Tropical Fruit Discussion / Spondias fruit question
« on: June 10, 2016, 09:44:10 AM »
It seems that I've had green fruit on a Spondias (ciruela) tree for months not sure if it the yellow or the red and they have shown no sign of ripening. Does anyone know how long it could be before they begin to? I heard that the birds love them and when they do ripen they will not last long on the tree.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Bruce Lee-Fist of Flurry!!!
« on: August 14, 2015, 07:44:12 PM »
Apparently there is a warmer than usual El Niņo brewing in the Pacific. They are naming it Bruce Lee BTW. They say that this means the SE United States will have a colder than usual winter. I have 12 mango trees that are not a year old so this will be their first winter. I also have several avocado, nasberry, and a lychee that are going to experience their first winter too. Last year I planted my first trees and I lost half of them in the winter. I did learn something from that experience and so this year I put my trees in the ground somewhat strategically. I have some other ideas that I'm going to try. I'd like to know what advise does everyone else have about protecting trees from frosty weather and is anyone else worried about El Niņo? Here is a link to the article about Bruce Lee. http://www.foxnews.com/weather/2015/08/14/forecasters-warn-this-winter-el-nino-could-be-historically-strong/?intcmp=hplnws

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Indian Mango Varieties In Florida
« on: August 09, 2015, 10:39:13 PM »
Do you have any suggestions? I would like to add some Indian Mangos to my collection of fruit trees. Currently my only Indian is an Alphonso. It's been in the ground for about 2 months and the only new growth that it produced died back after about a week. I have kind of started avoiding this tree because it (literally) seems to have a dark aura about it. It may be that the negative comments I have read about it in Florida has turned me biased against it. Apart from Mallika which is at the top of my want list, what other varieties have been known to do well in this climate?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What Mango is this?

I bought these at Walmart. The sign on the bin said Ataulfo. The Ataulfos I've seen before are all yellow . These are red and green, no yellow on them. Will they yellow as they ripen or were these just mislabeled? If they aren't Ataulfos what could they be? Are they Tommy Atkins? They aren't very big.
