Tropical Fruit Discussion / UPDATE!!!!! W/ PICS
« on: August 12, 2014, 04:10:56 AM »
My first banana rack from a set of unknown pups I got from a family friend, most likely Williams or bluefield.

My dragon fruit flowers a few months ago, I got two variety's, a large type and a smaller type fruit.

The larger type fruit, must weigh close to two pounds! showing some color a few days ago.

Took this pic today, fruit is really taking on some nice coloring! Any ideas on when its gonna be ready for picking?

Side view of the trellis. I got 4 other fruit that are younger then my almost mature fruit. the two fruit on the far left growing next to each other are the smaller type.

Got one more flower that just opened, I usually pollinate them, but I discovered my larger type is a self pollinator. I tried cross pollinating the two in hopes of getting some kind of hybrid.

Heres a pic of an air layered mango from an unknown tree, I decided to turn it into a cocktail tree, I got three local varieties grafted on.

this graft is a Gouveia Mango, it started budding about 2 weeks after grafting, its showing signs of nice callusing.

This is a R2E2 mango, same as the gouveia, started budding within 2 weeks after grafting, today marks 4 weeks after grafting. The third is a Mapulehu Mango (pic not included) but it has not budded yet, but scion is still green so im keeping my fingers crossed! This is my FIRST attempt at grafting mango and im very happy with results!

That's all for now, ill keep you guys posted on the df and how my grafts are taking... Aloha
ps. click on the pictures to see it better, my mistake for them being small!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Treating Rust?
« on: August 02, 2014, 01:42:48 AM »
I noticed about a week ago some sort of rust colonizing on my mountain apple tree (Malay apple) (syzygium malaccense). The new growth seems to have a broze hue to the top of the leaf. Do you fruit experts know of any possible solution to help this? Mahalo

Tropical Fruit Discussion / When does the pollination stop?
« on: August 01, 2014, 04:57:27 AM »
5 of my dragon fruit flowers opened last night, I usually just hand pollinate them since there are no bees. This morning the flowers were closing already, and out of nowhere some bees appeared and started going into the flowers. Are the flowers still able to be pollinated at this time or is the usual "10 @ night" the only time when the pollination can take place?

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Mango bud wood
« on: July 23, 2014, 07:27:52 AM »
Aloha all you hawaii guys, I am looking for a few scions of the Rapoza and Mapulehu varieties which will be used to do a cocktail style grafted tree. I do have to mention that the bud wood will have to be about the circumference of a pencil/maybe a little larger, since my branches are fairly small. Pm if you have some available. Mahalo ~ Brennan

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Jack fruit and dragon fruit tea
« on: July 21, 2014, 04:55:00 AM »
Went to my local farmers market the other day and picked up a 17 pound jack fruit for about 19 bucks. The jack was perfect ripe. Got home I opened that bad boy up and was delighted by the strong aroma of bananas and pineapple. The flesh was somewhat crunchy and soft (yellow fleshed) and tasted very good. The funny thing was, the after taste was very interesting. I could taste durian very slightly after each bite (I love durian). I wish I knew the cultivar name of that fruit, but I kept seeds and will try growing them. I finished half of the jack by myself in 2 days!!! Haha So about the dragon fruit tea, after I ate some df that I got, I dried out the skins for about 4 days and made a really nice purple tea this evening. To be honest there isn't much taste so I added a nice healthy serving of organic honey (produced on the farm I work on in the big island). I read somewhere when you make a tea, it realizes more antioxidants and vitamins out of the skin? Well not to sure but I'll say it's quite delightful.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Tropical Storm Wally
« on: July 20, 2014, 01:16:12 PM »
Just an update... Maui is getting battered by 65 mph winds and rain that is coming down by the tons. Thunder and lightening can be heard and seen off in the distance. So far non of my trees were hurt. But they are really taking a beating by this wind! Woke up at 6 to stake every tree in the yard including newly planted trees. Keeping my fingers crossed  :-\

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Looking for Garcinia Sp.
« on: July 18, 2014, 03:55:37 AM »
Aloha all you hawaii guys,

I am looking for some trees of the garcinia sp. I've got garcinia mangostana already and I'm looking for any other species. Preferably seedlings that are about 12-36" tall. Please pm me if you have trees available. Mahalo

I've been looking for a grafted black sapote for a long time now here in Hawaii, the only place I know that carry them is Frankies Nursery. The hard part is... They hardly have them on stock and their very expensive (45-60 dollars) for a 3 gallon. I guess I'll just have to add this one to my "Desirable" list  :(

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dragon Fruit may not be a "dragon fruit"
« on: July 09, 2014, 04:39:39 AM »
I have about 10 plants planted on a stand and all are about 2 yrs old. About 2 months ago, the first sign of blooming appeared and I was gifted with about 1 dozen flowers. After I cross pollinated all of them at night, in a few days they would dry up and fall off. And recently more have done the same. So what I am beginning to figure out is if what I planted is actually just the regular night blooming cereus instead of dragon fruit. And to mention one of my other plants gave its first flower which looks more like df flower than my other plant. This plant I know for sure is df because it came from a plant that had fruits when I took cuttings... I got my other plants from my local lowes which were being sold as pink dragon fruit...

I was gonna put together an order with Frankie's over on Oahu. I was gonna order a mamey sapote and possibly a mammee apple. Could anyone tell me how long these trees would take to fruit? Their grafted trees, possibly 3 gallon sized

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Eugenia koolauensis
« on: June 30, 2014, 02:06:09 PM »
After researching for a few hours on different Eugenia species, I came upon this specimen that is noted as one of the very few fruiting shrubs/trees that is endemic to Hawaii. I believe it's also called Nīoi (knee-oi) in Hawaiian. It's is currently on the endangered list and only a handful of plants remain in the high elevation areas of Molokai and Oahu. To be able to get ahold of a plant would be really really cool, but we all know that would be very hard right? Lol  :o

Interesting video of cultivation of rambutan, mangosteen, durian and pulasan. Great video other than the language barrier due to foreign language.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Grafted Rambutan and Pulasan
« on: June 24, 2014, 12:40:47 PM »
Whenever I heard "grafting" rambutan, I would laugh and walk away. But, I was clearly shocked to find out that all of the rambutan here on the farm I work for are all grafted, bud grafted to be exact. My boss explained that the trees would grow better and have a better root system then marcotted trees, which I unferstand. And the trees grow somewhat shorter and more stocky than a marcotted tree. As for the pulasan, examining my grandfathers trees, I noticed a weird marking in the bark, turns out these pulasans were grafted too! As I remember what Oscar stated in a old post (correct me if I'm wrong) that rambutan and mostly pulasan were hard to graft. These pulasans came from his long time friend master grafter David Frenz. Any input fellas?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / A Very Busy Vacation
« on: June 20, 2014, 01:48:29 AM »
To start my summer vacation, I visited my family here on the beautiful Big Island here in Hawaii. I got a job working on my Uncle Charles Ensey's farm "Hawaiian Sunshine Farms". the specialize in lychee, mangosteen, longan, rambutan, durian, and macadamia nuts. I work on over 1000 acres of fruit trees and I love it. They are the largest mangosteen farm in Hawaii and possibly the united states. Their mangosteen are inter planted with lychee and longan. Working everyday, I journey to new sections of the farm, discovering all kinds of different fruits. Mamey sapotes, canistel, durians, and jack fruits are all planted as wind breaks in between the sections of trees, the mamey sapotes trees were the biggest I ever seen, trees easily towered 75 feet and the fruit weighed at least 3 to 4 pounds. Last week I went to the Maku'u Market to buy some plants, I came home with some black sapotes, mamey, and a rollinia and cacao tree. The Mangosteens are still producing and are very delicious. I have been taking pictures of the stuff that comes from the farm to share with all of you! Enclosed is a picture of a yellow fruit that I found growing in the farm, the tree looked like a species of garcinia, can anyone tell me what this fruit is? I will keep you guys posted with more pictures. Aloha

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Plants dying while on vacation!!!
« on: June 16, 2014, 11:36:19 PM »
So ever since my vacation started, my father has been calling me to tell me what the news is of my fruit trees. Apparently my 4 foot tall mangosteen has dried up and died out of nowhere, a few seedling jackfruits have died, a Chico sapodilla seedling that was about 3 ft talk suddenly wilted..... This makes me sad  :'(
So.... What are some of your trees in Your collection that died on you while on a vacation?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Durian experience for the first time
« on: June 01, 2014, 02:48:34 AM »
So I arrived on the big island to visit family for a month. Mangosteens are getting ripe and lychee is almost done. But the durian trees were loaded from head to toe and getting ripe. I picked a fruit that was about the size of a volleyball and was very ripe (had pungent odor). Just cut it open tonight and was really amazed at the smell of this fruit. Reminds me much like "stink feet" haha. The odor really turns you off in the beginning but once I tasted it, I was in auwe. The tast reminded me of a sweet garlic, it's was actually to strong of a taste for me to handle but it was that bad as how I thought it would be. Great first experience to start off my summer vacation!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Wrong information On Youtube Videos
« on: May 28, 2014, 02:14:40 AM »
Just wanted to bring up an issue about wrong information being dispersed on Youtube. I watched a view videos involving black sapote trees. The owners of these trees clearly state that white sapote and black sapote are relatives, when they are nowhere near it right? Black sapotes are relatives of persimmons (diospyros) not white sapotes (Casimiroa edulis). Also a few on lychee. Farmers conclude that lychee takes anywhere from 2-3 years from seed to fruit. I mean, maybe if you added 12 years to those numbers then I would believe you, but  not 2-3 yrs... That's would be every fruit growers dream! lol  Just thought I should share because it really ticked me.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Summer Blooms
« on: May 25, 2014, 03:39:34 AM »

My Apple Banana threw out a huge flower the other day without me even noticing! If all goes well, this bunch will be a good sized bunch.

My dragon fruit flowers this morning...

As of right now, only one opened. The others should open in a few days.

I never realized how fragrant the df flowers were. To me they had a really similar smell to peanut butter or nutella? haha just in my opinion.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mammee Apple?
« on: May 11, 2014, 12:09:06 AM »
Went on a little adventure today to a state park here in Maui. This state park is sectioned off and is made to look like the authentic small villages of the different ehtnicities here in Hawaii. In the Filipino section, next to one of the fake grass hut houses stood this beautiful tree. From the look of it, I already knew it was some sort of fruit, but I wasn't quite sure what kind. Upon looking at the small fruits which had a smell of a slight peach, im wondering if this was Mammee Apple (Mamea Americana) ?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Ice Cream Bean
« on: May 05, 2014, 04:26:16 AM »
I was wondering how long an ice cream bean tree would take to fruit from seed? I know of a person selling trees that are about 3 years old and are very big and lush. Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Im back!!
« on: May 05, 2014, 04:18:14 AM »
hey guys long time no see! Its great to be back on this wonderful forum again. Im sure yall are wondering how have my trees been doing right? Well, my two grafted avos gave flowers this year for the first time. unfortunately only one fruit held due to strong winds here in Maui over the past months. My mangos are doing great and are happy in their 25 gallon containers. Mangosteen put out several flushes of leaves but the tree is still skinny. Pineapples are putting out some nice looking fruit. My mountain apple or malay apple grew about 3 feet tall from the last time I did an update. And I cant forget about my prized possession, an air layer I made on a mango tree that actually caught which is doing quite nicely in a pot. Hopefully, I can post some pictures soon to show you guys my little yet growing treasures! Aloha ~ Brennan
