Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Growing Kiwis in South Florida
« on: April 18, 2014, 09:53:20 PM »
I grow fuzzy kiwi in north Florida (zone 8), Vincent and Tomuri varieties. I also have the smooth artic kiwi.  We usually get over 600 chill hours and this winter was real cold, we had low temps of 12 degrees on two mornings. Everything did fine and budded out by mid march.  Hoping for fruit this summer, they've been in the ground about four years now.

My top 5 would have to be:

Mango- nothing beats the perfect mango
Lychees- highly addictive and a close second
Watermelon- end of May Georgia watermelons are perfect
Avocados- hated them growing up, love them now
Blueberries - ripe rabbiteye from my farm in NW Florida

Bushel Stop locations in Broward carry pine bark fines.  I think i paid $6 per 2 cut ft bag.  Also home depot on Atlantic Blvd in Coral Springs sells large bags of perlite and vermiculture.
