Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Wanted: Cushman Mango Tree
« on: February 25, 2014, 07:35:57 PM »
CarCarlo, are those grafted trees?
I can't tell from the pics.

I'm leaning towards Rosigold or Edward myself.
My Glenn seems to be very precocious, I will have enough to trade for some of his Duncans..
Keep the ideas coming, I appreciate everyone's opinions!

"Best".
Combine taste, productivity, disease resistance, availability, etc.  There are no wrong answers..
Give me your opinion, your experiences with your trees.
I personally have Carrie, Florigon, PPK, Pickering, Cogshall and Glenn in early/mid mangoes.  Carrie is my earliest mango this year. Pickering dropped all of it's fruit (though it would have been earlier than Carrie).  Cogshall and Glenn are late this year.  Florigon and PPK blanked this year unfortunately.
My buddy has a Duncan already, his usually bears from late June through July here. I was looking to add an earlier mango, on average how early is Edward?
Any Rosigold fans out there?

Hi all, I'm going to be planting an early tree for a friend.  I don't want my bias to cloud the choice.
(I've tasted most of the more common varieties)
Lets define "early" as fruit bearing from March-June.
Zone 10a coastal.
Thanks in advance for your replies...

I went last year, nice show.
I'll be there Sunday, I guarantee I won't leave empty handed..

Melanose?
If so, copper spray in June/July for prevention.
Greasy spot?
Both?

x2 on the VP.
If you could only have one (1)! mango tree, this gets my vote.
Only caveat is the space requirement.

Looks suspicious for spider mites to me...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Heavily fruited Duncan Mango FLA
« on: April 29, 2012, 08:13:23 PM »
My buddy around the corner has a similar sized Duncan, just as nice as above.  Must have 150+ fruits on it now.  This following a similar season last year.
To compare, another buddy next-door has a VP that put out 150+ fruits last year, nothing to speak of this year.
All this from a 15x18 tree, compared to the VP which is 30x20.
I take mangoes to work, where I have worldly mango afficianados (Thai, Phillipino, Jamaican, Haitian, So. Miamian, etc).
The Duncan always gets the "what mango is that?" from all the ex-pats.    Universally loved by folks that eat lots of different mangos, here's a big thumbs up for the Duncan....

I've got a 7 gallon Fl Haas located, anybody seen a Bacon avocado plant for sale in Central/SW Florida?

Thanks guys for all of the replies.  Still undecided though.  Has anybody done the two trees in one hole thing with avocadoes?  I'm getting short on space....
Maybe a type A and a type B that bloom close enough together?  I assume that would be beneficial production-wise to both trees...
Still leaning toward a Mex-type avocado...Bacon and a Haas?

The pine borers got my Choquette, in need of a new avo...
What is the consensus on the "Florida Haas"?  I want to shy away from another Guatemalan type avocado, I have several neighbors with trees that produce huge crops.  According to internet wisdom, the FH was selected from a tree in Fort Myers.  Supposedly a decent Mexican type avocado.  Apparently self-fruitful...  Anybody out there with experience with the above?
Open to suggestions.  I'm located in Englewood, 10a
Thanks

I was going to veneer graft, that way I could potentially get more than one attempt on my rootstock.  Technically speaking, is this the easiest way?

Hi all, as title suggests, I'm in need of all the advice I can get.
I've read/watched most of the stuff on the 'net via google search function.  I now have a grafting knife, parafilm, and grafting tape.  I have 10 seedling subjects for the endeavour (Duncan and VP).  I think I'm ready.
The tree that I want to clone is an old neighborhood mango tree (probably a seedling) that produces some very good fruit.  I understand that the optimal time to obtain budwood is after inflorescence in the spring, I assume first budswell after.
Anything I'm missing?  Tips, etc...?
Thanks in advance for any replies.....
