Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: My Carambola tree is Dying, help?
« on: February 24, 2015, 04:39:23 AM »
This Lobate Scale is serious stuff (for me at least). Nearly took out my Carambola tree. Cut back nearly 80% of branches, sprayed oil, and used imidacloprid. Still some scale on higher branches, too many to remove. Hopefully it recovers. This is no joke , maybe I got it worse than others but nearly took over a normal very healthy tree.

I took your advice and did a few things, I bought that  Imidacloprid And followed the instructions by mixing it with water and pouring it around the trunk and drip line and I also cut off probably 60% of the branches which were totally overtaken by that  scale and there was no foliage whatsoever. There's only a little bit of foliage left at the very top of the tree and I sprayed it with this natural insecticide, and I'm really hoping that the tree bounces back and starts to grow some new branches and foliage without this horrible infestation that is obviously a serious thing

Should I remove all th infested branches,?? That's  a lot of the tree....

Oscar where can I get imacloprid??? I've never had the need to spray anything on my trees as I've never had any problems before....this thing seems new and dangerous...

Yes i would remove all infected branches. Imidacloprid is sold almost in every garden shop. A good place to find it is in Home Depot or Wal Mart. It's manufactured by Bayer. Bottle says something like Fruit Tree Home and Garden Spray, effective for 12 months. You spray it around the base of the tree.

I will go to Home Depot tonight. Should I only spray around the tree?? Not on the tree at all? I dont mind using chemicals right now if it saves the tree....If i cut off ALL the branches that are infested (approximately 75% of the tree), will they grow back?

Har

Thanks for the input, I will definitely try the brush, my concern is that it keeps growing higher in the tree and taking up all the branches in its path. What about Lobate Lac scale????

That's good that you still have the mango tree fruiting. This thing is taking everything out in its path. Before I got these bumps on the branches, the whole tree was extremely green and there was foliage from top all the way to the bottom. As of now, there's only foliage on the top one third of the tree, and it's spatse at best. This foliage used to be so heavy, green, and growing all the time. It's not doing any of that. There's no doubt in my mind, these black spots, or bumps rather, are killing everything in sight.

Thank you for the input so far. It's hard for me to believe that it is a deficiency that would cause this, the tree has been relatively healthy, plus I've always given it good compost, fertilizer, and mulch. It's dead wood underneath these bumps. The only leaves on the tree or at the very top, it appears to me that these bumps are slowly making their way from the bottom of the tree towards the top. In the process, everything is dying. Aside from these bumps, the tree always grew like crazy with new foliage, branches, and flowered. It is basically on life-support in my opinion. Even at the top where there is some foliage, there are little bumps starting to form. All of the lower branches that are overtaken  with bumps are dead. I don't know what to do.....

Tropical Fruit Discussion / My Carambola tree is Dying, help?
« on: January 15, 2015, 04:02:45 PM »
I should have posted months ago. My Carambola tree has been in the ground about 3 years and has been a champ. very green, fast growing, healthy, and productive.....Until 4-5 months ago. Leaves started yellowing, little flowering, and no growth. Then I began noticing little black dots all over the branches, almost like warts.....like a jaboticaba appearance....i used my hand to take some off and they felt almost like dried ants (whatever that feels like). My tree was all green and now it seems this thing/disease has taken over and i have lost 80 percent of the leaves/branches and is working its way up. I have no idea what this is or what to do to save the tree. I havent done anything differently. Please help........

Natalie,
Agreed. All the VP's I have had were worthless so far...

Mallika is not a small mango to grow in a pot.  It will reach heights of 20 - 30 feet with no problems.

Problem with most citrus is either you will need to spray or deal with leaf mi er and other possible pest and fungus issues.

Bananas will require a large pot.

As I initially asked, a lot depends on location, space and intentions/restrictions/limitations.

Jaboticaba is an excellent choice.  Looks very ornamental, will give fruit and will do well in a pot..
Rob: how long will it take to get fruit from a Jaboticaba in    container assuming I start with a 3 or 7 gallon container. It would be in full sun sitting in a sandy area that is contained by concrete about 10 feet by 12 feet...

19
I don't want anything larger than maybe 25-50 gallon...ideally 25.....problem with mangoes is they are seasonal. I would like something that fruits consistently & more than once a year......

20
I would like to purchase some trees that I can grow and keep in containers in front of my office. I have no problem putting them in larger containers as they grow but does anybody have recommendations for reliable sturdy production? I was thinking of carambola, but my mind went blank after that. What can I grow in a container that can fruit heavily and consistently??

I saw a video that shows how to do it. The tree is just starting to throw flowers now. Should I start pollinating now or wait a month till there are more flowers/growth?

My Atemoya tree is beginning to throw out a bunch of flowers and new growth/green leaves. It's definitely large enough to hold fruit and I want it to. What should I do???? It's a Gefner and I thought I didn't need to do anything... :(

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Question for the Atemoya Experts
« on: January 07, 2014, 09:27:43 AM »
About two years ago I purchased Gefner Atemoya  from Excalibur. It was in a 3 gallon pot and had a small fruit on it which ultimately split due to the rains. It's been planted in my mom's yard ever since and had a decent amount of flowers last year but no fruit set. I was told that this is self pollinating. Can anybody chime in on this? It's actually planted at my mothers house and i'm only there a couple of times a month. I want to know if I will ever get Fruit without doing anything or will I need to pollinate it by hand (which I have no clue how to do)?

Thanks!
