Tropical Fruit Discussion / Has anyone tried Cupui cacao?
« on: September 21, 2017, 11:13:46 PM »
I've actually never tasted any raw cacao seeds or pulp before. I've seen there are differences between varieties, so I'm curious. I have a plant, but I want to know everyone's experiences with the variety (Theobroma subincanum) .

Does it produce well? How is the growth? What does it taste like?

Thanks!

Hey! My brother's birthday is in a couple days, and I'd really like to get him some seeds. His dream plant is the ice cream bean, and he also wants to grow cherimoya and some papaya. He doesn't care for the "Mexican" papaya, and prefers the smaller ones (Hawaiian or something similar).

I don't have a lot of money, so I can't pay ridiculous prices. I also usually use PayPal.

Can anyone help me out? It'd be GREATLY appreciated!  <3

Hey fellow dragonfruit growers! I'm a complete newbie when it comes to this. Have a couple questions!

 My plants (where I got them from) were started as tissue cultures. I read that growing from seed can take years to produce, are tissue cultures the same? Or would it be similar to a small cutting?

Also, what size pot do y'all recommend for small plants? (Under 1 foot tall)

All seeds are in very limited quantities. I have collected fresh;

Cape Gooseberry (physalis peruviana)
Tamarind, sour variety (Tamarindus indica)
Longan (Dimocarpus longan)

And about 10 seeds of;

Prickly Pear Cactus (known as tuna)

All seeds are gathered fresh, cape gooseberry, tuna, and tamarind are dried beforehand, while longan is shipped within moist paper towel.

Prices are below. PAY BY PAYPAL OR GOOGLE WALLET
 (PRICES UPDATED JUNE 30th)
________________
Cape gooseberry is $3 per gram (50+ seeds)
Tamarind is $2 per 10 seeds
Prickly pear is $2 for 5-10 seeds (approximately 2 orders left)
Longan is $5 per 10 seeds (approximately 2 orders remaining.)

Please send me a message or email and I'll get in touch with you!

Unfortunately what you are getting is average in quality and a decent bet was previously frozen and if not, probably not the freshest.  Not trying to be a diwner, just stating facts.  Oriental markets, while it may be your only chance to buy locally, are not usually a good source for jackfruit.   Even here, qhere it is grown, quality from Oriental markets are not great.

Yeah I know. I didn't say that it's the best place to find it, it's the only place to find it here. It probably is better quality elsewhere, but I enjoyed mine. Meh, beggars can't be choosers. The one I just got that's 14 pounds at $11 wasn't bad for the price. At least I didn't have a totally crappy one for my first taste! That probably would've ruined my future chances to want one.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What are your experiences with Jackfruit?
« on: June 02, 2017, 05:57:36 PM »
Hey all! What is your experience with jackfruit? I had my first one about 2 weeks ago.

It was a 9lb half for $9, which made me extremely happy considering I read that someone found them for $3-$4 a pound. I tried to pick a good one, but I'm not very experienced. It was good, though. It was sweet and crunchy, but smelled...rank. Ew.

I'm writing this on the way back from my local Asian market. I was going to try to find a whole one, but they only had halves. The price was even better this time! I got a 14 pound half for $11. I was trying to pick a more optimal one compared to my previous one.

I never understood why people said it smelled/tasted like juicy fruit gum, that is, until now. As I was trying to pick one, I smelled the most peculiar scent. I couldn't tell where it was coming from, so I bent down and sniffed the fruit. Even through the plastic wrap, it wa overwhelmingly strong. It smells so wonderful, sweet and fruity x10. I can't wait to taste it!

I really enjoyed the overall experience of jackfruit. I'd love to hear about everyone else's experiences!

Sorry for my newbie topic. I have grown a lot of things, but never jackfruit.

I harvested seeds from a store bought jackfruit (9lb half for $9) and tried to read up on how to germinate them. I read that you should soak them beforehand, so I placed them in a mixture of warm water and cytokines. That was about 2 days ago. I checked on them today to either change their water or move them to a paper towel.

There were no differences, except a couple were cracking. I have 3 that are cracking in the center, no visible mold or other defects.

Is this germination, or should I toss the seeds? I thought it was signs of germination at first, but a lot of the pictures I've seen have sprouted from the top of the seeds, not the center.

Thanks for any help!

No soaking was necessary however bigger question is where did the fruit come from?  The fruit could have been previously frozen.

When planting jackfruit seeds, you are best starting with seeds from a high quality fruit.   Seeds from a random fruit that us if just average quality will most likely yield a tree that would produce fruit of at best, average quality.

I got the fruit from a local Asian market. I picked out the whole fruit and they split it for me and packaged it.
 I'm honestly not even concerned about getting good fruit, I just love growing a variety of plants. If I get to see it fruit, I'll be thoroughly surprised.

You need not have soaked them in water if they are straight from the fruit. It was enough to plant them in well draining soil.

Ok, thanks for the tip. But do you know why they're cracking?

Hey everyone! My name is Ashley. I'm a member of gw, but I didn't come from there. I remember googling something and this site popped up, so I joined! I am located in central TX, so it's starting to get hot!! We've already had at least 10, 90f+ days. But, with that, I usually grow stuff indoors. The heat and wind is unpredictable, and it's hard to monitor my seedlings. Currently I am growing;

 (not tropical. Listing everything)
Cape gooseberry
Tomato

(Tropical)
Lychee (sprouted 1 seed, have another coming)
Pomegranate (wonderful)
Dragonfruit (Yellow, American Beauty, and Tricia)
Passionfruit (purple)
and Jackfruit!

I look forward to meeting everyone!
