Tropical Fruit Discussion / Container Mango Flower panicle question.
« on: April 24, 2020, 11:51:54 AM »
I'm growing a Mango tree for the first time and have a question regarding the flowers.

I noticed that some parts of the flower panicle are turning black. Do I need to be concerned about it?

Do I need to apply anything to give it the best chance of producing a fruit? I'll be happy with a single.

This is a Pickering and I moved it out of the garage about 10 days ago. Been in the garage since late October.

Thank you in advance.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Large Fruited Strawberry Guava
« on: April 19, 2020, 09:13:01 AM »
Is anyone growing the following guava sold by Tradewinds Fruit. I am growing 2nd year plants and was curious if anyone has fruited these and can comment on them.

Psidium sp. - Red Guava

http://www.tradewindsfruit.com/psidium-sp.-red-guava-seeds

Here is their description:

"An unknown Psidium sp. bearing dark red fruits somewhat like the strawberry guava. The fruits are larger than the regular strawberry guava, reaching up to golf-ball size and slightly bigger. The pulp is white/translucent with a pleasant, sweet, strawberry-guava flavor. May be a separate species or more likely a variant of the regular strawberry guava. Medium sized tree grows to 15-25ft, hardy into the mid 20's (F). #977"

Here is another thread with pictures of the plant;

In the northern hemisphere?

I am growing one in a container that will need to come in the garage in November to stay there till April.

If they only flower/fruit in the fall and ripen over winter in the garage the fruit quality will not be good.

Thanks in advance.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Container Cherimoya pruning question
« on: June 02, 2019, 10:37:28 PM »
This container grown Cherimoya is about 4yrs old. Its grafted with several Dr. White scion.

I plan to keep it in a container indefinitely as I cannot grow it outside in my climate. It stays in my garage for about 5 months out of the year.

My question is concerning pruning the 3 branches indicated. Last year when I pruned it, it did not branch out as expected. It just halted growth. In late winter when I pruned it, it put out shoots just below the cut without difficulty.

Is this how Cherimoya's respond to pruning this time of the year? Should I prune about a foot now and then prune again shorter in late winter?(Currently it stands about 6ft tall from the bottom of the container)

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango grafting question - See pic
« on: March 24, 2019, 07:52:27 AM »
Hi All, need your opinion on grafting a branch of a Pickering mango onto a seedling.

I would like to graft it low(Option1) as I plan to keep it in a pot indefinitely, however, the scion thickness
does not match. What type of graft could I do at level Option1 that would have a high success rate? I have grafting experience but not with mango.

I could always do a wedge graft at level Option2 but rather not go that high. Thank you in advance.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Rooting purple mombin cuttings question
« on: February 17, 2018, 11:47:36 AM »
I am trying to root cuttings and currently there is growth that appears to be flower buds.

The question is are those flower buds or leaf buds? If they are flower buds should I remove them?

They have been in the rooting medium about 5 weeks.

Thanks!

I am growing one in a container from seeds I got from Adam.

I have several questions on them.

1. Does anyone else grow these in a container and able to fruit?

2. How long before it fruits?

3. Are there cultivars or selected trees that have superior tasting fruit or large fruit etc?

I kept 3 plants and was able to easily graft branches from each other.

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Garage ripened container Gefner
« on: December 19, 2015, 07:42:44 PM »
My container Gefner survived the winter of 2014/15 in the garage. In early June I pollinated several flowers which resulted in one fruit.

The average first freeze date in my area is around Nov 15 so I moved the Gefner into the unheated garage with the unripe fruit around Nov 10. I provided some light for  a couple of weeks and then discontinued it.

Well yesterday, after being in the garage for well over a month,  I noticed the fruit had fallen. Today I cut it open and ate it and to my surprise it was sweet and delicious! (while not a fair comparison it was much better than a $10 Cherimoya I bought at the store.)

I had thought of getting rid of it as it is very vigorous and wanting to grow large but now I think I will keep it.

Do you have any tips on keeping it small in a container and getting a few fruit every year? I pruned it last year and know how to do that.
What I am interested in is does the location of the flower affect chances of ripening early?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is Cherimoya a good heat tolerant rootstock?
« on: August 23, 2015, 07:43:33 AM »
I am growing some Cherimoya seedlings from a California grown fruit.

I plan to graft Sugar apple and Atemoya on to some of these.

I am growing these seedlings under a fig tree now as they tended to burn in full sun once the heat kicked in.

My Gefner Atemoya and Sugar apple seem to handle the heat fine. The Gefner better than the Sugar apple.

The question is would these seedlings do ok as a rootstock as far as heat tolerance?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is this container Sugar Apple ripening?
« on: August 15, 2015, 10:13:49 AM »
This second year Sugar Apple is growing in a 3 gallon or so container.

I see small cracks forming between the sections. Is this an indication that it is ripening? (or something else. Its been hot here - around 100F for the last 2 weeks)
The fruit is a little larger than a golf ball and feels fairly firm. I pollinated this one in May.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pruning Guava Tree
« on: April 29, 2015, 10:45:08 PM »
I have a white Thai/Vietnamese type guava growing in a 15 inch container.  I over winter this tree in the garage.
In March a pruned some branches to keep it from getting too tall. Now each of those pruned branches are sending out multiple shoots.
Should I trim these to a maximum of say 3 shoots per branch? Otherwise the tree would get crowded with multiple branches.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What is this pest on my Guava trees?
« on: April 19, 2015, 01:39:21 PM »
I grow tropical Guava in containers.

I have had this pest on them for a while. They are soft and can be rubbed off easily. What is this pest?

I also use the following which sprays a fine jet of water to dislodge them.

Thanks in advance.
