Recently I attended mango madness and while there I had a chance to sample many mangos in particular hindi besennara. I found this mango to be very delicious with a unique flavor. I brought the seed home and since it is polyembrionic I am sprouting it to see what happens years from now. While trying to find more information on this mango I came across this study on Egyptian mangos. This is a pretty detailed PDF for anyone looking for more info on Egyptian cultivars and the descriptions of hindi besennara are spot on. I would also like to add.....not a fan of the mesk mango at all. http://www.manarasoft.com/pdf/P42.pdf

Anyone else care to comment on Egyptian cultivars? Who is growing which?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Just got home from mango mania!
« on: June 22, 2013, 07:11:01 PM »
Sheesh I am beat, I drove 5 hours round trip today to attend mango mania at the fruit and spice park. It was my first time at the park and I was really impressed (wish they had something up here in Martin county like it). First we went into a room for a two hour presentation by chris rollins which was about the history of mangos in fl and general care for diseases, watering, and fertilizing. I learned a few things and found it very interesting. Next we had a 45 minute lunch break where I took it upon myself to get lost in the park, but literally I did get lost I had to pull out my iphone and use google maps to map out a path back to the gift shop via walking. Next time I'm bring the park map lol. That set me back a few minutes where I ended up late back to the seminar where Chris was teaching us how to graft mangos, definitely interesting. After that a nearby neighbor of the park treated us to authentic Thai sticky rice with diced kent mango DELISH! Then we went and sampled the mangos which there were probably 40+ different mangos. At this point it was confusing because the volunteers were cutting up delicious mangos in every direction simultaneously and since there was no line with 40 people in a confined area it was hard to keep track and not feel like you were missing something.

The last time I was down this deep in Fl for a fruit event was the mango festival at Fairchild gardens. Now if one could only attend one event be it mango festival or mango mania, let me say mango mania. Basically you get to sample way more mangos, with way less people, and see the fruit and spice park, and its not as hot because its earlier than the mango festival, this is my opinion.

Ultimately I am very happy I went, and now I need to figure out how to acquire Joellen, Hindi bensara, and 9816. The pics do not do justice to how beautiful the colors of Joellen (pink/orange) and 9816 (Bright deep orange) were, their taste was amazing too. Hindi bensara was probably one of the ugliest mangos I have ever seen but the taste was really good and unique, Chris was also really fond of it. Sia tong was pretty good too.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Ants, Good or Bad?
« on: June 01, 2013, 12:20:26 AM »
Dear Forum,

All the sudden as of spring every potted plant I own has a colony of ants living under it. Most are red fire ants the rest are bull ants and "sugar ants." I really cannot stand the ants because I don't want them coming in my house or getting bitten by fire ants, and most of all I don't want them harming my fruit trees, the problem is I dislike pesticide and don't want to spray ant killer on my trees.

Can these ants harm fruit trees?
Any ways to kill them organically?

Thanks

In about a week ill be enjoying my honeymoon at playa del Carmen Mexico. What is in season there during this time? I know I'll mainly be where the resorts are, but can go out of my way to find the local fruit stands.

Sincerely,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Concerning Sugar Apple Hand Pollination
« on: April 15, 2012, 10:29:37 PM »
I have noticed recently that my sugar apple is flushing leaves and awakening from its winter dormancy. Along with those leaves are some small flowers. Last year I had many flowers but none were pollinated and I had no fruit set. Upon further research I found that there are two different stages of flowers and that they require certain pollinators (which my yard must be lacking) and that these are factors to low fruit yield in sugar apples....then I read that a tedious approach to hand pollination can circumvent these issues.

Does anyone currently hand pollinate their annonas? If so could you please share a working method for future use by myself and other forum members? In particular materials used in the process, pollen storage, and identifying the two different flower types.

Any direction is much appreciated.

Hey Forum,

I just returned home from my recent visit to Excalibur, my mission was simple inquire about the availability of Excalibur Red jakfruit and Ross Sapote.

Excalibur Red: is available in 3 gallon they have 15-20 trees at 100$ a pop. I had to pass on the 100$ price point and for now stick with my Mai 3 and BANGKOK lemon and wait to sample the Excalibur Red before buying.

Ross Sapote: Richards wife denied the existence of Ross sapote and suggested it was maybe a renamed Canistel like the Tebow Young mango.....well it is what it is. Does anyone know where to find a Ross sapote trees for sale near boynton beach fl?

I also tried a few "white mulberries" though the pot they were growing in was labeled green. In fact they were partly green and white and very sweet with no tart tasted exactly like the sugar cane I grow. Gonna get me that mullberry in a 3 gallon next.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pugging Maha Chanok then grafting.
« on: March 25, 2012, 09:01:19 PM »
I have a Maha Chanok growing in a five gallon bucket and the thing has grown straight up like a bean stalk approaching 5 feet tall. It was planted a bit high in the 5 gallon and today the wind blew it somewhat over... I was going to wait till the summer to try this (my first graft) but I feel the wind was trying to tell me something today.

I pugged the maha in half and took the scion and splice grafted in onto a seedling store bought mango in three gallon bucket using black electrical tape, razor blade and plastic bag....very low buget l

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Insane Potted Jakarta Mango Flush
« on: March 25, 2012, 08:50:17 PM »
Yo I have this Jakarta in a five gallon bucket and I honestly have never seen a flush like this before. Does this look like blooms or vegetative leaf growth? Only time will tell...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lychee Seedling Experience
« on: March 21, 2012, 01:51:58 PM »
Hey

Just curious if anyone has fruited lychee from seed, if so what cultivar was it, how old was the tree when it set fruit, how was the fruit quality, and how did the tree's growth habit differ from an air layer....inquiring minds what to know! I have a seedling lychee growing in a five gallon container and I think it is around 4-5 years old emperor seedling. It grows pretty slow and upright but then again it's in a five gallon bucket, growing it just for fun I guess...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cereus peruvianus var. Monstrose
« on: March 07, 2012, 05:12:25 PM »
Today I noticed my friend's neighbor was growing C. peruvianus var. Monstrose. Since I keep a pair of clippers in the trunk, I asked the owner for a cutting and she kindly obliged. I'm going to let the cutting sit out in the sun for a bit so the wound will scab over and then plant it. I have always wanted one of these and no clue where to buy one, stoked! Here is a link with a monstrose with fruit: http://cactiguide.com/cactus/?genus=Cereus&species=peruvianus

Anyone know where I can get Sternocereus Gummosa?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mini Mango Seed
« on: February 27, 2012, 10:29:47 PM »
I bought a mango from the local grocery store and as always I just had to open up the seed. Upon opening I found a undeveloped or miniature seed. I have seen this before and usually just throw them away but this time I decided to germinate the seed. I am wondering if maybe from this stunted seed that maybe it will sprout a stunted tree which would be good to graft onto. Below you can see just how small the seed was when in comparison to the PLU# sticker!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Whats bloomin at the P450 compound
« on: February 27, 2012, 10:21:26 PM »
Planted this grumichama from Excalibur last year without ever trying the cherries and this year it is flowering, oddly enough the flowers smell like bacon. I don't mind cause I love bacon but no telling what a bacon flavored cherry will taste like...anyone care to comment on the taste?

White marsh grapefruit from HD is in full bloom. I love the smell of citrus blossoms and the white marsh grapefruit has less of the sour bitter taste that you get with the ruby red. You really don't even need to add sugar to the white marsh a true treat for breakfast!

Here is a natchez blackberry from HD

Dwarf Black Thai Mulberry from excalibur, enjoy the berries but so far pretty small.

Pineapple, I got a bunch of free tops from the produce manager at my local Winn-Dixie.

Raspberry from HD forget the cultivar.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Concerning Jackfruit
« on: February 14, 2012, 12:02:38 AM »
I know, I know this is totally sad/lame but two days ago in line at target I actually bought a pack of juicy fruit bubble gum to see if I could get somewhat of a jackfruit taste... Does anyone have any jackfruit left on their trees and would be willing to share some?

Also, I saw on excalibur's website: http://excaliburfruittrees.com/fruits.html , under jackfruit variety's; two new cultivar's that are coming soon "excalibur gold" and "excalibur red" anyone know any gossip on these?!?!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Carambola and Renal Issues.....your thoughts
« on: February 10, 2012, 01:55:40 AM »
Its interesting to read that there are reports of "star-fruit" toxicity, mostly in pt's with already decreased renal function, but at the same time what is the limit on ingestion in pt's with normal renal function? This question alone bugs me. How much is too much? http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19360394

I usually enjoy a star fruit at a time, but I'm sure if I had a profusely fruiting tree I would be encouraged to juice much of my fruit and therefore drink a lot, but could it be harmful?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Preferred method to graft avocado.
« on: February 05, 2012, 11:29:48 PM »
I have a three foot avocado seedling which I grew from a store bought avocado almost a year ago and I was wondering if I was to graft this with a scion from a neighbors tree what would be the prefered method of grafting and also what time of year. If I recall I think I've heard during the winter is good for grafting avocado?

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Why on earth......Marang vs Jakfruit
« on: January 29, 2012, 03:46:50 PM »
Everytime I read up on marang I read about people comparing them to the taste of jakfruit and how it tastes better, but yet I never hear of anyone growing them or critiquing any tastings. I love jakfruit and would love to try some marang. Is anyone out there growing and fruiting marang in FL and what is your option on taste?
