I will soon have ultra-tropical lychee/litchi seeds (no chill hours) and still have mayongchid and maprang wan seeds.

I would like to trade them for kepel, baccaurea, keledang, tampirik, kasai, dabai but other seeds are also welcome if they are new for me.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / lamut sida - madhuca esculenta
« on: March 23, 2015, 05:54:10 AM »

I bought this fruittree today but can't find any info except pictures. The vendor told me it is sweet and that's all i could understand of what he said.

Does anybody know it? Toptropicals also has it on their website but no info about it.

the name is lamut sida  or madhuca esculenta.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / maprang sweet-maprang sour-mayongchid
« on: March 21, 2015, 07:17:59 AM »

Left:      Mayongchid
Middle:  Maprang-wan  (wan = sweet)
Right:    Maprang peeuw (peeuw=sour)  This one looks like a small egg so this might be the ma-prang kai (kai=egg)

I never had ma-prang before because in Bangkok they only sell mayongchid. Now i understand why because mayongchid is much bigger then maprang and also has a higher flesh/seed ratio.

Mayongchid tastes the best, sweet and fresh, more fresh than mango.
Maprang-wan is also sweet.
Maprang-peeuw (kai) is sour...sure not as sour as a lime but more for people who love sour fruit or can't eat much sugar.

I never knew ma-prangs are so small compared to mayongchid, but i learn new things here every day.

I have seeds from all of them if you are interested.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / mayongchid vs mayongchid
« on: March 16, 2015, 08:49:36 AM »

Today i learned something new.

There are 2 kinds of mayongchid. On the left is the local mayongchid and on the right the one from the Royal farms.

The right one is a little bigger and much sweeter but costs double the price.

The left one is not bad but not very sweet and since we all have a sweet tooth here we only need the improved ones from the Royal farm.

The roseapples are also sweet and the mango is a chocanan.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Willughbeia sarawakensis
« on: March 02, 2015, 05:29:49 AM »
I have sprouted seedlings of the willughbeia but i can't find any info about this plant. Yes the Ozzy forum has some info but not much  ;)

Do these vines climb and hold themselves on a rope? Do they make airroots as well?

Can they be pruned or will they start dripping?

Is it possible to grow them in a big pot? If not then how can i keep them small in full soil without overgrowing the whole house?

Will they also fruit in partial shade? I read they can fruit within 2 years, which is great.

Do they need any special soil?

I'm excited to grow this vine! I hope it's worth the effort.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / fruit market florida

Google can't give me nice pictures, what am i doing wrong?

Where are the mango's? Or all other tropical fruit that can grow in Florida?

Why is it that there are not many fruitmarkets or why are they not on the web? There must be much more availlable i guess.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pruning scions
« on: February 17, 2015, 06:24:06 AM »
These mangoscions were pruned about a week after they flushed.

They all made more buds who flushed some weeks later.

Whatever mr mangocourse teaches you, for me it works perfect  ;D
I have many more like this and will continue to prune them young.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / red vietnam dwarf papaya
« on: February 15, 2015, 07:37:42 AM »
http://toptropicals.com/cgi-bin/garden_catalog/cat.cgi?uid=carica_papaya

New hybrid of Papaya. It has very large 10-12" oval fruit, up to 7 lbs, it is very sweet and juicy! The most delicious variety we ever tasted. The tree is dwarf, up to 6-7 ft tall.
Self pollinating. The delicious fruit of the papaya is good for you as a dessert or as a digestive aid (it contains the enzyme papain, which is essential to digestion)

I think this is the same papaya which is sold under the name "papaya Holland" all over thailand.

Did anybody taste this one? How was it?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / ma-prang flowers
« on: January 13, 2015, 06:46:16 AM »
Some weeks ago i bought a ma-prang wan tree. It was hard to find because all sellers told me maprang won't fruit in BKK and tried to sell me a mahyong-chid instead.

Today it had it's first flowers.  ;D

The tree is about a metre tall, is this normal or am i just lucky? It is around 20 celcius at night since a few days which is very cold for us. The tree gets sun untill 1 pm.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Patented fruit variety's
« on: December 25, 2014, 11:28:20 PM »
Is there an online list somewhere where we can read which fruit is patented and untill when?

I just bought Summer Snow mango but it was labelled "Kawsong #3".

http://web.pthg.gov.tw/en/News_Detail.aspx?s=66747&n=10946&p=
According to this website the Summer Snow mango is  "formally register in National year 97 April".

Does formally registered means it is patented so not allowed to graft untill the patent has expired??

Forgive my ignorance but i don't know how it works with patents and i guess many more Asians don't know how it works.

I grafted summer snow on my cocktail mangotree, is that an offence?

Also i read somewhere that for example Mongthong duriantree is not allowed to be exported out of Thailand. No idea if it is registered somewhere or patented in Thailand. Is it possible for a country like Thailand to have laws like that? And if so then is it possible to buy an official Mongthong durian tree somewhere? (I mean one from a nursery who has a license to propagate them by grafting)?

I have never seen any nursery having any certificate for what they are selling here but maybe they keep that in the companysafe?  ::)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / mango rootstock differences
« on: December 20, 2014, 07:54:58 AM »
Did anybody test the same scions on different rootstocks? What were the results?

I can test it myself but maybe somebody allready did it and can give some advice about which rootstocks to use. I want to get offseason blooming tree's, or tree's that bloom all year.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / 12.5 kg fertilizer for 1 kg of durianfruit
« on: December 19, 2014, 04:50:58 AM »
http://www.cropsreview.com/durian.html

A tree with a fruiting potential of 25 fruits each weighing 2 kg or a total of 50 kg needs fertilizer at the rate of 206 kg 46-0-0, 143 kg 14-14-14 and 308 kg 0-0-60 which is increased to 1652 kg, 1142 kg and 2466 kg, respectively, for a tree that produces 200 fruits weighing a total of 400 kg.

I don't know what to say. Will duriantree's not fruit at all if we don't give them this much fertilizer? I need to buy a truck to feed my tree. ;D

This must be written by a Thai, they always make huge mistakes with numbers. That's the only explanation i have for this amount of fertilizer.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Giant mango's
« on: December 15, 2014, 07:30:30 AM »
So we had the mini mango's and this thread is about the giant mango's.

http://www.pohonbuahnursery.com/p/selamat-datang.html

Xin Jing and Red Ivory

Cok Pai Boon and Yuwen

Here are some pics of giant mango's grown in Thailand although Yuwen comes from Taiwan. I also grow a few giant ones now.

Are there also giant mango's elsewhere on the world? ??

Golden Queen, Keo Jay are also giant ones but do they also taste as nice as the normal sized mango's? Anybody tried them yet?

Maryoto is selling the mini mangoseeds but i had never heard of it.

Do those tree's grow mini as well? And how long does it take from seed to fruit? Do they also taste like mango or more like a ma-prang??

There are many different ones. My wife told me her grandma also grew them but since the ndm mango nobody cares for them anymore.

This one looks great too

« on: December 04, 2014, 08:36:13 AM »
If you pm your address i will send a package of free papaya holland seeds.

In Thailand they sell them on every market now because they are sweet. I have original seeds (hybrids i guess) not from a fruit.

This is because 5 december is the birthday of Sinterklaas and also of The King of Thailand.

Offer is valid for 10 days from now so untill 15 december. Then i will buy the seeds and send them.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Your favorit green mango
« on: November 20, 2014, 09:35:50 AM »
What is your favorit green mango? I mean an unripe mango.

https://www.daff.qld.gov.au/plants/fruit-and-vegetables/fruit-and-nuts/mangoes/mango-varieties/green-eating

Here is a whole list of them. I am looking for one that i ate a lot but can't find it anymore and the tree is killed by stemborers.

Today i bought this one: Keaw Lerm Korn (it means the parrot who forgets everything)

This one is nice crispy but still a little bit floury inside. The one i am looking for is also crispy inside and a little more sweet but this one comes close.

I'm just curious which one you guys like the most. Green mango's are great if you have the good one. I eat them pure without sauces or salt/sugar/chili.
