I have wood post rotting issues in my yard as well, so I built these from 4" and 1 1/2" ABS pipe. Cross drilled with a 1 1/2" conduit hole saw and cut down a 1 1/2" PVC cross to fit inside for added support. Very sturdy and should last a long time.

I like the concrete supports, and thought about making my own but decided instead to try making them out of ABS pipe. Wood only lasts 4-5 years in my yard before rotting out or getting eaten by termites so that was out. I drew up a few designs, and settled on this one - 4" ABS main support with 1 1/2" top supports. In order for it to handle the weight (eventually) I cross drilled the top with a 1 1/2" conduit hole cutter and trimmed down a PVC cross to fit. Everything glued together perfectly and appears quite strong. I wrapped the main post in four wraps of burlap using self tapping screws. I'll be wrapping the top supports also to protect it from UV damage.
I got these cuttings from Simon a year and a half ago, and they have barely grown since - they really did not like the shaded sandy location they were in and needed a move. Time will tell and we shall see...

This is my go-to place to get wrapping foils for when I chocolate coat macadamia nuts from my trees. I can get foil at half the cost of Amazon - have not made a comparison, but I'd bet the same might be true for the organza bags also...

So I want to plant a banana but i'm unsure of a really good variety to look for. It will be growing on the mesa in clairemont San Diego - any recommendations on variety and where to get it?

Yes - tagging this because I want to know also! I have a selected spot where I want to plant a banana, but have not acquired one yet. If banana tea tastes any good, regardless if it has health benefits - post up a recipe!

When I eventually get my dragon fruit producing I plan to dehydrate the skins to use as tea also. I read it has a lot of antioxidants and tastes really good to boot...

Due to room limitations I'm going to leave persimmons to my brother. My dad had a huge cherimoya (40-50 footer) in our backyard years ago. He eventually cut it down because it produced an over abundance of fruit (we were all sick of it). He went on to play with bananas in that spot in later years, growing several very tasty varieties...

Thank You Ricshaw - I finally got to page 74 (I think it was) of the DF thread and saw your post on the festival held this year.

Looks like August 2017 will be a busy month for me, between these pitahaya festivals and the CRFG festival of fruit...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dragon Fruit Festival?
« on: December 13, 2016, 01:55:14 PM »
So, it seems I've caught some kind of Dragon Fruit bug, and I'm collecting and planting them out all over my property. Being a Noob I've been reading the 75+ pages of the DF thread start to finish and every other link provided. Looks like there was a ton of activity in 2014 with Dragon Fruit tasting festivals and tours going on, then nothing. Is someone still organizing these things in August, and I'm just missing it - or has the business gotten too big to care about the home growers?

Simon -

Here is a picture from today of my Tebow I got from Ong Nursery 4-5 years ago. Just in the past week it has been putting out good growth. It's maybe doubled in size since it was planted, so it's a pretty slow grower.  Had two nice large mangos last year, so hopefully I'll get a few more next year.

Hey Everyone,
I Just found out about this forum thru Simon_Grow as we were talking about Mango's and my Tebow being hit and miss on growth. I'm hoping to learn grafting from him and improve what I have in the garden.
To date I've been mostly growing the usual standard and heritage veggies with a few not-so-common varieties like rat tail radish, pineapple and goji berries thrown in. My big claim to fame in the neighborhood has been my four Macadamia nut trees, which I harvest every fall, roast and make chocolate coated macadamias for everybody at Christmas. By the look of the trees right now, I'm going to need more than the 18 pounds of chocolate I used last year...
