im curious about.  ive had someone pose a question to me, about the use of pesticides and whether they can poison a tree, and Im just trying to get better informed. if this stuff does sit in the ground for 7 or more years after its sprayed, that's a little scary.

I understand that Millet, I just believe the occasional ladybug dining on aphid gets killed in the crossfire.

ok, so 43 % and 75% answers one question...are those diluted to the same ratio as the bayer advanced??? or much stronger?

and ill edit to second marks question. unless you have a great aim, you going to kill everything with hort oils right?

what do you mean affected leaves? by the leafminers?  they shouldn't fall of the tree that easily, maybe you have something else going on with it

im curious myself, whats the concentration, application and ratio differences between commercial and bayer advanced?  I apply it as late as I can and a little heavy, it lasts most of the growing season for me. even my mileage varies per tree though.

no gunnar this was a seed she planted, its either a Satsuma as she says, or a hybrid, or mixed up seeds...millet from what I remember, hadn't gotten any in a few years, these are tart enough to pucker you up, but had an underlying sweetness to them. I wouldn't call them off tasting, im the only one I know who likes them, but im weird like that...ill be going home in a week, and getting all I can from the tree, that's why im curious what it really is.

is it possible soil or other conditions are throwing off the flavor of a known fruit that badly???

Citrus General Discussion / rangpur lime
« on: December 20, 2014, 04:07:59 PM »
im curious if anyone has ever grown or tasted a rangpur lime or anything in its family.  id like detailed flavor, growth, and any other info or good pics you got. I cant find any good info online, it seems my goto citrus page for descriptions isn't online anymore...

the reason I ask, Is because my mom has a tree back home, that I always loved the fruit from, though its as sour as you can imagine.  she always called it a Satsuma she says she planted a satsuma, though after comparing fruit and trees I always figured it to be a tangerine...my sunburst tangerine was the closest thing ive found to it, and its not near tart enough to compare.  last week I found the rangpur lime by accident online and now im wondering if it isn't some naturally growing hybrid my mom planted by accident.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: random leaf drop in orchard
« on: December 15, 2014, 06:29:43 PM »
yes we working on the grass problems. they were considering mulch, but im hoping it don't happen.  in 4 years they've never been fertilized.  but looking at the upside down orchard pic, some trees are doing fairly well considering that fact.  certainly not as well as mine at home that have been well fertilized, but they surviving...I cant believe the soil is that different in so many places to allow drought and nutrient problems...maybe I need to start digging, see whats going on under there.

that was my first thought, summer was fairly dry I guess,  but im just not sure.  its like every other or every third tree, different species, it really seems too random to me to be drought...of course the same could be said of any other maladies, so who knows.   if it is, I don't have much way to get irrigation to the trees, these guys weren't too smart 4 years ago when they planted them. but after 4 years even trees that hadn't grown much should have enough roots to find water.  the water table around here isn't very deep.

but to answer my main original question, how long should it take to show freeze damage to limbs of a tree?

you cant ship a pineapple to Louisiana? seriously? I know citrus is under quarantine but that's a bit much..
