Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Best tasting mangos of 2018
« on: October 11, 2018, 11:32:27 PM »
As mango season approaches and end in SoCal I edit my top ten list once again

1.LZ
2. Señorita
3.ST
4.Zinc
5.E4
6.OS
7.Creme brûlée
8.Parson
9.M4
10.HK

Change in the rankings. California mangos are much sweeter than the hundreds of Florida mangos I’ve tried this year, amazing 1.6lb LZ!!

I hav to agree with u.. ur last year cac & lz was way sweeter than the ones in Florida

Hey Mark
This year señorita went up against over 200 Florida mangos and come out on top.
Frank, did you say that this Señorita mango is a variety that came from Hispaniola (Haiti or D.R.)?  How did it come to California?  Is anyone in Florida growing it?  What's the flavor profile?

This was an 7 year old madame francis seedling same profile but sweeter and totally fiberless. Brix range from 25-28 has that nice Caribbean spicy flavor

That sounds tasty.
I wonder how this will do in FL?
Is anyone trying to grow it down here?

Its a very good mango on par with newer zill varieties. As his Senorita matures, flavor will also improve.
I also believe that JF is not releasing this variety to the public but himself. :D

1 year old isan atis from seed. Out of 6 seeds, this was thriving 122f temps & 27 temps. I do wonder of its only me that its growing too slow for me(perhaps lack of humidity)?

For the most part I’m culling the vigorous ones and keeping the runts, I want to try and see if I can take great poly mangos like bolt, sweet tart, orange essence, wester, Pina colada which produce multi shoots and select out the runts. For the most part flavor is already incredible how can one improve any further? ....but I think maybe the angle is to get a great tasting mango in smaller tree. 🤷‍♂️

very nice to see lot of folks on this forum now have great collection of upcoming to be "top tiers" once they fruit. biggest collection of all might be with Mike T @ down under. I have several too, two are about to fruit next year, they bloomed this year in vane.

always tag name of parent seed and keep tags until fruiting, then if superior or different but excellent, then give it a name, spread wood around. otherwise topwork it.
Mr. Zill has taken the mango to a whole different level with his outstanding creations. Backyard growers should follow Leo Manuel’s advice and plant any mango you love and wait a few years for it to fruit. Here in Southern California it doesn’t take 10 years for a seedling to fruit in 3 years you’ll have fruits.

Or u cud also visit JF backyard's to get an idea on how its done.

It was 28 the best mango I’ve had all year... beat E4and creme brûlée

I bet as ur senyorita trees matures, flavor will improve. Wow

I had witnessed this mango. It is huge. Reminds me of venus size.

It is possible that ST is a sport.
Also, last year's senyorita was an awesome mango.

U are doing a good job growing your trees.

Beautiful!!!
Does it get windy there?
How much do you water them? Just looking for estimate answers (no need for GPM, Lol).

Thanks,
Trung

I dont get the hot warm santa ana winds as most those winds stay low in the valley, I do get some. I get high winds from ocean front from west side when its windy. On watering, I have it on deep watering every other day this year. due to heat we got I had no choice but to water.  my monthly water bill is about $230 right now. once we start to cool, I will reduce watering by 50%

Impressive Behl! And its a challenge to grow these & fruits on ur labor the coming years. We might have the same temps here in San Fernando Valley & major difference is I get blazing Santa 'effin Ana Winds at 827 ft elevation.
