Thanks for all the help guys. So optimally wish I had a bigger yard but my back yard is out of space and wife wasn't letting me touch the front yard until now lol. So I planted the Jabo which I have had for about 3 years now in a pot (got it from you Jeff). I ended up planting it where I was asking about 4ft from the house north facing between two windows smack center of the house. I plan it on being an ornamental mainly (what I told wife)and of course hoping for some fruit. This area does get some sun throughout the summer but not much now as the sun sits further to the south this time of year. And I am also planning on keeping it nicely pruned they are truly beautiful trees. I will try to get a picture up tomorrow.

How invasive are the roots of a Jabo. I am planing on planting one close to my house in between two windows and about 4 feet from my wall will this be ok? I'm trying to redo my landscape and Jaboticabas are so ornamental I want to include it in my plans. Thanks!

They look great! How's it taste Jack?

Here is a picture of my achachairu In the ground now for a year in full sun purchased from Montoso gardens three years ago as a 12 inch seedling. It is taller than my six foot hedge Surinam cherry hedge. I can't wait until it's fruiting like this one. I also can't wait until the my  Mex. Garcinias I got from you are fruiting but they are the size of my Achacha when I first got it from montoso gardens so I will have to be patient. Thanks for sharing.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Taiwan Purple Vs Noel's Big Red Late
« on: August 25, 2014, 10:44:58 PM »
So thanks to Coconut I had the pleasure of trying side by side a Taiwan Purple and a Late Noel F2 Big Red sugar apple. Both fruits were beautiful on the outside and I had some doubts whether they may even be the same fruit. Both fruits were about the same size just under 1lb and had a slight give to them. When I cut them up as you can see from the pictures the Taiwan purple held up more than the Late Noel which seemed to just fall apart into gelatinous  like pieces. The Taiwan purples flesh was firmer and lighter in color however the taste to me was rather bland and not very sweet. I had doubts as to whether I cut into it a little to early. I had another Taiwan purple the next day which I let ripen even more and the results were similar a little sweeter than previous one with firmer texture than the Late Noel but still somewhat bland and not too sweet. The Late Noel's flesh reminded me of what I was used to a sugar apple being like with a sweet gelatinous mushy flavor and texture which was always awesome to me until I tried the Boca chewy. It had a good sweet flavor and I noticed me preferring it over the Taiwan Purple in this tasting. One interesting observation was on the seed count, the Taiwan Purple 42 and Late Noel 70.  Overall and looking at the bigger picture, in all my recent sugar apple sampling I have been doing lately I would highly rate the Burmese Red over both of these fruits and I think it is in a class of its own. I'm curious to hear Sleepdoc's opinion once he gets to try the Burmese Red and Boca Chewy he got ahold of.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Neelam Reports new update
« on: August 25, 2014, 05:33:30 PM »
At this point most of the folks that provided input in this specific topic and that were still waiting to try the fruit of their Neelam trees should have had the opportunity to taste them. After all this post was started in 2012 and many had just put down a tree in the ground.

So, on top of Seadation who else enjoys the taste of  Neelam? Some lamented a carrot like, or an off taste. Did that improve over time as the tree has become mature and you more comfortable with pick timing and ripening technique?

Picking a few Neelam green and hard and wrapping in newspaper. Then put in a box for a 3-4-5 days.  Is working out better for me.... so far. They taste much better.
You are supposed to do this with Malika? Both are Indian mangoes

I agree this year I was getting inconsistency from my neelams. The fruit was ripening uneven and the taste was not too good until I tried pulling a couple of mature green fruit placed them in a paper bag in my garage. Left on vacation for 5 days when I returned looked in the bag and saw gold. They had fully and evenly ripened into an intense even golden color with a sweet awesome taste. So I went out and took 39 off the tree and did the same with same results. Try it this way it worked great for me. Mine is done for the year.

Do you have them in full sun? At that size they seem to do much better in partial to mostly shade.

Here it is Jack the Boca Chewy F2 B Royal Palm. Slightly pink on the outside couldn't wait to see if flesh was also pink. As you can see from the picture it has a slight pink colored flesh on the core and the edges but still mostly white in color. It is getting there and soon enough it will be pick. As far as the flavor goes was exceptional just like the others. Had this fruit in the fridge and got home from dinner and couldn't wait til tomorrow just had to eat it. I could eat these things all day. You should have seen the look on sleepdocs face as he was trying the other one you gave me yesterday. The Taiwan reds and late Noel red are almost ready will follow up with review by end of weekend.

Sleepdoc and I got so into the flavor, texture, color, and taste of the Boca orange snob we forgot to take pictures. It was definitely the best jackfruit I have ever had. We dug into it bare handed no oil and at the end I remember talking about how my hands were a little sticky but clearly any other jack and our hands would have been a total mess. Clearly minimal to zero latex on this fruit totally unbelievable. So when I left home I didn't even wash my hands and drove down 30 min to Miami. When I got home my hands were as soft as a baby's but no latex to be found on my hands or the steering wheel of my car. The carpels are large firm and very thick and meaty with a great flavor. Went straight up to the top of my must have trees period.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Phet Pakchong Tasting
« on: August 20, 2014, 10:16:55 PM »
So Coconut was again generous enough to give me some of his fruit to sample. I received a huge 2lb 1 ounce Phet Pakchong a Boca Chewy sugar apple, two Taiwan purple sugar apples, and a late Noel F2 big Red sugar apple to sample for his breeding program. Coconut has to be one of the most generous people I know when it comes to sharing fruit and am glad he has chosen me to be one of his guinea pigs (fruit tasters) for his breeding program. In this post I will be reviewing the Phet Pakchong and comparing it to the Boca chewy which was already reviewed in another thread. The other fruits are not ready yet and will be reviewed soon.

Phet Pakchong is an Atemoya that I have heard a lot of great things about and is considered to be one of the best atemoyas around. It definitely did not disappoint in the looks department. What a stunning and beautiful fruit. It weighed in at a whopping 33 ounces by far the largest atemoya/sugar apple/cherimoya I have held. The flavor was mild almost bland semi sweet atemoya with hints of vanilla. The flesh was as smooth as silk with a firm texture similar to that of a cherimoya however flavor wise it was definitely missing the kick in sweetness and complexity that I get from the Boca Chewy.

I don't know if I am becoming an annona snob with all these amazing fruits I have been sampling lately but the Phet Pakchong which would have been at the top of my list two months ago did not compare too the intense sweetness and taste of the Boca Chewy. Not taking anything away from the Pp which I think is great and a must have in every collection and one that I will definitely be getting myself but if I had to choose between the two hands down it would be an easy decision for me the Boca Chewy all the way. The seed count from both fruits was 42 for the Pp and 62 from the Boca Chewy which was half the size of the Pp. So even though the Pp had fewer seeds and was twice the size of the Boca Chewy I still was quick to gravitate to the Boca chewy during my tasting. Coconut has something special with the Boca chewy that I hope you guys will soon get to taste.

Just tried it is was awesome just like the last time I tried it. It is low latex and crunchy with a mild slight lemony taste to it. Jack I'll take you a piece tomorrow.

That looks huge. Can't wait to see pics of it open. I'm guessing 51 lbs

So I have tried several different varieties of jackfruit over the years from various seedlings to Sleepdoc's Bangkok lemon and Harry's BG X T jack. This particular jack had very little latex compared to what I have seen.  I won't say it was latex free but it was a breeze to clean with only a minimal amount of oil on my knife. I cleaned my portion of the fruit (half) in about 10 minutes with the carpels tearing away very easily from the jack and I did it all on my kitchen counter which is a first for me. I always clean them in the back yard. The yellow flesh was firm and crunchy with a sweet refreshing taste very similar tasting of Bangkok Lemon from what I can remember. The fruit had lots of juice which was something I had only noticed once before while cleaning a jack. The juice was like drinking liquid juicy fruit. This particular variety ranks up there with the best jacks I have had in the past. I can't wait to try the Boca Orange Snob Hard to imagine it being much better than this one and if it is I'm definitely getting the chainsaw out and making room for it.

On a side note Coconut gave me some fresh palm heart today to try.  My only experience eating palm hearts was years ago from a can and I really didn't care for it.  This was a different experience it tasted like coconut meat to me similar in sweetness taste and texture. Now I just need to find some recipes to experiment with it.  If anyone has some suggestions please let me know.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Burmese Red Sugar Apple
« on: August 10, 2014, 10:06:27 PM »
This past Friday I was lucky and fortunate to get my hands on this beauty from Coconut to sample.  This is Coconut's Burmese Red sugar apple. As you can see it has an intense red color and large size. This 1lb fruit had a total of 51 seeds. The flesh had a sweet creamy melt in your mouth custard like texture. Zero grit smooth as silk and a slight berry taste to it no aftertaste.  I would almost describe the taste similar to a berry flavored sugar apple yogurt. Definitely another amazing must have in anyone's fruit collection. The tree is growing in the shade and set lots of beautiful fruits without hand pollination. Too bad Coconut has lost most of them to the squirrels. There was one that he lost that was almost twice this ones size. Enjoy the pics.

Very nice FGM it would be great to compare these to Coconuts amazing creations. Just like Harry has his mango tastings maybe in the future we can have an Annona tasting that would be cool.

So thanks to Coconut I had the pleasure of trying Boca Chewy F2 C. The fruit which was consumed in it's entirety a couple of hours ago was just a bit smaller than F2 A. I did not weigh it but I would say it was just under a pound and was a little too much on the soft side of ripeness. Coconut told me it was overripe but to try it anyways. Off the bat when I opened the fruit I noticed the flesh softer and more translucent than the previous two subjects and a pleasant aroma came about. When I tried the flesh I was hit by a super sweet, juicy, soft but not falling apart or crumbly texture it was more of a creamy, thick consistency to it with amazing intense taste. First thing that came to mind was the abundance of seeds this particular fruit had. Every section of flesh was surrounded by a seed, 91 of them to be exact. Taste wise I Would rank the F2 C every bit up there with  F2A and F2B only major difference I observed was the number of sees with C having almost 3 times the number of seeds as A and B. So not only was A and B a bigger fruit they practically had barely any seeds compared to the c fruit and that is amazing if consistent. Another interesting observation I made was that even though the F2C fruit was partially overripe and a little past it's prime it still was an amazing top tier fruit. Here are some pictures. Thank you Jack for allowing me to be of assistance in your selection process. Enjoy!

Yes the squirrels are a big problem in my house but so far only with the coconut cream and Neelam mangos. Here is a follow up of the second fruit which was larger in size than the first. As you can see from the pictures the fruit weighed slightly over a pound. Flavor wise compared to the smaller fruit this one was just as good as the other one truly an exceptional creamy juicy consistency to the flesh. The one thing that I did notice, was that this fruit Boca Chewy F2 had a total of 31 seeds. So not only was this one larger it also had fewer seeds than the previous fruit. Keep in mind Coconut picked these fruit off his tree early due to the massive squirrel problem he is having so who's to say how much more each would have grown if left on the tree any longer. In conclusion both of these Boca Chewy F2 A and B are definitely winner varieties. Coconuts trees are loaded with fruit so they are precocious fast growing trees that are only 3 years old. Enjoy the pictures.

Ok so I just ate the smaller of the two Boca Chewy labeled by Coconut as F2. A.  I basically pulled the fruit apart into two huge pieces and as you can see I thought to myself if this tastes as good as it looks I'm in heaven. The fruit looked like white snow insde or as a previous poster mentioned like white marshmallow. The flesh had a firm juicy consistency that melted in my mouth with the best sugar apple taste I have ever had. Im used to the smaller sugar apples full of sees and very little soft flesh, this was like eating mouthfuls of flesh with very little seeds. Compared to my Gefner with a similar texture and consistency in the flesh this is far superior to my taste buds. The whole fruit had only 35 seeds which will be retuned to coconut for his further breeding projects.
I will review and compare the larger one Boca Chewy F2 B to this one soon it should be ready in a day or two. I will also have more pictures of the fruit and try to get a weight on it.
