General Information:

African fan palm is a robust to massive, single-stemmed, evergreen palm with an unbranched stem that can ultimately reach 20 - 30 metres long by 40 - 50cm diameter, swollen at the base to 85cm, and in old age at about 50 years also swollen above the mid-point to about 80cm diameter. The large, fan shaped leaves are up to 4 metres long and 3 metres across, deeply divided into leaflets, and thorny at the base.

A very useful multipurpose tree that is widely utilized for food, medicine and a wide range of commodities. All parts of the tree are used. The fruits are often sold in local markets. The plant is also grown as an ornamental.

The widespread usage of this plant, especially eating the bud and tapping the sap, has greatly reduced the numbers of these palms in their native habitat.

The plant usually flowers and produces fruit all year round.
The flowering stems are tapped for their sap, a process that starts when the tree is about 30 years old and can continue for another 30 years if managed carefully. Yields of 2 litres of sap per day can be achieved.

Edible Uses:

Fruit - fresh or dried, slightly sweet, but with a mild turpentine-like flavour. The fruits have a large, fibrous pulp, weighing around 500g each, that smells strongly of turpentine. They are consumed raw or cooked, preferably with rice, eaten as a food supplement and rich in oil. The ripe, fallen fruit are collected, peeled and the juicy pulp is squeezed in water to form a solution which is added to porridge during cooking in order to improve the flavour.

The fruit is 15cm in diameter and is produced in large clusters.

The immature seed contains a sweet juice which can be drunk like coconut water. As it matures, it solidifies becoming jelly-like and eventually solid. It can be eaten at all stages, the flavour gradually becoming more nut-like.

Young seedlings - eaten as a vegetable like asparagus and highly esteemed.

The mature seeds can be buried in pits and allowed to germinate, and the shoots are said to be a delicacy. The tuberous portion of the first juvenile leaves are rich in starch - they make a highly prized vegetable.

Medicinal:

The roots serve for the treatment of stomach parasites, bronchitis, sore throats and asthma, as well as being used for a mouthwash.

The leaves are used for various purposes including for shelter, thatch, making mats and baskets. Young leaves, before unfolding, can be split into strips and woven into thin mats, baskets and other household
objects. Mature leaves are used for thatch.

A fibre obtained from the leaves is used for making nets.

The leaf petioles are used for making furniture, baskets, fences etc.
The fibre extracted from the base of the leaf stalk has valuable qualities of resistance to chemicals, termites and water.
The leafstalk endings can be soaked in water to provide fibres that are used as sponges or filters.

The leaf midribs are used to make brooms, fish traps and nets.

An oil is extracted from the fruit.

Ashes from the male flowers make a good potash.

The dark brown, coarsely fibrous wood is a highly prized timber locally. It is very solid, hard, heavy, very resistant to termites and fungi. It is difficult to saw, plane or sand; splits when nailed. Only the outer part of the stem, between the base and the first swelling, is suitable for use. This layer, which can be 7 - 10cm thick on male trees, but only 4 - 5cm on female trees, is used in carpentry, construction, for telegraph poles, piers, and also for household articles.

Propagation:

The seed does not require pre-treatment and germinated in about 4 weeks. The plant produces a very long taproot, which can be 1 metre long when top growth is only 1cm tall, and so it is best sown in situ.

NOTE: In my shop you can also buy different species of seeds combined to meet the minimum order (For example, Annona 3 seeds, V. doniana 4 seeds, parkia 5 seeds etc, to meet total cost $33 including shipping and phyto certificate).

Sausage tree(Kigelia african) seeds for sale, 1 seed/$1, 20 seeds for $36 including shipping and phyto certificate, 40 seeds for $50 including shipping and phyto certificate.
They grow quite rapidly once planted.  If you are looking to create some windbreak and shade in your garden- this is a great tree to consider.

The sausage tree is a deciduous tree which can grow up to a height of 20 meters. The bark of the tree is grey and smooth, but develops cracks with age. The leaves are elliptic in shape with a length of 10cm when mature.

These leaves occur in threes and are compound with a glossy and leathery, wavy appearance, and are crowded at the ends of the branches. The flowers are red in colour, trumpet-shaped and velvety on the inside. The sausage-like fruit is big with an average of about 60.0cm long and 9.0cm in diameter hanging down the tree on long rope-like peduncles. It is also good for ornamental purposes.

For centuries, the sausage tree has been used as a valuable herbal medicine by a number of traditional healers and African communities. All the parts of the tree (fruits, leaves, bark and roots) are widely used by traditional healers across different African cultures to treat several health conditions. For example, the fruits are used to manage skin conditions like fungal infections, eczema, psoriasis, boils and leprosy. In fact, the sausage tree is widely recognized for its remarkable effectiveness in improving the firmness and elasticity of the skin. In some African cultures, women use the sap from the fruit of the tree for firming the skin around their breasts. The plant is also claimed to have potent wound healing activity and for treatment of skin cancers. The leaves, seeds and fruit pulp are dried, powdered and then applied to treat wounds. The fresh and dried fruits can be boiled with water and given to patients to treat ulcers, sores, syphilis and rheumatism.

Medical plant:

Currently, the tree has possible cosmetic and pharmaceutical topical applications, particularly in the formulation of sun-screen skin lotion and creams, breast firming agents, anti-skin irritant and soothing agent, anti-reddening skin agent, anti-inflammation agents, anti-aging and anti-oxidant agents on the skin. Apart from the skin application, the fruit of the sausage tree has also been used as a purgative against dysentery. A number of herbalists claim that chewing a small amount of unripe fruit has an aphrodisiac effect in men, but caution has to be taken since this may lead to the development of blisters in the mouth.

The stem bark of the sausage tree has been used by traditional healers to treat health complications like hydrocele (elephantiasis of the scrotum) and rheumatic conditions like inflammation, swelling, and pain in the joints or muscles. Traditionally, the stem bark is prepared by boiling with water to make a decoction that is prescribed to patients. The stem bark powder can also be put in hot water to make an infusion to treat stomach disorders in children while an infusion from the roots bark is taken to treat pneumonia. The poultice made from leaves is applied topically to treat backache.

Phytochemical analysis from various studies shows that Kigelia africana is rich in medicinal bioactive compounds like alkaloids, tannins, flavanoids, saponins, phenols, terpenoids and glycosides. These compounds offer health benefits to patients suffering from different disease conditions. In fact the bark of Kigelia africana has anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anti-microbial and anti-cancer properties.
In conclusion, the sausage tree remains one of the most interesting and highly valued medicinal plants in a wide range of communities in Africa, particularly as a potential cosmetic ingredient.

Propagation: seeds do not need any pretreatment, sow them at 3/4" depth with a temperature around 70 - 73 F in standard, good draining potting mix. Germination takes 2 to 4 weeks.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: If your country is strict for import of seed, please let me know the necessary requirements. I am not responsible if your package is seized by the inspection of your country.

The germination of the seeds are assured and tested before sold out, most of the seeds are wild and are currently cultivated, if you need any propagation assistance, do not hesitate to contact me through forum or my WhatsApp number below. I can confirm that the seeds are fresh and viable. But if due to one or two reasons your germination rate is very low contact me for free replacement but on condition that you will pay for shipping and phyto certification only.
