Tropical Fruit Discussion / Moved to Tallahassee
« on: July 30, 2017, 09:29:35 AM »
I recently moved to Tallahassee and want to get an idea of what I can grow up here with/without protection. I plan to get a greenhouse eventually, but so far I have planted grumichama and cherry of the rio grande. I also plan to give Florida hass, guabiju, psidium spp., jaboticaba, passiflora nitida, and some banana varieties a chance. Any feedback on those choices or recommendations for additional plants that are possible?

I know i can grow persimmons, citrus, peaches, apples, pears and blueberries which I will also start growing at some point.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Broadleaf Papaya Seeds
« on: February 18, 2017, 04:10:17 PM »
I haven't seen these on the forum in a while and I am not sure who was originally selling them, but I am harvesting my first fruit today and will have seeds available from now until early spring. I have this tree isolated away from the other papaya I have growing, but unfortunately these are not the ones with the purple petioles.

10 seeds for $15 shipped within CONUS. I would also be interested in making a trade for anything I don't have.

I have White Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa) seeds available for purchase. 10 seeds for $15.00 shipped. I also have the classic red Roselle available in both the waxy and more dry forms... not sure if the are different subspecies, but I will post pics.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fruit Tree ID
« on: July 15, 2016, 10:20:51 PM »

i saw this tree in a neighbor's yard, and i am curious what type of fruit it is. sorry for the crappy pics from my phone camera. i am talking about the one to the right of what looks like a star fruit tree with small round fruit. they kind of look like mamoncillo/ginep, but they're way to small to be bearing fruit.

anyone know?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What should I graft onto my NDM4?
« on: June 29, 2016, 06:01:13 PM »
Does anyone have any suggestions on what varieties I should graft on to my nam doc mai #4 to match its growth habit? some different tasting indian mangoes would be great to create a "taste of india" cocktail tree.

What would you suggest?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fruit stand near Doral
« on: June 29, 2016, 06:40:41 AM »
Does anyone know of a good fruit stand in the Doral area? I am heading to tampa tomorrow, so anything along the way would work too. Looking for mango and lychee specifically.

Thanks!

I am starting to become limited in space for my mango trees so I am looking for suggestions to graft on to the ones I have in the ground. Most importantly, I want to match the growth habit of the tree, but I also want the best of the best that is available in terms of flavor complexity and something that will lengthen the harvesting season.

I currently have the following in the ground (or soon to be):
- Pickering
- NDM#4
- Maha Chanok
- Fruit Punch
- Malika
- Lemon Zest
- Venus

So far, I am interested in adding Sweet Tart and Imam Pasand to the collection.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / polyembryonic cambuca
« on: March 29, 2016, 12:48:55 PM »
I have one polyembryonic cambuca with three trunks... Would it be best to cut the weakest plants or can I keep them together and approach graft when they get bigger? Or can I leave them growing together? I would prefer a smaller tree over time if they will happily grow together.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / How close to the water?
« on: February 19, 2016, 10:15:47 PM »
I have a lake in my backyard and want to plant a jaboticaba as close to the water as possible. How close to the waterline should i plant it? the water goes up and down depending on how much rain we get and has gotten quite high during summer rain events so there is the chance it could get submerged for at least a week or so if that happens... i am near the anclote river for those of you who saw the flooding in west central fl on the news during summer 2015. anyway, looking for words of advice.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / should i let it hold fruit?
« on: December 31, 2015, 11:31:56 AM »
i want to know if i should let my pickering and nam doc mai #4 hold fruit this year. with the temps being higher than normal for my area i am tempted to keep a fruit or two on each, but don't want to stunt the growth for next year. thoughts?

pickering is about 6'x6'

nam doc mai is about 6'x4'

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dwarf Maher Carambola
« on: December 23, 2015, 08:48:43 AM »
Is anyone growing this cv that can comment on the fruit taste compared to other starfruit. Also, what is the growth habit? I picked one up because it is a dwarf and hopefully won't grow to be as big as I have seen some trees get, but I really have no idea. I have seen some people keep starfruit as a small bush, which is what I would like to achieve.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / 2-3 mango trees in one hole
« on: September 29, 2015, 05:48:10 PM »
i have read a few posts about planting multiple mango trees in one hole and was wondering how fruit production and vigor is impacted. i have always been told that the plants will compete with one another until one eventually wins and the other dies. i tried searching the forum, but didn't see anything about the advantages versus disadvantages. i do see a few members are doing it though. i just wonder why they would plant them together versus multigrafting a single tree.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Sick avocado
« on: June 08, 2015, 08:10:49 PM »
Can anyone take a look at my poncho avocado and recommend a course of action? I think I fried it initially with too much fertilizer, but now it seems to be rotting in different areas. the branches were also spindly for a while, but then the new growth that sprouted was fatter for some reason. one of the new branches that sprouted off the trunk seems healthy, and there are new leaves sprouting in different areas. should I trim it back or leave it be?

it has rained quite a bit the last couple of weeks, but the mix has a lot of perlite and my FL hass avocado seems to be fine. it is planted in the ground though. any thoughts?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Using Lake Water for Irrigation
« on: April 26, 2015, 03:38:35 PM »
Does anyone do this and if so do the risks outweigh the benefit? My neighbor uses a pump to water all of his plants (mostly palms and bananas) and they look great; but most of my plants are edible and the fruits would be given to my son who is still very young. There is a large stand of cypress in the middle of the lake that may filter out some of the pollutants, but I was wondering what everyone's thoughts are on the topic. Would this be any less safe than using well water?
