Tropical Fruit Discussion / Good/safe water?

I put in a well and the irrigation will be up and running tomorrow ( hopefully ) ........ the irrigation guy tested the water and said it is very very low in salt and was kinda shocked because salt is sometimes a problem in my area.

The water is Mirky .... kinda milky looking and has a slight sulfur smell ....... I'm going to take some to the pool company in the morning to get tested

I am assuming salt won't be an issue but what other stuff should I look for or be afraid of before I use it on these newly planted mango's?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango varieties that need more than 17.5x20 spacing

I am second guessing my choice to do 20' row spacing and 17.5' tree spacing in the rows. When I do the next section of the grove I will do 20x25 or 30 I think. I just want things to be a little more airy.

My question is of the list below of trees that I have coming are there any that are brutes and I should not plant in the 17.5'x20 section because I won't be able to keep them contained or will inhibit the tree by trying to do so?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dragon fruit support structure/safety question

Is is ok ( safe ) to built dragon fruit trellis's using treated marine dock posts? I.e. Can or do any of the chemicals used to treat the pilons get into the fruit through the roots attached to the pole?

I know it is treated way more heavily than regular treated lumber ......

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Planting a small grove ..... Keitt , Lemon zest and a few other questions plz

Mango guru's I need your advice please ....... I am planting a small grove ( hobby farmish but would like to sell the fruit someday from a stand ).

I made the rounds last week and picked out about 50 trees to be delivered in a couple weeks after the fear of a late freeze is gone

Some of my choices were made on the spot based on availability or lack there of and some by the people at the nurseries that were helping me and answering my questions.

I got about 20 varieties FYI but my first two questions are .......

I read in another post today that Lemon zest is very disease prone ....... I did tag 4 of these as the person helping me said that the fruit sells very well. Should I rethink buying the 4 trees and maybe only buy 1 or 2?

My second question is about keitt ...... everything I see and read makes this tree sound like a very good meat and potatoes producer ......... I read they are disease prone when young but that they are bullet proof and supply well in late season. I had planned on getting 5 of them but both nurseries said that they would not recommend them at all and kinda talked me out of them?

When I'm done setting up the farm I will have about 100 trees maybe more if I plant the whole property ....... should Keitt be included for what I'm trying to do?

Citrus General Discussion / Green house / hoop house

Can anyone point me in the right direction or put me in contact with someone that is growing dooryard citrus in Florida to protect from greening?

I am planting a new grove of mango and lychee and have decided to not plant the 50 citrus trees that I had planned on ...... I just think it will be to discouraging.

I really would like to have 10 or 12 trees just for juice and have heard that it can be done in a way to prevent the disease

I just bought a small piece of property and am planning out the things that will grow there ...... I need a cold hardy variety as it will get below 32 degrees for a day or 2 every other winter ...... I have a brogdon at my house already, a fl hass at my office so I am looking for best tasting cold hardy ....... And maybe a different harvest season than what I have? Day? Lula? Hall?

I wanted to share with you all that I have been growing a florida hass for I think 4 years now planted as a 7 or 15 gallon ...... I can't remember. Ist year nada 2nd year nada 3rd year got some fruit but they didn't ripen properly and I was bummed. I almost got mad at it a couple of months ago and cut it down but it had about 30 fruit on it so I decided to hold off. I was told to pick them in August but they just didn't look ready so I waited until this Saturday and picked a bunch of them and put them on the kitchen counter. One of the was ready today and I cut it open and was rewarded with a perfect colored and textured hass ...... Added a little drizzle of lime and a dusting of Tony Sacheries Cajun seasoning and gave it a try. It was not very different than a California ....... It had excellent hass like oil and taste and although I like florida avocados I definitely like the hass more which is why I planted this tree in the first place. I am very glad I gave this tree a third chance and now it could be one of my favorites!

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / sapodilla...you gots any?

i am down to very limited realestate so i am deciding what i want to put in the few remaining spots left that i have. i really like reading the posts about sapodilla and am considering the makok or alano. leaning towards the makok because it apparently stays small. one thing i have learned is that taste is to each his own. i have never eaten a sapodilla and would not want to waste my time growing one if i did not like it. soooooooooo do any of you have a perfect one that you would like to show of and send to me or can anyone tell me how to get one without driving 5 hours south from merritt island....and yes i would gladly pay for shipping if someone was willing to help me get my hands on one. thanks

I have some really nice stuff growing and i guess since it is so common i just took it for granted. I dont have a loquat!! my question is about "big jim" . it appears to be offered by california nurseries and i am attracted to it because it supposedly produces giant fruit. does anyone grow it in florida, is it good and do any of you know where i can get one in florida? i just planted a little "oliver" but would like to buy a bigger already producing tree.

turning all my trees leafs into zippers! i squish about 10 every time i look for them. i did some reading and so far cant find any info on killin them. does anyone have an answer to this problem.........
