Tropical Fruit Discussion / Whats an ideal grafting tool for avocado ?
« on: January 05, 2020, 03:32:31 PM »
I know there is alot of threads on tools, but im wanting to get away from knives, box cutters etc, im looking for a graft tool ideal for avocado grafts mainly small scions, and perhaps  on occasion for cherry, apple, peach, pear something highly recomended of high quality and for speed and ease of use ?

Im looking for good ideas for high quality made well water submersible pump brands in the 4 to 6 inch wide size, likely powered by power lines not powered by solar panels and also a good internet company to buy 1 from, im likey after at least a 2 horse and can pump at least 20 gallons a minute.

Im no expert on indoor lighting what types give the best bang for the buck is everything going to led type , im using flurisent now but seems like it will be phased out in a few years, im mainly looking for growing avocado trees indoors or in green house to extend daylight hours perhaps and im looking for best type of lighting thats good for fast growth im not after lighting thats suited to make the tree flower.

« on: November 26, 2019, 04:01:18 PM »
Ive recently had some jan boyce scions take and ive never tryed one but some claim the jan boyce avocado is among the best tasting, but my question is for thoses that have tryed growing them in areas that can go under 30 degrees how well did they do without much or even no frost protection? I read on internet they did ok at 22 degrees but i dont know if that was for a large tree or a smaller one.

« on: November 23, 2019, 12:58:31 PM »
Ive never used bottom heat for sprouting avocado seeds but ive heard of it done by others so does it really help speed up sprouting, also is it a better idea to sprout in soil over sprouting in water what are the pros and cons, ive sometimes had fungus attacks sprouting seeds in water even cchanging water every 3 days or so.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Reed Avocado Seeds as Roostock ?
« on: November 22, 2019, 04:12:41 PM »
Who has used Reed avo seeds as rootstock ? Im looking for long term results, like how fast growing, are they able to be grafted onto faster than average seeds? How strong of root system do  they have ? Do they seem resistance to rootrot, and last how do they compare to Zutano or Bacon seeds used as rootstock ? Ive got a few reed seeds sprouted now, appear to grow a very long trunk but still way too small to graft unto yet.

Looking for someone with expertise in micro sprinkler set up for avo trees under 4 foot tall is a 10 gph head best or is it better to use a 15 or 18 flow head in cal hot central valley ? And is there a model most durable/ highest performing im wanting a 360 micro spray pattern.

Looking for Aravapia avocado seeds either whole fruit or just seeds a few hundred would be great, shoot me a price also looking for duke avo seeds and Lula seeds.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / wanted 500 Zutano Avocado Seeds
« on: July 07, 2019, 05:46:32 PM »
Im looking for a very cheap sorce for Zutano Avocado seeds if cheap enough i can use 500 or more, prefer large as i can get, and not needing anytime soon winter 2019 to 2021 is soon enough, other wanted seeds in much smaller numbers are Duke,Aravaipa,Lula,Walden, Reed seeds and will pay more for them.

Its reported by some as Aravaipa tree being able to tolerate 10 f maybe it can and maybe it cant, i heard of no living proof but best i can tell the area where mother tree is it never gets that low and surely never on a regular basis, more likey common winter temps are prob somewhere between 20 to 28 degrees so my advice for anyone thinking they will grow well in 10 degress dont relay on that.I would winter protect any young avocado tree below 32 and not take any risk at least until tree has matured and got several years under its belt. I do think the high summer high temps the tree can likely take are much more reliable but still make sure young tender trees are painted white and prob use a 50 to 70 percent shade cloth depending on where one lives.

Pumice for sale fines up to 1/4 inch in size in bags pure not mixed with anything else its great for health of roots for pots or amending heavy clay soils the cost is 9 dollars per approx 24 pounds worth plus shipping cost, i also have duke, nimlioh, booney doon avocado scions for sale at 10 dollars each plus 7 dollar shipping box in lower 48 states.

I dont know all that much about the Arapaiva Avocado tree, i ve read it can take 10 to 14 degrees of cold and i assume that is a large 30 foot tall tree, someone else wrote it can handle 120 degree days, thus thriving in arizona i guess, i read fruit  size and taste is like quality of hass but with a smaller seed. Sounds like the tree is also a fast grower, but can someone share more facts on this variety like does the fruit have good shelf life? does it ship, bruse easy? , how long does fruit need to hang on tree, who has scions or whole small trees for sale, also anyone with a large producing tree can you shed more light or correct the false rumers?

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Growing kiwi's from seeds
« on: May 11, 2019, 02:20:15 PM »
Im growing kiwis from seeds they sprout ok in 100 percent vermiculite but then tend to die off quikly does anyone have a good soil formula that very young kiwi plants do well in, i also tryed coir it doesnt work any better, maybe sand ? Pumice ?

Ive heard dusa rootstock is good for salt tolerance and root rot resistance but is clonal rootstock over hyped ? Someone told me some growers complain about clonal rootstock that the roots are too shallow that they dont have a deep growing tap root like a rootstock grown from a seed has is this true ? Also how hard is it to grow ones own clonal rootstock in a greenhouse? Can a beginer have success ? Or is air layering on a avocado tree a better way to go ?
