Tropical Fruit Discussion / New cherimoya
« on: January 10, 2020, 11:55:30 PM »
Two years ago, i asked Steve at Exotica Nursery in Vista California for a cherimoya that taste like a sugar apple.  He presented to me a seedlings that is not even a foot tall. After 2 years of growth with lots of TLC, the tree self pollinate and produce a good amount of cherimoya.  The cherimoya are about the size of a small orange and have a thick skin.  The tree is cold tolerant.  I had to pick the fruit early because i had a lot of rats eating my cherimoya.  I let the cherimoya soft on the kitchen cabinet and when it was time to taste the fruit, i was expecting a cherimoya flavor—pineapple/banana/tart.  But it tasted like a chewy sugar apple.  It is a great find and a wonderful tree.  I hope the fruit will get bigger with time.  Below are the pictures of the fruit and the inside.  I have scions if you guys want them.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Atemoya tree from Greenmart nursery
« on: January 20, 2019, 12:04:16 AM »
Last year I purchased this atemoya tree from 99 Ranch Supermarket in San Diego for $60 or $70.  It was from greenmart nursery and the nursery cannot tell me anythingabout it.  They can only tell me it is a Taiwan atemoya.  The leaves looks a little different from my AP and other atemoya.  It is very sweet, chewy, and my wife said it taste like a Vietnamese mang cua.  It lacks the aromatic aromas and complex sweet/sour flavoring of a good cherimoya.  It is very sweet and chewy.  If I let this get softer then it won’t get chewy.  I will give this an 8/10 because it lacks the fragrance and complex flavoring.  Overall, it is excellent and the price is too low for an excellent atemoya.  So if you see more trees at 99 Ranch Supermarket then I highly recommend buying.

« on: September 22, 2018, 11:41:13 PM »
Why do people cover their atemoya and cherimoya with brown bag or newspaper?
Does the extra heat make it sweeter or speed up the aging process?
Or just to protect from frost or direct sun?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / PPC and AP atemoyas as rootstock?
« on: September 02, 2018, 03:39:43 AM »
Have anyone try using PPC and AP as rootstock?  My mature AP works fine last spring and took all of my graft but someone said that AP are poor host and it will reject.

What about PPC?  Please let me know your findings.

Thank Ypu.
