« on: August 02, 2020, 06:53:07 PM »
We had a fruit tasting on Friday, it went well, about 10 people were in attendance.  Im planning to do another one in a few weeks when more fruits are ready.  Its a bit hard to time these things.  Ill post a date soon.

I only took one photo then people started showing up.  There was a lot more stuff people brought.  We had one yellow watermelon that was ripe.  The orange ones will be ready for next time.

Tentatively planning to have people over to have some fruits and socialize a bit in a couple weeks.

Just bring something to share with the group.

I realize theres a nasty virus going around.  Theres plenty of space and good breeze here to keep people safe. I plan to put out tables distanced from one another and people can distance at their confort level, wear masks if you want to chat etc so we can all stay healthy.

If you would like to join send me a message please.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Yerba mate leaf preparation
« on: June 30, 2020, 07:37:40 PM »
How to do it at home?  I looked into it and it looks liked a pretty long tedious process of drying and curing by commercial growers.  I'm asking about the plant harvesting and drying process, not the actual drink preparation.

How do commercial groves do it?  Pay someone to do it all day?  I wanted to plant more trees but with just 8 or 10 big trees now its consuming a lot of time doing this each evening.

Whoops, this wasnt meant for the sale section.

I've got stewart, bacon and fuerte fruit now.  Hass are probably ready also, just need to sample one first.  Coming soon will be sir prize, pinkerton, hass, sharwil, reed, ardith, lamb.

Depending on the size of the fruit about 8-12 fruits fit in a box.  Some of the bacons are pretty large.  Can mix and match fruit.  You tell me what you want and I will pick fruit everyday for a week and put the type and date on them so they don't all ripen at once.

24$ total with postage inside California (weighed mail)
26$ total with postage outside California  (flat rate box).

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Concrete dragonfruit post
« on: January 13, 2020, 12:09:28 AM »
Just made a form this weekend and poured one.  I will update the thread in a week or 2 when I get the form done for the top supports.

The form is made of plywood and 4x6 lumbers.  Trimmed down slightly to make 5x5 post and a smaller spot on top to set a support onto.  Motor oil was brushed inside the form to keep the concrete from sticking.  I already have a harbor freight cement mixer for doing small jobs here.  Makes a few hundred pounds of mix super easy.

We use crushed recycled concrete 20$ per ton.  Mixed 5:1 with portland cement.  9$ for 95lbs of portland.  Can make posts for around 3$ a piece.  Using old 1" well pipes I had laying around for structural support.  They are stronger than rebar and galvanized.

These are going to be very cheap to make and will last a very long time.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Clover cover crop?
« on: January 06, 2020, 09:26:39 PM »
Anyone use this in their groves?  Im trying to figure out ways to smother out weeds and also provide free nitrogen. This is the patented variety That seems to be best since it only gets 4-6" tall.  Let me know if theres something better in your opinion or if this is a waste of time and money.  Keep in mind this will be in a very hot dry area of CA with sandy soil.  Weeds still grow between trees here and Im looking to have this replace them.  What do you guys and gals think?

Is copper the only thing that controls it or is there something less toxic to use?
