Tropical Fruit Discussion / My Carambola tree is Dying, help?
« on: January 15, 2015, 04:02:45 PM »
I should have posted months ago. My Carambola tree has been in the ground about 3 years and has been a champ. very green, fast growing, healthy, and productive.....Until 4-5 months ago. Leaves started yellowing, little flowering, and no growth. Then I began noticing little black dots all over the branches, almost like warts.....like a jaboticaba appearance....i used my hand to take some off and they felt almost like dried ants (whatever that feels like). My tree was all green and now it seems this thing/disease has taken over and i have lost 80 percent of the leaves/branches and is working its way up. I have no idea what this is or what to do to save the tree. I havent done anything differently. Please help........

I would like to purchase some trees that I can grow and keep in containers in front of my office. I have no problem putting them in larger containers as they grow but does anybody have recommendations for reliable sturdy production? I was thinking of carambola, but my mind went blank after that. What can I grow in a container that can fruit heavily and consistently??

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Question for the Atemoya Experts
« on: January 07, 2014, 09:27:43 AM »
About two years ago I purchased Gefner Atemoya  from Excalibur. It was in a 3 gallon pot and had a small fruit on it which ultimately split due to the rains. It's been planted in my mom's yard ever since and had a decent amount of flowers last year but no fruit set. I was told that this is self pollinating. Can anybody chime in on this? It's actually planted at my mothers house and i'm only there a couple of times a month. I want to know if I will ever get Fruit without doing anything or will I need to pollinate it by hand (which I have no clue how to do)?

Thanks!

I was using Excalibur's 8-3-9 Fertilizer and am all out. I won't be in that area for some time & know nothing about Fertilizers. Can anybody recommend a good Fert that I can purchase in South Florida? Thanks!!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Growing Guavas
« on: May 12, 2013, 04:14:58 PM »
Somebody gave me a small guava seedling a few months ago, I replanted into a bigger pot and have been taking care of it ever since. It barely grows. I don't know anything about guavas, do seedlings turn out good? Or should I just let this be.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Good news for Mango Lovers....
« on: March 20, 2013, 08:03:11 AM »
Last night a friend of mine was telling me how her mother has 3 mango trees behind her house. I asked her what they do with an over abundance of fruits. She told me they freeze the Entire mango whole and then eat it when they are ready. She said it tastes like sorbet. Here's the kicker: she consumes flesh AND eats the skin. I had no idea this was edible. Anyways I did some googling and here is what I found: http://www.futurity.org/health-medicine/mango-skin-may-help-fight-flab/

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Freezing Tropical Fruits
« on: February 07, 2013, 09:01:58 PM »
Last summer, I had so many mangoes, I began cutting them up, putting them in a Ziploc bag and freezing them. When I went to eat them later, they were very mushy. I just bought a bag of frozen mangoes from my local whole foods, and they were very well textured, firm, and not mushy at all. I love using frozen fruits on a hot day. What mangoes, are good to cut up and freeze which will hold their texture? What other fruits are good? I know lychees work well, but many probably do not, such as black sapote, starfruit, atemoya, citrus, passion fruit.....suggestions?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Super sizing your fruits
« on: January 09, 2013, 09:56:22 PM »
Does anybody have an opinion or information on the rock dust? I have heard that by adding rock dust and certain minerals to your soil, it can really enlarge your crop? Specifically I've heard this with vegetables, but does anybody know it to be true with fruit trees? Also, where can you get this?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Ideas for Fruit Trees in crappy Soil?
« on: January 04, 2013, 05:23:43 PM »
There is an area in front of my office that is about 12 feet by 14 feet with small bushes that surround it and nothing in the center. Years ago i was going to make a deck with patio furniture. Now, I was thinking I could plant a couple low maintenance fruit trees. The soil is CRAPPY (very sandy, lots of odd stuff) and im not sure how deep it goes since the area outside of this is all pavement. Any ideas of trees to plant that will tolerate this average/below average soil which will produce fruit quickly and wont have huge roots? I was thinking Papaya and then drew a blank.....

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What type of Jackfruit flower is this?
« on: December 20, 2012, 07:25:32 PM »
I have a Mai-3 Jackfruit which I purchased and planted in March from Excalibur. It came in a 25 Gallon Pot and looking back I think it was pretty rootbound. I have been taking good care of it and just saw a few flowers. Not sure if they are Male or Female, and how to tell? Any input? Would love some Fruit :)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Low Maintenance Tropical Fruit Trees?
« on: October 15, 2012, 06:00:24 PM »
I'm looking to add a few trees to plant behind my Mother's House (Miami-Dade), and would like some suggestions for trees that can get growing with little to no maintenance. I highly doubt that she will attend to them so Im basically planting and thats it. Specifically trees that require little watering.... I already have a few mangoes, carambola, lychee, atemoya. Thanls

I have 6 young fruit trees planted (Mango (2), Lychee, Jackfruit, Carambola, Atemoya) that have all been in the ground 3-5 months. They are all mulched as well. When I add fertilizer, should I disperse inside the mulch (in the dirt), outside, or all over and on top of the mulch? I'm concerned it wont penetrate the heavy mulch. Also, I bought a couple of bags of Organic Compost and I wanted to know where to distribute this as well. I have read NOT to cover the crown roots, so that leaves me confused if I should just add compost soil on top of the soil there is now?

Any help appreciated!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Honey Jack?
« on: August 13, 2012, 01:37:49 PM »
A friend of mine brought me an interesting book the other day, entitled, "1001 things you must eat" or something like that. There was an entire section on Fruits, and specifically I read about the "Honey Jack". It was described as being the best Jackfruit all around. Has anybody heard of this? Is their another name? Living in South Florida, I am very curious about this..

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Longest season for tropical fruits?
« on: August 03, 2012, 08:28:29 PM »
To all the experts out there, I'm looking at adding another tree to my yard. I already have mangoes and lychee, and starfruit.. Aside from papaya and coconut which I hear are year-round, what other fruits have a long or extended fruiting season, not just of the summer that you guys would recommend? I would like to add something that I can pick fruit from close to year round.....I live in Miami Florida.... thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mulching Fruit Trees
« on: July 27, 2012, 05:00:55 PM »
I have been using Cypress Mulch on my newly planted fruit trees (in the ground 3-4 months). Is their a limit on how much I should use? Is more better?

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Where to buy Exotic Fruit?
« on: July 22, 2012, 08:45:01 AM »
All of my trees are very young and not bearing. I want to buy some sugar apple, Longan, and rare varieties of mango. Where in South Florida can I buy these? I don't want to drive to Homestead because it's too far. Anybody growing these and willing to sell them?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / I want YOUR Opinion of Mango Varieties
« on: July 05, 2012, 06:43:44 PM »
So it is very obvious most people on this Forum LOVE Mangoes. I unfortunately am not in the "Love" Boat Category (let the beatings begin! lol). I havent tasted many mangoes, so I am a bit green. One thing I think would get me more involved is texture. Can anybody recommend a local Mango (grown in South Fla) that is Not Mushy, but has a firmer texture with a bite? I think I would enjoy this more... Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Jackfruit tree Question
« on: June 29, 2012, 08:18:20 PM »
My jackfruit tree is growing nice new leaves. There is a lot of dead branches however that are just doing nothing. I saw Richard Campbell's video that said jackfruit trees should only be pruned in the fall. Does this apply to deadwood and branches also? Should I leave the dead stuff on the tree or can I prune all the dead branches etc.?

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Lychees in South Florida
« on: June 22, 2012, 08:38:32 PM »
Does anybody know where I can purchase lychees in South Florida at a decent price? The asian market I bought from last month doesn't have anymore and the one I checked yesterday had fruit that was green.

Has anybody heard of this? I was told it was one of the varieties being sold down in Homestead....

This Mai-3 Jackfruit Tree was purchased in a 25 Gallon container at Excalibur 2 months ago, and has been in the ground ever since. It gets a Ton of Sunlight, is watered regularly (including the recent Drenching Rain in South Florida), and 2 weeks ago I fertilized it for the first time. Over the past 5-6 days, leaves have been turning yellow-orange and dropping fast. The leaves do get some black on them. Literally in the last 24 hours, 12-15 Green Leaves turned yellow with black around the edges and are dropping. It's happening at an alarming pace. What is this and what do I do?

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Lychees in South Florida
« on: May 20, 2012, 09:48:31 PM »
I have already heard many times that lychees are few and far between for sale in South Florida this summer. Does anybody know where I can buy Mexican lychees? I've already contacted one S. Florida grower who quoted me at $8-$10 a pound. I'm not willing to pay that much for lychees so I figured Mexican would be reAsonable... Any suggestions?

I would like to add some fertilizer to my newly planted fruit Trees. I have read the 839 combo is best. Where can I buy yhis? Home Depot? Or do I have to find a Nursery nearby?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Young Carambola Trees
« on: May 03, 2012, 09:22:28 PM »
About six weeks ago I planted a young carambola tree in my backyard. I believe it was a 7 gallon container. The last couple weeks it has been growing profusely. There were even some baby flowers on it. It's growing taller by the day and growing new leaves all the time but the trunk is very very thin. Should I Prune the tree? Is there anything that needs to be done to get it to Grow thicker? The tree is being held up by a bamboo stick and if I remove it it will flop to the ground.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lychee Season?
« on: April 19, 2012, 08:44:14 PM »
I have a lychee tree that is too young to bear fruit. I was looking forward to this season in South Florida but I hear it's going to be dismal at best. I heard that Mexico grows lychees and their season starts before ours does. anybody know if Mexican lychees are sold in this area?
