Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mammee Apple is disgusting
« on: June 21, 2016, 12:02:14 AM »
I just purchased a Mammee Apple from a well respected fruit nursery grower in Hawaii.   The fruit tastes terrible.  I couldn't eat more than 2 bites and threw away the rest.  It took a lot just to stomach the 2 bites.  Yes initially there is an apricot sort of flavor but then there is an after taste sort of like vomit.  It wasn't over ripe.

What are your opinions?   Was this under ripe.  How is this supposed to taste?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Osmocote for potted Mango
« on: December 12, 2015, 04:40:30 PM »
I'm waiting until after vacation and cold snaps to put my mango in the ground.   I threw some osmocote on the potted plant.   Usually I wouldn't fertilize with synthetic fertilizers when planted in ground, but thought I would put some in the pot.   Tree is about 3.5 feet tall.   Will the osmocote do any damage to the tree.  Just read they don't like too much nitrogen.

Ong Nursery in San Diego has a good selection and is in the City.   Located in a residential area, so amazing the # of plans they have on a small lot.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Feeding mango tree
« on: December 08, 2015, 07:26:12 PM »
For a mango tree, what have you done as far as fertilization.  Any suggestions?  My mango is in a pot right now but will be planted in the ground in about a month.  I plan on heavy mulching.   Current soil is decently fertile as there have been horses around but otherwise we are in the desert so clay so beneath the good soil.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Dragon Fruit thread.

Hi Nullzero,

I got my Purple Haze cutting from you a few years ago.  It's thriving now.  No fruit yet, but it's gotten to the size where it can get fruit now.

A friend of a relative gave us some dragon fruit with white interior.  I almost didn't try it because they have always been insipid.  But this one was actually sweet.  Not super sweet, but good sweet.   He grew it himself, so I guess the white version is better if allowed to ripen.

How does the fruit taste?  What cold and heat extremes can the tolerate.  I love cashews.  Never knew I could grow it.  Does it need pollination from male?  Got any left?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Guava help needed on yellow leaves
« on: March 28, 2014, 12:46:25 AM »
I'll have to get some pictures to post but can't do it for a few days.   Basically, some of the bottom leaves are completely yellow and the top are green on one tree.  On another tree, some of the branches have yellow leaves more towards the part closer to the trunk.   Some of the leaves are brown around the edges.   They sailed through last year and all winter with completely green leaves and almost no leaves dropping.   Only seeing this happening since spring started.

Incidentally, last year with a ton of growth on one tree, I had no guava fruits.  Maybe too much nitrogen last year.

Please help because there is no info to be found searching the internet on this topic.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Guava help needed on yellow leaves
« on: March 25, 2014, 11:49:42 PM »
I have 2 guavas trees. One in pot and one in ground.  They both survived a mild winter with no leaf drop.  Looked great.  Now that it is well into a warm spring, the leaves are turning yellow.  Some are completely yellow.  What can help?  They are uniformly yellow unlike on some of my citrus where it looks chlorotic.  Could it be not enough iron, nitrogen, something else?  If at all possible, I'd like to have some organic solutions, but also like to hear any solutions as well.  Thanks.

I see lots of red prickly pear around some public areas loaded with fruit.  They are quite red.  When's the usual time to pick them?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Rose apple?
« on: July 25, 2013, 01:18:54 AM »
I had some nice sweet ones from a neighbor.  They were small, sweet, red, and hint of rose.  Pear like texture, and refreshing.  I bought some more from china town and they were large, but bland and insipid.

Try to taste the fruit from your seller if possible.  The trees are beautiful too.

Yes I finally tasted a good sweet crunchy jackfruit.  I wish I were close enough to the u-pick farm.  The bad one I tasted before from supermarket was a bit soft, overripe and disgusting. What a difference with a good one.  I'm still not sure how to go about picking a good one.

Wanted: coconut cream mango tree.   Need to be shipped to AZ.

Yes mesquite can grow in CA.  I'm not sure if honey mesquite is different from just regular mesquite.

I didn't see this in time, and don't have room to grow.  But good for you for spreading the seed!

What do you look for in good jackfruit.  I remember buying some from a storebnd didn't like it.  Threw the whole thing away.  Since so many people like it, I must have had a bad one.  Just want to know what a good one is like.

Need to try this.  Can anyone sell or send me some when I'm in Oahu in June.  I'm thinking maybe it's easier inter-island.    If so, let me know

Okay, If I'm going to Oahu, where besides Frankie's fruit nursery, China Town, and the Kapiolani Farmers Market.  What good tropical fruits are in season late June?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Another prickly pear selection

Nullzero:  What's your method for plucking those tunas from plants (not in your yard).   I see lots of them around, and was wondering how to do it rather quickly.  I saw on youtube, someone using a blow torch, but that wouldn't be an option for me.  There is a really grand one on the property of a public library.  I might be arrested if I were to show up with a blow torch.  They would never believe that I just want to harvest some prickly pear.   I thought maybe just using some pruning shears would work quickly.   What's your method.

Just curious why flying in and out of AZ or NV better?
