Tropical Fruit Discussion / Carambola winter pruning for So Cal?
« on: January 23, 2020, 08:23:34 PM »
How do you prune your starfruit tree in the winter? I was told cutting it all the way back is the best thing to do to promote fruiting?

Hope everyone had a nice holiday. I just received these seeds in the mail today, are they viable? They seem dried out, arrived with what appear to be mold spores on them, and werenít packed in any medium, just a plastic zip lock type baggie with small holes poked into it. However, I have no idea if these seeds require medium or can be shipped dry? Any advice would be greatly appreciated on the condition of these seeds. Thank you.

Hi guys, I just put this Big Jim loquat in the ground a couple days ago and now Iím having second thoughts on the close proximity to the wall. Is it too close to the wall? The other tree in the photo will be removed FYI. I plan on doing high density planting in that area which is why I planted so close to the wall. Iíd like to keep the tree under 10ft. Also, do you guys like growing loquat trees, or bushes? Iíve been pulling off the suckers trying to branch up from the trunk to shape it into a tree. If kept as a tree shape, can you keep it short enough to harvest from for the foreseeable future? Or should I let the suckers grow to have more fruit thatís in reach?

6ft tall Jamaican Strawberry Tree in 7 gallon container for sale. Has fruit hanging on it now. Local pick-up only. $95.

I know thereís some talk about the production of sapodillas in So Cal on this forum, with Alano possibly being the most productive. HOWEVER, Iím looking for info on the TASTIEST variety out of alano, hasya and Silas woods that have been grown in So Cal. I know taste is subjective but If anyone has experience with the taste of these varieties grown in Southern California, and could shed some light, it would be much appreciated! Thanks.

Is this cracking on the trunk normal during mangosteen growth? These trees are about three years old.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Growing Rambutan in Southern California
« on: May 07, 2019, 06:18:26 PM »
This rambutan has been growing from seed, outdoors (under my patio cover and surrounded by other trees) in Southern California, for approx 3+ years, and seems to be quite happy. The fruit was grown in a mountainous region of Costa Rica.

If anyone has experience growing rambutan in Southern Cali, OUTDOORS AND NOT IN A GREEN HOUSE, please share your experiences. I have not found any information on anyone being able to get one to fruit outdoors here. Thanks.
