Tropical Fruit Discussion / Die Die fungus Mango Regimen
« on: January 21, 2018, 06:34:48 PM »

Hey Forum,

Seen a few posts on here about spraying mangos and trying to make heads or tales out of it, so posting this as to maybe elicit feedback from the pros and help the new to sprayers like myself. This is my first time ever spraying for fungus in my yard and with 7 small-ish mangos I’m using a cheep 1 gal sprayer from Home Depot. Bought Bonide liquid copper 16oz and Sulfur powder 1lb from amazon, placed 1/4 cup of sulfur (powder first) then 1/4 cup liquid copper into sprayer then filled with warm tap water. Went to town on my trees right before the sun went down. I read somewhere that best time to spray is before sun goes down as possibly too much early sun would be rough on the trees. Plan to do this around every 1.5 weeks, my Maha just started flowering and others are starting to push... flowers I hope!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What’s bloomin?

Seriously weird year so far, not a single one of my mangos: coco cream, lemon zest, seedling ivory, ice cream, Maha chanok, NDM, sweet tart have bloomed yet but my sweet heart lychee has, nuts right?!?

Hey Forum,

Anyone in FL actually growing and fruiting this? See there are a few places to purchase this but have never seen any growers talking about or pics of locally grown fruit. I’m almost considering growing just as the leaves are super unique and pretty to me as another tree in my yard.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Tree specific hardiness, post hurricane Irma.
« on: September 11, 2017, 09:49:16 AM »
Hey Forum,

Hope everyone affected is ok with minimal damage. Wanted to start this thread and so we can compile enough reports to get an overall idea of how well certain tropical fruit trees hold up against hurricanes. Please be specific on what measures you took to protect your trees and post pictures with how they fared. After surveying my yard it seems certain trees were harmed more due to their location on my lawn but also based on the type type of tree.

Pervuvian apple cactus: pushed over and will need to be straightened and staked, also in same pic oro negro 🥑 just chilling and not affected, maybe partially due to near house privacy wall and also zip tied to an electrical conduit pipe hammered into ground about 3 ft for support. Lisa atemoya: battered badly, was zip tied to electrical conduit stake and zip tie broke. Seedling ivory mango: no precautions were taken too the storm like a champ, leggy branches are bent but not broken. Naha chanok: no precautions and tree is bent over and will need to be stakeked.  Seedling sugar Apple: beaten to a pulp, no precautions were taken, hope this guy survives.  Coco cream: gave it a heavy pruning, some branches are broken but overall it fared way better this year vs Irma than it did last year vs Matthew. Cereus bar monstrose: limb was broken off, also not pictured multiple limbs of various dragon fruits blown off. Sweet heart lychee: this tree was most exposed and took the storm like an absolute champ, no precautions were taken. Not pictured are my citrus (tangelo, grapefruit, lemon) all handled the storm well.

In summary for me at least I would rank lychee, citrus, avocado, mango, cactus, Anona in terms of hurricane resistance.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Coco cream Hurricane Haircut
« on: September 08, 2017, 09:28:42 PM »
Last year during Matthew my coconut cream was badly ripped up, so I cut it down to a ft length on either side of the fork. Something about its long vigorous spindly growth habit that it caught the wind really good vs other mango trees in my yard. After the cut it literally looked like a stick. It has grown back quick this year and going into Irma I decided to level off the higher branches and then thin out the remaining canopy. Maybe it will fare better this year.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pineapple Pleasure Pics
« on: September 03, 2017, 11:55:37 PM »
Hey Forum,

Was wondering if someone with a pineapple pleasure tree could post a few close up pics of what the leaves look like and also the whole tree to get an idea of the growth habit. I saw a few pics previously on the forum but they seemed blurry and since then maybe more members have trees now. TIA

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Processing excess mango method
« on: July 25, 2017, 10:07:21 PM »

Neighbor down the road has a very large mango tree planted almost 30yrs ago. The mangos are small, roundish, fibrous, ripens yellow with a strong peachy tang and resin flavor, mono seed. Went over and picked a bunch and gave rest to my neighbor. Since it's fibrous and not super fun to eat out of hand I cut the mangos halves off the seed and scooped out flesh with a spoon placed on wax paper on a cookiie sheet and froze. Think this will make for good smoothies down the road.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Deep dive in mango tree nutrition needs.
« on: July 21, 2017, 09:27:28 PM »
Hey forum,

Found this presentation and thought it was really interesting to pass along, maybe way more than any of us backyard growers need, but interesting part on calcium. Never really thought about calcium and it turns out there is a huge role. Another point to consider is Richard campbells orchard and how he is digging through bedrock of limestone and coral.... i.e. a goldmine of calcium carbonate CaCO3 mango nutrients. Check it out -> https://www.slideshare.net/mobile/AustralianMangoes/food-for-fruit-nutrition-management-in-mangoes

Anyone growing this mango? Don't see any pics on the forum and no taste reviews, and remember back Excalibur was going to start propagating it like 2 years ago and now circling back.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / LSU purple fig air layer
« on: July 14, 2017, 07:34:22 PM »
Started this air layer about 3 weeks ago using a soda bottle, roots coming along nicely. LSU purple has bad reviews from what Ive read online which is perplexing because mine are delish. I also have LSU gold and the gold taste somewhat washed out and lacking in sugar/fig honey flavor.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Some pics from recent vacation
« on: May 27, 2017, 06:45:53 PM »

Some pics from recent vacation to Positano, Santorini, and Athens. 1st, dragon fruit growing up a wall in Positano , the owner had screwed wiring to the wall as a trellis that the DF could cling to. Positano the most beautiful city I have ever been, the Italians have everything trellised, grapes, lemons, bougainvillea ect just incredible, the whole city. 2nd, trellised lemon trees. 3rd n 4th giant lemon cultivar in Positano, took these for scale, actually bought one at the market and it was a joke, cut it open and to my dismay was mostly white pith with a tiny dry lemon flesh inside lacking juice. Only cut one giant lemon open but am guessing these are grown more for show or using rind for lemoncello. 5th- bougainvillea and view of bay in Positano. 6- brunch our wives put together, local apricots, cantaloupe (outrageously delish) cherries, sausage ect in Positano. 7, 8 - figs, lots of figs everywhere in santorini. 9, a pomegranate tree in santorini. 10, an apricot tree at the acropolis in Athens.

Trip was awesome, had a great time soaking up the culture and fruit spotting.

Ciao,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Sweet tart growth habit
« on: December 20, 2016, 10:28:24 PM »
Hey forum,

I'm curious about the personality of sweet tart, compact grower, tall lanky, wide spindly, etc can people please elaborate with pics and experience? I may have room for one more mango but I would probably have to squeeze it or swap spots with another.

Thanks,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Figs in Fl
« on: May 16, 2016, 06:44:59 PM »
I absolutely love figs, but seems not too many people grow them in Fl. My mother has a huge scraggly looking brown turkey, from homedepot growing in her back yard which always has only a few fig rusted leaves on it, and has only produced one nearly edible fruit that was dried out in the few years it has been growing in her backyard.

I think the reason for the terrible fig production lies in the control of heat and water, and also in the nutrient deprived sandy soil (also in fact that brown turkey is a meh fig and for some reason most readily available to purchase). So in the fall of last year I ordered an LSU Gold/Puprle from stark bro's and a panache from grow organic, all 3 were shipped in 4ft rooted cuttings. My goal was to try and grow them in pots on my patio so I could have more control over the heat/water/soil factors and just see what happens.

Currently the three figs are growing in large pots on wheels, which I move them some days out in full sun and some days completely out of direct sun under the roof. I also water them each with a gallon of water daily. This keeps the leaves from wilting, and the figs from falling off/drying out. All three are producing breba crops right now, and I picked my first lsu gold today which had a nice honeydew melon flavor to it. Pretty stoked and hopeful that the late summer crops will be better.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / On Ross Sapote Pollination
« on: March 02, 2016, 08:34:02 AM »
So I bought this Ross from Patrick few years ago and for past 3 years it flowers and gives no fruit what gives?!?! Do I need two trees to cross pollinate, are there male or female flowers, or is the tree too juvenile yet? ....or am I just unlucky? Here are some pics of the tree, drops its leaves and then pushes new leaves with flowers, debating on ripping it out if no fruit this year...

Citrus General Discussion / Star Ruby Grapefruit
« on: January 05, 2016, 11:45:18 AM »
Ripped out my tropic snow peach, disappointed for some reason failed to thrive.... But planted a star ruby grapefruit in its place. See not too much on forum regarding this grapefruit, but I'm excited to grow this based on what I have read. Wanted a grapefruit and it was a random find at Home Depot. From my readings it's the reddish flesh, low seed count range 0-6/ fruit, smaller sweet fruit, and harder to grow. Anyone else care to share their experience growing star ruby?

Picked my first crop of tangelos, not sure which type of tangelo, but the tree is from Home Depot. There were 21 tangelos on this tree and I had to stake the branches to support the weight of the fruit. The tangelos out of hand were very seedy, the rind was easy to separate, and flavor was just ok. I resolved to juice them using an omega juicer and the juice came out amazing, nothing like fresh citrus juice in the morning!

Hey Forum,

Realize the annonas drop their leaves in winter, when is the best time to plant a new tree, in particular Lisa Atemoya?

Thanks,
