My impression is that SoCal isn't doing too bad. Many water districts (mine included) quietly raised the restrictions in the middle of last summer after arguing to the state that we have water to last 2 years. See that last link. Also lots of groundwater down here. We don't have enough saved up for the next drought nor enough built reservoirs, but for the moment...

My understanding is that you should have to call digalert (811) to get the lines marked (for mechanical excavations), but then if you're digging over those lines you have to do it by hand. And since you're probably doing that anyway...proceed carefully. In Carlsbad I've planted plenty over marked lines. Nothing precious of course.

Very cool! I was half expecting to see Glycosmis pentaphylla, but I guess that's only a cousin.

Gopher spurge? Castor been seeds?

Three Marula related questions:

1. Is this a marula seedling? (I recently germinated a mango seed in an old cup of seed starting mix and this popped up alongside it. The cup was labeled marula, and I seem to recall getting some marula seeds from Nullzero at last year's Green Scene.)

2. Has anyone here actually tasted marula, and feel they can recommend this fruit?

3. It's anyone willing to exchange (or sell) scions sometime down the road? I've only got the one plant, and I know that marulas are dioecious. I'd rather graft than grow out more seedlings.

Thanks

I'll exchange when the time comes. I have 3 in the ground and know someone else with several more.

I'm thinking of grafting an incarnata onto Frederick, butterfly magnet w/o the root runners.

It can take anywhere from several years to 20+ years for a seedling to fruit but I'm guessing it will probably be closer to 5-10 years if you water and fertilize properly. Our cold weather can induce blooms on very young trees.

Simon

So it's best to get them going then graft them?   Is it possible to find any of the recommended varieties already grafted anywhere other than ONG in SD county?

Exotica actually has a big selection right now, but they're approaching Ong's prices. Still they are mostly on CA appropriate rootstocks.

90
Fun! Welcome to the forum. I have my plant list in my profile. Exotica is a good place to try out fruit, as are the asian and indian grocery stores. And fellow forum members yards :)

91
Do you know what the rootstock is?

92
Are anyone growing these in SoCal or any location that gets below 40 farenheit?

I've had one in ground for at least one winter maybe two. Got it at a HD. Doing ok. Touches 32deg about 5 times every winter. Hasn't dropped below the last couple years though.

I have a lychee and a longan in pots. The longan I got a few years ago from Simon and it never did much. Leaves were slightly yellow and a bit of tip burn. Gave it to a friend, who gave it to a friend who then returned it to me looking pretty much as it did with Simon gave it to me. The lychee was a more recent purchase, but looked and acted the same. I moved both to my nursery area, which gets basically the same sun and water as they had before but because it is largely enclosed, it stays more humid and is not exposed to wind at all. Both plants flushed beautifully and now have a nice full canopy of dark green healthy leaves with no tip burn. The move was meant to be temporary, but I think I'll just leave them there. Take home is that humidity seems to make a huge difference for this family.

Thanks JF! White Sapote are delicious and I have a lot at the moment I'd like for people to plant out.

Raimeiken,
The favorites I have tasted are Santa Cruz and Cuccio, Walton is highly rated and I know I've tried it but it was mixed with other unlabeled varieties. I have a lot of fruit holding from the other varieties listed that I'm looking forward to trying.

Thank you Bob Chambers ! Rest well.

now you tell me!  ;)
