Alex Silber has a good instructional video showing how to prune cherimoya on YouTube. He states on the video that heavy pruning stimulates 3 times as many flowers. I have a 15 year old fino de jete that I need to cut way back this spring.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / " White Sugar " variety of sugar apple
« on: February 27, 2018, 08:19:16 AM »
    Good morning group

I was looking over the plant list for papaya tree nursery and Alex has a sugar apple variety called " White Sugar " listed. I did a forum search but it turned up nothing. Does anyone in the group have any experience growing this tree ? I'm curious and considering buying one but would like to know more about it first.

I have 2 soursop trees and a cashew tree in pots in front of a south facing window in my den. They all 3 do really well there and continue to push new growth throughout the winter. When they need water I take them outside to water them. I do have to keep a close eye for spider mite though as it seems that they can be susceptable to them inside.

Thank you for sharing this creamhart seedling story. It sounds like it is worthy of propagation based on your description of the fruit irreguardless whether it’s the real one or not . In my opinion it needs to be propagated and made available with clear discription that it is believed to be a seedling of a creamhart, then let the patron decide if he wants to buy it . I had a couple of Stearns planted . Had them a number of years but they never set and held any fruit. I  eventually lost the trees after some really hot heat wave . If you ever have any of your creamhart F1  grafted trees that you want to sell , I’d be interested in purchasing one.  But one question still bothers me , I’m sure that Orton being a Nurseryman must have sold lots of creamhart trees ? Not one in existence in so cal ?  Same with the tertoh avocado ? All those groves over so cal and no ones knows of a tree tucked in a grove somewhere ?  I just find it hard to believe that there’s not one tree somewhere out there .

    Thanks Jack,

They have the variety listed yes but no showing of a planting location within south coast field station. If my memory serves me correctly I remember asking Julie Frink during my time searching if she knew of a source for budwood for it and she didn’t.  I’m more or less asking if anyone knows of a single tree in a old neighborhood still growing that is a result of trees grafted and distributed from the first shipments of budwood.  Another one that seems to be non existing anymore is the Creamhart.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Tertoh Avocado

Reading the post about the Corona avocado earlier , reminded me about the tertoh avocado which I had read about quite a few years ago. It was a introduction of a 3 pound giant from the property of Mr. Castillas from Guatemala, by Wilson Popenoe. Don't know why it never really caught on as it was said to have excellent flesh , small seed , and of course lots of meat. Once while having a phone conversation with Jim Nietzel I brought up this avocado to him and he said that he actually thought that he came across fruit of this type at a exibit at the San Diego fair. I tried tracking down some budwood and found that there appeared to not be a source in california . Florida did have it listed in a germ plasm , But when I finally made contact with someone about ordering budwood I was told that the tree in their collection had sun blotch virus. I am writing this more as a curiousity to see if any readers might have heard of or even better might know of a tree to source budwood from.

Thanks for clearing it up. I also have some red sugar apples but their too small to fruit. Richard who posts sometimes on this site gave me some really good advice regarding potting up sugar apples ect so this spring everything is going up in pot size and being put on drip system.

That looks like a 7 gallon Kampong Mauve ? Is that correct ? I have a kampong mauve in a 7 gallon squat that gave me 1 fruit during thanksgiving weekend. It set probably half a dozen fruit but over time all but 1 fell off, I'm guessing because the tree is young. I have since assembled a few greenhouses to provide a more humid environment for my annoas. That was my first time trying a sugar apple .  It was good but I think cherimoya beats it hands down. Still waiting to try ilamas and reticulata.

I bought a banana tree from a guy in Fullerton . He called it Chuoi Su  and it wasn't very tall . Less than 10 feet with a bunch of fruit. I was impressed by the size of the plant and the bunch size so I bought a tree from him .

    Hi Group

I have a few achachairu seedlings started a few months ago and now a couple of the seedlings are getting a second shoot coming up . Is this normal ? This is my first experience trying to grow these so i'm not sure what to expect .

Your best option might be to contact Julie Frink of the CRFG.   She has been able to get budwood from some of these older varieties in the past.

Maybe you could take a limb from your tree that blooms and graft it onto your other tree.

Yes i'm thinking that the tree must need to reach a certain size / age before being able to hold fruit ? I tried once to hand pollinate a few of the flowers but still nothing. I guess at this point I just need more patience. I used osmocote plus as a fertilizer on it with good results but I may add a second type with a higher phosphorus amount to stimulate more flowering next spring. Also have a couple of Tikal and a Silas Woods as well.

I have a alano in a squat 15 gallon that has a trunk about as large as yours. After seeing your pic I see the need to pug it to cause it to become more bushy. Does yours hold any fruit yet ? Mine flowers off and on all year but hasn’t held anything yet. I suspect that the tree is still too young. How old is your tree ?

Just to answer your question , I ordered some from a seller on this forum who lives in Costa Rica. Several of the seeds were germinating in the packing material. I now have 5 or 6  young seedlings growing in a seed tray with a humidity dome, growing in the window sill.
